Gim (Porphyra sp.) and miyeok (Undaria pinnatifida) are the seaweeds most consumed by Koreans. We investigated the association between the intake of gim and miyeok and the risk of breast cancer in a case–control study. Cases were 362 women aged 30–65 years old, who were histologically confirmed to have breast cancer. Controls visiting the same hospital were matched to cases according to their age (sd 2 years) and menopausal status. Food intake was estimated by the quantitative FFQ with 121 items, including gim and miyeok. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to obtain the OR and corresponding 95 % CI. The average intake and consumption frequency of gim in cases were lower than in controls. The daily intake of gim was inversely associated with the risk of breast cancer (5th v. 1st quintile, OR, 0·48; 95 % CI, 0·27, 0·86; P for trend, 0·026) after adjustment for potential confounders. After stratification analysis was performed according to menopausal status, premenopausal women (5th v. 1st quintile, OR, 0·44; 95 % CI, 0·24, 0·80; P for trend, 0·007) and postmenopausal women (5th v. 1st quintile, OR, 0·32; 95 % CI, 0·13, 0·80; P for trend, 0·06) showed similar inverse associations between gim intake and the risk of breast cancer after an adjustment for potential confounders except dietary factors. Miyeok consumption did not have any significant associations with breast cancer. These results suggest that high intake of gim may decrease the risk of breast cancer.

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer among Korean women. However, there are few data on dietary factors related to thyroid cancer risk. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between raw vegetables and fruits intake and thyroid cancer in a case–control study. We included 111 histologically confirmed malignant thyroid cancer cases and 115 benign cases. Controls who did not have nodules in thyroid ultrasonography were matched to cases by age ( ± 2 years). Food and nutrient intakes were estimated using a quantitative FFQ with 121 items. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to obtain OR and corresponding 95 % CI. The intake of total vegetables was not associated with malignant thyroid cancer, but inversely associated with benign cases. High raw vegetable intake was inversely associated with thyroid cancer risk both in malignant and benign cases (P for trend = 0·01 in both malignant and benign cases). Among fruits, persimmon intake had an inverse association with thyroid cancer risk in both malignant and benign cases (P for trend = 0·06 in malignant cases; P for trend = 0·01 in benign cases) and tangerine intake had an inverse association in malignant cases (P for trend = 0·03). The frequency of consumption of raw vegetables and persimmon also had a consistent inverse association in both malignant and benign cases. These results suggest that high consumption of raw vegetables, persimmons and tangerines may decrease thyroid cancer risk and help prevent early-stage thyroid cancer.

AbstractObjectiveTo study the association between lifetime alcohol consumption and the risk of breast cancer.Design and settingA case–control study carried out in eastern Finland. Information about alcohol consumption was obtained by two methods: a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) including alcohol consumption during the previous 12 months, and a lifetime alcohol consumption questionnaire (AQ) which was administered by the study nurse.SubjectsThe study consisted of 301 breast cancer cases (25–75 years old) and 443 population controls.ResultsThe subjects reported higher current alcohol consumption in the AQ compared to the FFQ. According to the AQ, premenopausal cases consumed on average 28 g and controls 24 g alcohol week−1; in postmenopausal women the values were 15 and 14 g, respectively. About 30% of premenopausal and 60% of postmenopausal women were classified as non-drinkers. The correlation for current alcohol consumption between the FFQ and the AQ was 0.80 in premenopausal women but only 0.40 in postmenopausal women. Current alcohol consumption seemed to influence the reporting of total lifetime alcohol consumption. Current alcohol consumption was not associated with the risk of breast cancer either in premenopausal or postmenopausal women; neither were associations found between alcohol consumption at age of first use, use before the age of 30, or total lifetime alcohol consumption and the risk of breast cancer.ConclusionsOn average, one to three drinks per week did not increase the risk of breast cancer in this study. Consumption levels were, however, too low to exclude increased risk with high regular consumption. Further research is necessary on lifetime alcohol consumption.

Identification of modifiable risk factors for breast cancer is critical for primary prevention of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate how certain lifestyle variables modify the chances of developing breast cancer based on menopausal status. A case-control study was performed in a group of 542 women, 197 who were diagnosed with breast cancer and 344 control individuals. The groups were matched by age, body mass index, and menopausal status. Participants were evaluated for level of physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, weight, height, and waist circumference (WC). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Regular consumption of alcoholic beverages (2.91, 95% CI 1.58–5.38 and 1.86, 95% CI 1.15–3.03) and sedentary behavior (2.08; 95% CI 1.12–3.85 and 1.81; 95% CI 1.12–2.94) were associated with breast cancer risk in pre- and postmenopausal women, respectively. High WC (3.31, 95% CI 1.45–7.55) was associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer in premenopausal women. While in postmenopausal women, current smoking (2.43, 95% CI 1.01–5.83) or previous history of smoking (1.90; 95% CI 1.14–3.14) increased the chances of developing breast cancer. Sedentary behavior and current consumption of alcoholic beverages were more likely to increase the risk of developing breast cancer regardless of menopausal status.

10012 Background: Some prospective studies in US and UK (represented by Women’s Health Initiative and Million Women Study) show that HRT use may increase the risk of breast cancer. However, it is unclear whether or not this perspective is applicable to Japanese women, due to several factors such as the difference in incidence of breast cancer, difference in HRT prevalence, which are to be concerned in this study. To investigate the relationship between HRT use and breast cancer, a case-control study was conducted in Japan. Methods: We sent self-administered questionnaire to 4,500 cases who have a previous history of confirmed histological breast cancer and 4,500 controls who were selected according to the inclusion criteria. All the subjects were between age 45 and 69 at the time of enrollment. Among these subjects, 3,434 in case group and 2,427 in control group sent back their questionnaire (total 5,861). The datacenter was run in Kitasato Univ. and the statistical analysis was performed using SAS (version 9.1). Control was selected by considering the screening record for GI disease and respiratory disorders, with no previous history of breast cancer, gynecological and hormonal disease at the time of screening. We asked about past history of exposure to the factors supposed to be breast cancer-causing; previous or current use of HRT, age at diagnosis, academic background, BMI, lifestyle habits, age of menarche, birth history, history of breast feeding, family history, use of contraceptive agents and menopausal status. Results: As the main analysis result, 164 (5.0%) out of 3,316 cases and 253 (7.4%) out of 2355 controls had used HRT (Odds ratio 0.432 [95% CI 0.352–0.530]. Conclusions: The result of this study shows that HRT users were less likely to develop breast cancer than never users. However, in this study, there was a difference in the observation period for the past use of HRT between cases and controls. Considering the transition of HRT prevalence in Japan, there may be a possibility that this difference can be a cause of a serious bias for the main analysis result. Further sensitivity analyses are needed to evaluate the robustness of the findings and this point is under consideration. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Aims: The present study aimed to identify the most associated risk factors of breast cancer in Ilam province in 2015–2016. Materials & methods: In this case–control study, the case group consisted of 50 women with breast cancer with a definitive diagnosis from date 23 September 2015 to 22 September 2016. The two groups were group matched in terms of age. Data were collected through interviews and medical records. Results: According to the results, there was a significant relationship between the disease status and variables of family history, history of irregular menstrual cycles, history of breastfeeding, menopausal status, history of oral contraceptive pill consumption, BMI, menarche and number of pregnancies (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Regarding decisive risk factors of breast cancer, more studies with larger sample sizes that take into account more risk factors are necessary.

Abstract Background: In recent years, lung cancer (LC) incidence has increased in Iran. The use of opium and its derivatives (O&D) has increased as well. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of O&D and LC incidence.Methods: In this case-control study conducted in Kerman, Iran; 140 patients with lung cancer and 280 healthy controls matched by age, sex, and place of residence were included. Data, including O&D use, cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and diet, were collected using a structured questionnaire. The relation between the use of O&D and LC was evaluated using conditional logistic regression adjusted for tobacco smoking, education, daily intake of fruit, vegetables, red meat, and hydrogenated fats.Results: Opium ever-use was associated with an increased risk of LC (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) =5.95, 95 % CI: 1.87 -18.92). Participants were divided into low and high use groups based on the median of opium use in the control group. A significant dose-response relation was observed between the amount of daily O&D use and LC; and the relation was stronger in high users (AOR low users = 3.81 % CI: 1.13 -12.77 and OR high users= 9.36, 95% CI: 2.05 -42.72). Also, LC was higher among participants starting the use of O&D at younger ages (≤ 41 years old vs never users AOR = 8.64, 95 % CI: 1.90 -39.18) compared to those who started at an older age ( >41 years old vs never users, AOR = 4.71, 95 % CI: 1.38 - 16.08). The association between opium, and lung cancer among non-smokers was OR: 6.50 (95% CI: 2.89 to 14.64).Conclusion: The results of this study show that opium use is probably a dose related risk factor for lung cancer.

BACKGROUND Gallbladder cancer and breast cancer are two common malignancies seen along the Ganges River and the Indo-Gangetic plains of northern India, especially in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Some of the postulated aetiologies include cholelithiasis (gallstones), typhoid carrier state, dietary factors, genetic predisposition and chemical carcinogens. Studies have also linked gallbladder cancer and breast cancer to carcinogens in polluted rivers. We undertook this study to investigate as to whether these conditions and gallstones were more prevalent in populations living close to polluted rivers. We also wanted to investigate as to whether there is any association between gallbladder cancer, gallstones and breast cancer with river pollution. METHODS This was a case-control study carried out in the Department of Oncology of a tertiary level defence hospital between 2018 and 2020. Patients who were diagnosed as having gallbladder cancer, gallstones or breast cancer in this tertiary institute, and were permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh or Bihar were included in the study. RESULTS In this study, we found that patients with gallbladder cancer, gallstones and breast cancer had their home closer to the river at a distance of around 53.9, 54 and 39.1 Kms. respectively compared to controls whose homes were at a distance of 76.7 Kms. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that proximity to polluted rivers is one more factor in the aetiology of aforementioned diseases. Governmental agencies must consider monitoring and controlling the release of pollutants from the industries into the local nearby rivers.
