Finite-amplitude convection in the presence of an unsteady shear flow

The effect of an unsteady shear flow on the planform of convection in a Boussinesq fluid heated from below is investigated. In the absence of the shear flow it is well-known, if non-Boussinesq effects can be neglected, that convection begins in the form of a supercritical bifurcation to rolls. Subcritical convection in the form of say hexagons can be induced by non-Boussinesq behaviour which destroys the symmetry of the basic state. Here it is found that the symmetry breaking effects associated with an unsteady shear flow are not sufficient to cause subcritical convection so the problem reduces to the determination of how the orientations of roll cells are modified by an unsteady shear flow. Recently Kelly & Hu (1993) showed that such a flow has a significant stabilizing effect on the linear stability problem and that, for a wide range of Prandtl numbers, the effect is most pronounced in the low-frequency limit. In the present calculation it is shown that the stabilizing effects found by Kelly & Hu (1993) do survive for most frequencies when nonlinear effects and imperfections are taken into account. However a critical size of the frequency is identified below which the Kelly & Hu (1993) conclusions no longer carry through into the nonlinear regime. For frequencies of size comparable with this critical size it is shown that the convection pattern changes in time. The cell pattern is found to be extremely complicated and straight rolls exist only for part of a period.

The linear stability of doubly diffusive convection is considered for a two-dimensional, Boussinesq fluid in a tall thin slot. For a variety of boundary conditions on the slot walls, instability sets in through zero wavenumber over a wide range of physical conditions. Long-wave equations governing the nonlinear development of the instability are derived. The form of the long-wave equations sensitively depends on the thermal and salt boundary conditions; the possible long-wave theories are catalogued. Finite-amplitude solutions and their stability are studied. In some cases the finite-amplitude solutions are not the only possible attractors and numerical solutions presenting the alternatives are given. These reveal temporally complicated dynamics.

AbstractIn a recent article (Nouar, Bottaro & Brancher, J. Fluid. Mech., vol. 592, 2007, pp. 177–194), a linear stability analysis of plane Poiseuille flow of shear-thinning fluids has been performed. The authors concluded that the viscosity stratification delays the transition and that is important to account for the viscosity perturbation. The current paper focuses on the first-principles understanding of the influence of the viscosity stratification and the nonlinear variation of the effective viscosity $\ensuremath{\mu} $ with the shear rate $\dot {\gamma } $ on the flow stability with respect to a finite-amplitude perturbation. A weakly nonlinear analysis, using the amplitude expansion method, is adopted as a first approach to study nonlinear effects. The bifurcation to two-dimensional travelling waves is studied. For the numerical computations, the shear-thinning behaviour is described by the Carreau model. The rheological parameters are varied in a wide range. The results indicate that (i) the nonlinearity of the viscous terms tends to reduce the viscous dissipation and to accelerate the flow, (ii) the harmonic generated by the nonlinearity $\ensuremath{\mu} (\dot {\gamma } )$ is smaller and in opposite phase to that generated by the quadratic nonlinear inertial terms and (iii) with increasing shear-thinning effects, the bifurcation becomes highly subcritical. Consequently, the magnitude of the threshold amplitude of the perturbation, beyond which the flow is nonlinearly unstable, decreases. This result is confirmed by computing higher order-Landau constants.

AbstractThe radio sky at frequencies of several MHz and below is essentially unexplored with high angular resolution due to refraction and opacity in the Earth’s ionosphere. An interferometer array in space providing arcminute resolution images would allow a wide range of problems in solar, planetary, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy to be attacked. These include the evolution of solar and planetary radio bursts, interplanetary and interstellar scintillation, the distribution of low energy cosmic rays and diffuse ionized hydrogen in our galaxy, the determination of spectral turnover frequencies and magnetic field strengths in galactic and extragalactic radio sources, searches for “fossil” radio galaxies which are no longer detectable by high frequency surveys, and searches for new sources of coherent radio emission. In addition, it is likely that unexpected objects and emission processes will be discovered by such an instrument, as has often happened when high resolution observations first become possible in a new spectral region. The Moon can provide shielding from terrestrial interference (and from the Sun half of the time) and consequently the lunar farside surface offers an ideal site of a low frequency radio array.

Background: The default mode interference hypothesis ( Sonuga-Barke & Castellanos, 2007 ) predicts (1) the attenuation of very low frequency oscillations (VLFO; e.g., .05 Hz) in brain activity within the default mode network during the transition from rest to task, and (2) that failures to attenuate in this way will lead to an increased likelihood of periodic attention lapses that are synchronized to the VLFO pattern. Here, we tested these predictions using DC-EEG recordings within and outside of a previously identified network of electrode locations hypothesized to reflect DMN activity (i.e., S3 network; Helps et al., 2008 ). Method: 24 young adults (mean age 22.3 years; 8 male), sampled to include a wide range of ADHD symptoms, took part in a study of rest to task transitions. Two conditions were compared: 5 min of rest (eyes open) and a 10-min simple 2-choice RT task with a relatively high sampling rate (ISI 1 s). DC-EEG was recorded during both conditions, and the low-frequency spectrum was decomposed and measures of the power within specific bands extracted. Results: Shift from rest to task led to an attenuation of VLFO activity within the S3 network which was inversely associated with ADHD symptoms. RT during task also showed a VLFO signature. During task there was a small but significant degree of synchronization between EEG and RT in the VLFO band. Attenuators showed a lower degree of synchrony than nonattenuators. Discussion: The results provide some initial EEG-based support for the default mode interference hypothesis and suggest that failure to attenuate VLFO in the S3 network is associated with higher synchrony between low-frequency brain activity and RT fluctuations during a simple RT task. Although significant, the effects were small and future research should employ tasks with a higher sampling rate to increase the possibility of extracting robust and stable signals.

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure (ETS) and smoking have been described as the most prevalent factors in the development of certain diseases worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, more than 8 million people die every year due to exposure to tobacco, around 7 million due to direct ETS and the remaining due to exposure to second-hand smoke. Both active and second-hand exposure can be measured and controlled using specific biomarkers of tobacco and its derivatives, allowing the development of more efficient public health policies. Exposure to these compounds can be measured using different methods (involving for instance liquid- or gas-chromatographic procedures) in a wide range of biological specimens to estimate the type and degree of tobacco exposure. In recent years, a lot of research has been carried out using different extraction methods and different analytical equipment; this way, liquid–liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction or even miniaturized procedures have been used, followed by chromatographic analysis coupled mainly to mass spectrometric detection. Through this type of methodologies, second-hand smokers can be distinguished from active smokers, and this is also valid for e-cigarettes and vapers, among others, using their specific biomarkers. This review will focus on recent developments in the determination of tobacco smoke biomarkers, including nicotine and other tobacco alkaloids, specific nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. The methods for their detection will be discussed in detail, as well as the potential use of threshold values to distinguish between types of exposure.

This study aims to investigate the applicability of a hybrid electrochemical sensor composed of cork and graphite (Gr) for detecting caffeine in aqueous solutions. Raw cork (RAC) and regranulated cork (RGC, obtained by thermal treatment of RAC with steam at 380 °C) were tested as modifiers. The results clearly showed that the cork-graphite sensors, GrRAC and GrRGC, exhibited a linear response over a wide range of caffeine concentration (5–1000 µM), with R2 of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD), estimated at 2.9 and 6.1 µM for GrRAC and GrRGC, suggest greater sensitivity and reproducibility than the unmodified conventional graphite sensor. The low-cost cork-graphite sensors were successfully applied in the determination of caffeine in soft drinks and pharmaceutical formulations, presenting well-defined current signals when analyzing real samples. When comparing electrochemical determinations and high performance liquid chromatography measurements, no significant differences were observed (mean accuracy 3.0%), highlighting the potential use of these sensors to determine caffeine in different samples.

Acute febrile illnesses occur frequently in Guinea. Acute fever itself is not a unique, hallmark indication (pathognomonic sign) of any one illness or disease. In the infectious disease context, fever’s underlying cause can be a wide range of viral or bacterial pathogens, including the Ebola virus. In this study, molecular and serological methods were used to analyze samples from patients hospitalized with acute febrile illness in various regions of Guinea. This analysis was undertaken with the goal of accomplishing differential diagnosis (determination of causative pathogen) in such cases. As a result, a number of pathogens, both viral and bacterial, were identified in Guinea as causative agents behind acute febrile illness. In approximately 60% of the studied samples, however, a definitive determination could not be made.

This publication presents the results of complex parametrical strength investigations of typical wings for regional aircrafts obtained by means of the new version of the four-level algorithm (FLA) with the modified module responsible for the analysis of aerodynamic loading. This version of FLA, as well as a base one, is focused on significant decreasing time and labor input of a complex strength analysis of airframes by using simultaneously different principles of decomposition. The base version includes four-level decomposition of airframe and decomposition of strength tasks. The new one realizes additional decomposition of alternative variants of load cases during the process of determination of critical load cases. Such an algorithm is very suitable for strength analysis and designing airframes of regional aircrafts having a wide range of aerodynamic concepts. Results of validation of the new version of FLA for a high-aspect-ratio wing obtained in this work confirmed high performance of the algorithm in decreasing time and labor input of strength analysis of airframes at the preliminary stages of designing. During parametrical design investigation, some interesting results for strut-braced wings having high aspect ratios were obtained.
