A theoretical investigation of banded chorus

This paper is a computational study of nonlinear resonant particle trajectories in wave fields consisting of an array of narrow-band waves of closely spaced frequencies and wavenumbers. It looks at two analogous systems, cyclotron resonance with a whistler wavefield and Landau resonance with an electrostatic wave field. It is found that the wave array is able to trap particles in much the same way as a single mode. Inhomogeneity plays a vital role by causing the energy of trapped particles to change.The nonlinear resonant particle current is such as to preserve the modal structure of the wave field, and it does not change the frequency of an individual mode. Power distribution amongst the modes is far from even. Most of the energy goes into the mode at one end of the array, depending on the direction of the inhomogeneity. Also, nonlinear resonant particle excitation of a broad band signal was found to cause spectral structuring to develop automatically.The theory was applied to one of Coroniti's FTRS analyses of banded chorus elements. The observed spectral behaviour closely accorded with the computational results. The numbers involved fitted the theory very well, and strongly suggested that nonlinear cyclotron resonant particle excitation is the mechanism for banded chorus.

The correlation and power distribution of intercore crosstalk (ICXT) field components of weakly coupled multicore fibers (WC-MCFs) are important properties that determine the statistics of the ICXT and ultimately impact the performance of WC-MCF optical communication systems. Using intensive numerical simulation of the coupled mode equations describing ICXT of a single-mode WC-MCF with intracore birefringence and linear propagation, we assess the mean, correlation, and power distribution of the four ICXT field components of unmodulated polarization-coupled homogeneous and quasi-homogeneous WC-MCFs with a single interfering core in a wide range of birefringence conditions and power distribution among the field components at the interfering core input. It is shown that, for homogeneous and quasi-homogeneous WC-MCFs, zero mean uncorrelated ICXT field components with similar power levels are observed for birefringence correlation length and birefringence beat length in the ranges of 0.5m,10m and 0.1m,10m, respectively, regardless of the distribution of power between the four field components at the interfering core input.

The Kondo effect in a quantum dot is discussed. In the standard Coulomb blockade setting, tunneling between the dot and the leads is weak, the number of electrons in the dot is well-defined and discrete; the Kondo effect may be considered in the framework of the conventional one-level Anderson impurity model. It turns out however, that the Kondo temperature TK in the case of weak tunneling is extremely low. In the opposite case of almost reflectionless single-mode junctions connecting the dot to the leads, the average charge of the dot is not discrete. Surprisingly, its spin may remain quantized: s=1/2 or s=0, depending (periodically) on the gate voltage. Such a "spin-charge separation" occurs because, unlike an Anderson impurity, a quantum dot carries a broad-band, dense spectrum of discrete levels. In the doublet state, the Kondo effect develops with a significantly enhanced TK. Like in the weak-tunneling regime, the enhanced TK exhibits strong mesoscopic fluctuations. The statistics of the fluctuations is universal, and related to the Porter-Thomas statistics of the wave function fluctuations.

ABSTRACT Enabling efficient injection of light into single-mode fibres (SMFs) is a key requirement in realizing diffraction-limited astronomical spectroscopy on ground-based telescopes. SMF-fed spectrographs, facilitated by the use of adaptive optics (AO), offer distinct advantages over comparable seeing-limited designs, including higher spectral resolution within a compact and stable instrument volume, and a telescope independent spectrograph design. iLocater is an extremely precise radial velocity (EPRV) spectrograph being built for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We have designed and built the front-end fibre injection system, or acquisition camera, for the SX (left) primary mirror of the LBT. The instrument was installed in 2019 and underwent on-sky commissioning and performance assessment. In this paper, we present the instrument requirements, acquisition camera design, as well as results from first-light measurements. Broad-band SMF coupling in excess of 35 per cent (absolute) in the near-infrared (0.97–1.31 ${\mu {\rm m}}$) was achieved across a range of target magnitudes, spectral types, and observing conditions. Successful demonstration of on-sky performance represents both a major milestone in the development of iLocater and in making efficient ground-based SMF-fed astronomical instruments a reality.

Couplers and splitters are common devices in single-mode and multi-mode glass fibers applications, where they perform a variety of functions. However, when switching to plastic optical fibers (POFs), there is a shortage of commercial devices, which are usually custom-made. The problem with these devices is that modal power distribution in POFs is easily modified by spatial disturbances that produce a localized strong power transfer between modes, thus changing their transmission properties. In this work, a commercial Y-coupler designed for POFs is experimentally characterized. Measurements of its spectral, spatial and temporal characteristics have been performed, including insertion loss as a function of wavelength, angular power distribution, and frequency response. The obtained results show that this device has an equalizing effect over the power spatial distribution that reduces the fiber bandwidth, demonstrating the importance of considering the impact of this type of devices on the transmission properties of any POF system.

The vortex-induced vibration response of long cables subjected to vertically sheared flow was investigated in two field experiments. In a typical experiment, a weight was hung over the side of the research vessel by a cable that was instrumented with accelerometers. A typical experiment measured the acceleration response of the cable, the current profile, the tension, and angle of inclination at the top of the cable. Total drag force was computed from the tension and angle measurements. Two braided Kevlar cables were tested at various lengths from 100 to 9,050 ft. As a result of these experiments, several important conclusions can be drawn: (i) the wave propagation along the length of the cable was damped, and therefore, under most conditions the cable behaved like an infinite string; (ii) response spectra were quite broad-band, with center frequencies determined by the flow speed in the region of the accelerometer; (iii) single mode lock-in was not observed for long cables in the sheared current profile; (iv) the average drag coefficient of long cables subjected to sheared flow was considerably lower than observed on short cables in uniform flows; (v) the r.m.s. response was higher in regions of higher current speed. A new dimensionless parameter is proposed that incorporates the properties of the cable as well as the sheared flow. This parameter is useful in establishing the likelihood that lock-in may occur, as well as in estimating the number of modes likely to respond.
