The problem of defining a coherent cultural identity is one that has confronted generations of Afro-Americans. As part of the justification and defence of slavery and the slave trade many whites rationalized their actions by arguing that all Africans were cultureless savages. The same combination of guilt and arrogance induced them to attempt to suppress and denigrate surviving elements of a culture whose very existence they had already denied. Most black Americans responded to these pressures by rejecting Africa and their African heritage as a source of shame and by trying to deny and to erase their blackness. Malcom X clearly understood this when he proclaimed in 1965: ‘ We have been a people who hated our African characteristics. We hated our black heads, we hated the shape of our noses …, we hated the color of our skin.’ Identification with the dominant white culture took many forms. For some Blacks it involved the use of hair straightening and skin bleaching; for others it meant the elimination of any ethnic quality in their speech, dress, cuisine and religion; for many more it meant a life of morality and hard work lived according to the dictates of the Puritan ethic. The loss of any distinctive cultural identity involved in this process was made worse by the unwillingness of white society to recognize and accept the Afro-American as part of the dominant culture. In these circumstances many blacks found themselves in a cultural limbo without an adequate self-image. White domination of the media meant that they sometimes felt literally invisible. James Baldwin drew attention to this dilemma in a speech delivered in June 1963, when he noted that:A black child born in this country … discovers two terrifying things. First of all he discovers that he does not exits in it, no matter where he looks – by which I mean books, magazines, movies – there is no reflection of himself anywhere … [if] he finds anything which looks like him, he is authoritatively assured that this is a savage, or a comedian who has never contributed anything to civilization.

ABSTRACTPhotography is one of the media used to introduce the character or self-image of politicians during regional head elections, or presidential elections. Among them are by displaying photos of faces or campaign activities for APK (Campaign Props) billboards, namely billboards or billboards installed on protocol roads that can be seen by the public, pamphlets, mass media, and etc. Visual media in the form of photos has a very big influence on public opinion. Photography has a visual power that is able to construct the authenticity of factual events. The purpose of this study is to find out how the process of making photography a political visual communication medium in Indonesia. The method used is descriptive qualitative with an approach through the literature study method. The results of this study can be concluded that the process of making photography a political medium of visual communication to the public is carried out in several ways, namely by recruiting special photographers themselves, designing them, and distributing them. The effect of the message generated from a photography with a good appearance is the effect of knowledge and effect of information.Keywords:  Photography, Political Media, Visual Communication, Message Effects, Political Communication.  ABSTRAKFotografi merupakan salah satu media yang digunakan untuk mengenalkan karakter atau citra diri politisi saat pemilihan kepala daerah, ataupun pemilihan presiden. Diantaranya dengan memajang foto-foto wajah atau kegiatan kampanye untuk baliho APK (Alat Peraga Kampanye) yakni papan reklame atau billboard yang dipasang di jalan-jalan protokol yang bisa dilihat oleh masyarakat luas, pamflet, media massa, dan sebagainya. Media visual berupa foto sangat besar pengaruhnya mempengaruhi opini publik. Fotografi memiliki kekuatan visual yang mampu mengkonstruksi keotentikan peristiwa faktual. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana proses menjadikan fotografi sebagai media komunikasi visual politik di Indonesia. Metode yang digunakan deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan melalui metode studi literatur. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa proses menjadikan fotografi sebagai media politik komunikasi visual kepada masyarakat dilakukan dengan beberapa cara, yakni dengan merekrut khusus fotografer sendiri, mendesainnya, dan menyebarkannya. Efek pesan yang ditimbulkan dari sebuah fotografi dengan tampilan yang baik adalah efek pengetahuan dan efek informasi.Kata Kunci: Fotografi, Media Politik, Komunikasi Visual, Efek Pesan, Komunikasi Politik.

Lack of a common means of verbal or written communication always creates problems of interpersonal communication and gives rise to misunderstandings and (possibly) prejudice against one or other party. On the surface, there would seem to be a good deal of merit in the suggestion that “if everyone spoke the same language, all these problems would disappear”. However, the matter is not as simple as it seems, for questions must be asked as to what language should be chosen, the dialect of it, and to what extent cultural factors, deeply related to the true understanding of how thought is expressed within a language, need to be addressed. In Australia, most reasonably well education Anglo-Celtic Australians asked these questions would immediately think of Standard Australian English (SAE), though working-class and indigenous Australians may consider it too “posh” and out of touch with their lifestyles. Few from the dominant group, however, would be even remotely aware of the degree to which cultural factors influence how thought is expressed in a language (as already mentioned), and how this influences the spoken language and, more particularly, the written language in a literate society.

This article examines blackfishing, a practice in which cultural and economic agents appropriate Black culture and urban aesthetics in an effort to capitalize on Black markets. Specifically, this study analyzes the Instagram accounts of four influencers (Instagram models) who were accused of blackfishing in late 2018 and is supplemented with a critical analysis of 27 news and popular press articles which comprise the media discourse surrounding the controversy. Situated within the literature on cultural appropriation and urban redevelopment policies, this study explores how Black identity is mined for its cultural and economic value in the context of digital labor. I assert that Instagram’s unique platform affordances (including its racial affordances) and the neoliberal logics which undergird cultural notions of labor facilitate the mechanisms by which Black identity is rendered a lucrative commodity vis-à-vis influencing.

In the article, the authors are based on the verdict that the main and most important element of world religion is the phenomenon of the prophets. However, at the beginning of the New century as a world. Similarly, in regional terms, the media reports about false prophets and insults to religious prophets, including the great prophet Muhammad, which negatively affects the feelings of believers in the Muslim world. According to the authors of the article, this seriously depresses the international political situation, since the cult of the Holy prophets is recognized as the meaning-forming basis of the Muslim faith. The article proves that the goal of Islam in the formation and development of the socio-cultural life of Muslims is based on the strengthening of spiritual and cultural identity, based on the priority of recognizing the Majesty of the prophet Muhammad, that any skepticism or insults is a threat to the entire system of Islam's ideology. The authors note that the life of the great Muhammad is generally accepted as an example of the righteous organization of the personal and collective life of the Muslim community, which forms the highest qualities of spiritual and moral culture among believers.

AbstractThis article explores some rare sides of twin research. The focus of this article is the sad plight of the Dionne quintuplets, born in Canada in 1934. However, several other studies belong in this category, such as Dr Josef Mengele’s horrifying twin research conducted at the Auschwitz concentration camp, Dr John Money’s misguided attempt to turn an accidentally castrated male twin into a female, Russian scientists’ cruel medical study of conjoined female twins and Dr Peter Neubauer’s secret project that tracked the development of separated twins. Reviews of current twin research span twins’ representation of self-image, twins with Kleine–Levin Syndrome, heteropaternal twinning in lemurs and factors affecting risk of dental caries. Media coverage includes a pair of high-society models, a book about the ‘Winkelevii’ twins, Super Bowl twin teammates, a family with three sets of fraternal twins, a twin sister surrogate and a near presidential twin.

Of all evils in American society, racial oppression is the most intolerable. Of all priorities for American society, the attainment of racial justice is the most urgent. This is so because the issue of race touches on the very heart of the moral values by which the society lives. Martin Luther King understood this, and the same understanding illuminates his idea of an integrated American society.The ideal is not only the integration of black Americans in terms of all the rights and privileges promised by the society's political creed; and it is not at all integration that deprives blacks of their cultural identity, as King's detractors (including the posthumous ones) have falsely claimed.

The review of Witold Gombrowicz’s self-image due to questions and tasks of anthropology of literature pro- vides a possibility to make an analysis of such aspects and motivators as family, civilization process, role in national cultural process, position in social formations. Analysis is based on Gombrowicz’s prose, memoirs and personal correspondence. Psychological portrait of character-narrator and author himself – autobiographism is pronounced in each Gombrowicz’s main character – is depicted very clearly and has the signs of emotional influences experienced by the writer in his childhood and further years. These influences have formed Gombrowicz’s philosophical concepts, especially his theory of Form, and deter- mined writer’s position in questions of national and cultural identity. Answers on one of the most important issues that anthropology of literature tries to resolve – for what purpose a writer creates virtual worlds – can be successfully looked for in Witold Gombrowicz’s works. Universalism and ubiquity of self-im- age in all literary works is one of the unique features which makes Gombrowicz a perfect object for anthropology of literature. As several scientists have noted, the whole heritage of Gombrowicz is a one large novel with the same character who faces various circumstances and tries to manage them. Reactions, motivations, positions of this character are usually equal to author’s – Gombrowicz always considered himself as the most important and main character. So Gombrowicz’s works become an extremely fruitful field for literary-anthropological research – the writer writes only about himself, he analyses deeply his psychological features and external influences which motivated his actions and formed his opinions. This research is the beginning of a prospective road – the main questions are claimed, the main vectors are defined and the general overview of problematics is made; the deeper analysis of Gombrowicz’s prose and memoirs with usage of literary-anthropolog- ical instruments and considering of it’s issues demand more expanded study which will shortly appear in Ukrainian Polish studies.

AbstractThe newly formed United Arab Emirates appears to be making strides towards the empowerment of women, with women becoming visible in public roles—particularly as professional broadcasters in the media and high-ranking ministers in government posts. However, some evidence suggests that in reality, the progress of women may be a patriarchal image created merely for the sake of appearances as part of the emerging nation's political agenda that seeks to convey the image of a 'modern' state. Fundamentally laws are still biased against women and the education system is still embedding gender bias into the minds of youths via the nation's core curriculum. On the positive side, those visible roles given to women as part of nation-state building and cultural identity projects cannot fail to lead to changes in the social perception of women. However, the fear is that the more the state focuses on creating an image; real change at the grass roots level will be sidelined.

It would be too early to try and summarize the way in which the issue of Russia’s “state historical and remembrance policy” has evolved or foresee its possible outcomes, as the standard uniform set of schoolbooks has not yet been approved. The media-voting competitions presented in this essay, however, clearly demonstrate the national social climate and its trends, which would have to be moulded into some form of an “all-Russian socium” by such a new approach to history. As contemporaries we might curiously await the next rounds of the “identity battle,” but as historians we must give voice to scepticism in regards to hopes of any form of quick success. Yet most of all, we have to stand by the deep conviction that only a pluralistic approach to history based on free research and the freedom to present freely conceived alternatives can help in the crystallization of a realistic national self-image. P.S.: For the first time in the history of Russia a statue has been erected for Ivan IV (the Terrible, the Fearsome) in the city of Oryol on 15 October 2016. The countdown has begun.
