The effect of shock loading on a variety of steels has been reviewed recently by Leslie. It is generally observed that significant changes in microstructure and microhardness are produced by explosive shock deformation. While the effect of shock loading on austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and pearlitic structures has been investigated, there have been no systematic studies of the shock-loading of microduplex structures. In the current investigation, the shock-loading response of millrolled and heat-treated Uniloy 326 (thickness 60 mil) having a residual grain size of 1 to 2μ before shock loading was studied. Uniloy 326 is a two phase (microduplex) alloy consisting of 30% austenite (γ) in a ferrite (α) matrix; with the composition.3% Ti, 1% Mn, .6% Si,.05% C, 6% Ni, 26% Cr, balance Fe.

The close correlation of strength properties with twin density in 304 stainless steel and manganese steel, has suggested indirectly that twin boundaries act as significant hardening mechanisms by acting as dislocation barriers. The presence of twins can be regarded as a grain-size refinement which can be viewed in terms of the Hall-Petch relation as producing an increase in the flow stress. In the present study, 60 mil thick sheets of Uniloy 326, having a residual grain size of 1 to 2 μ were explosively shock loaded. The shock loading was performed in sandwich assemblies containing 304 and 316 stainless steels as reference materials utilizing techniques previously described.

Two-phase nanocrystalline ribbons were prepared by melt-spun and subsequent heat treatment. Excellent magnetic properties of the bonded magnet were achieved as follows: Br = 0.67 T, JHc = 664.3 kA·m-1, (BH) max = 75.0 kJ·m-3. The mean grain size of the ribbons heat-treated at 710 °C/ 4 min is about 50 nm. After heat-treated the ribbons at 750 °C/ 4 min, the mean grain size is about 100 nm.

Historically, metals exhibit superplasticity only while forming in a two-phase field because a two-phase microstructure helps ensure a fine, stable grain size. In the U-5.8 Nb alloy, superplastici ty exists for up to 2 h in the single phase field (γ1) at 670°C. This is above the equilibrium monotectoid temperature of 647°C. Utilizing dilatometry, the superplastic (SP) U-5.8 Nb alloy requires superheating to 658°C to initiate the α+γ2 → γ1 transformation at a heating rate of 1.5°C/s. Hence, the U-5.8 Nb alloy exhibits an anomolous superplastic behavior.

This study evaluated the microstructure, grain size, and mechanical properties of the alloy 800H rotary friction welds in as-welded and post-weld heat-treated conditions. The standards for the alloy 800H not only specify the composition and mechanical properties but also the minimum grain sizes. This is because these alloys are mostly used in creep resisting applications. The dynamic recrystallization of the highly strained and plasticized material during friction welding resulted in the fine grain structure (20 ± 2 µm) in the weld zone. However, a small increase in grain size was observed in the heat-affected zone of the weldment with a slight decrease in hardness compared to the base metal. Post-weld solution heat treatment (PWHT) of the friction weld joints increased the grain size (42 ± 4 µm) in the weld zone. Both as-welded and post-weld solution heat-treated friction weld joints failed in the heat-affected zone during the room temperature tensile testing and showed a lower yield strength and ultimate tensile strength than the base metal. A fracture analysis of the failed tensile samples revealed ductile fracture features. However, in high-temperature tensile testing, post-weld solution heat-treated joints exhibited superior elongation and strength compared to the as-welded joints due to the increase in the grain size of the weld metal. It was demonstrated in this study that the minimum grain size requirement of the alloy 800H friction weld joints could be successfully met by PWHT with improved strength and elongation, especially at high temperatures.

The microstructural changes of electroless Ni–P–Cu coating at various heat-treatment conditions are investigated to understand its implications on the tribological behavior of the coating. Coatings are heat-treated at temperatures ranging between 200°C and 800 °C and for 1–4 h duration. Ni–P–Cu coatings exhibit two-phase transformations in the temperature range of 350–450 °C and the resulting microstructural changes are found to significantly affect their thermal stability and tribological attributes. Hardness of the coating doubles when heat-treated at 452 °C, due to the formation of harder Ni3P phase and crystalline NiCu. Better friction and wear performance are also noted upon heat treatment of the coating at the phase transformation regime, particularly at 400 °C. Wear mechanism is characterized by a mixed adhesive cum abrasive wear phenomena. Heat treatment at higher temperature (600 °C and above) and longer duration (4 h) results in grain coarsening phenomenon, which negatively influences the hardness and tribological characteristics of the coating. Besides, diffusion of iron from the ferrous substrate as well as greater oxide formation are noticed when the coating is heat-treated at higher temperatures and for longer durations (4 h).

In the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V the dual-phase grain structure, which forms during thermo-mechanical processing, is of high importance due to its effect on the mechanical properties. In general the most significant microstructural parameters are the amount of alpha and beta phase as well as their grain size. For this reason a new cellular automata method (CA) was developed to predict the evolving grain structure during isothermal and non-isothermal heat treatment. The probabilistic CA model is based on the diffusion controlled movement of grain and phase boundaries. During temperature changes an algorithm is adjusting alpha and beta phase fraction to maintain equilibrium phase values. Hence, the CA is capable to calculate grain coarsening as well as grain growth and shrinking in the two-phase area while heating and isothermal holding at forging temperature. The initial microstructure can be imported form virtual created microstructures, real micrographs and EBSD-images. The results are mean grain diameters, grain size distributions and virtually simulated microstructures which can be easily compared with real micrographs. The predicted microstructures are showing a good correlation to data in literature and experimental results.

AbstractNano-grained Fe-29Al-2Cr intermetallic and Fe-Cu two-phase composites have been consolidated to full density from powders produced by high-energy ball milling, using a sinter forging procedure developed recently in our laboratory. Grain sizes remained within nanophase range (<100 nm) after consolidation. Microhardness tests of Fe-29Al-2Cr samples consolidated to different density levels indicate a significant strengthening effect due to nanoscale grain size and a monotonic microhardness increase with decreasing residual porosity. Fully dense Fe-Cu composites exhibit enhanced microhardness as compared with rule-of-mixtures predictions, which may be attributable to interface strengthening at fcc-bcc interphase boundaries.

ABSTRACTThis article describes the phase stability, microstructures and mechanical properties of silicide-reinforced Nb alloys in Nb-Mo-W-Si quaternary system prepared by arc melting and heat treatment. There exists an equilibrium two-phase field of Nb solid solution (Nbss) and α(Nb,Mo,W)5Si3 in a Nb-rich region of this quaternary system. Alloys in this region have a eutectic reaction of L → Nbss+β(Nb,Mo,W)5Si3 during solidification. The β(Nb,Mo,W)5Si3 transforms to the stable α(Nb,Mo,W)5Si3 at very high temperature. The cast and heat treated hypoeutectic alloys consist of dendritic Nbss, network-shaped Nbss matrix and α(Nb,Mo,W)5Si3. These quaternary alloys exhibit excellent high-temperature strength, although the fracture toughness is still unacceptable for practical applications.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the influence of different post-annealing cooling conditions, i.e. furnace cooling (heat treatment (HT) 1 – slow cooling) and air cooling (HT 2 – fast cooling), on the microstructure and mechanical properties of selective laser melting (SLM) built austenitic 316L stainless steel (SS). Design/methodology/approach Three sets of 316L SS samples were fabricated using a machine standard scanning strategy. Each set consists of three tensile samples and a cubic sample for microstructural investigations. Two sets were subsequently subjected to annealing HT with different cooling conditions, i.e. HT 1 and HT 2, whereas one set was used in the as-built (AB) condition. The standard metallographic techniques of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron back-scattered diffraction were used to investigate the microstructural variations induced by different cooling conditions. The resultant changes in mechanical properties were also investigated. Findings The phase change of SLM fabricated 316L was observed to be independent of the investigated cooling conditions and all samples consist of austenite phase only. Both HT 1 and HT 2 lead to dissolved characteristic melt pools of SLM. Noticeable increase in grain size of HT 1 and HT 2 samples was also observed. Compared with AB samples, the grain size of HT 1 and HT 2 was increased by 12.5% and 50%, respectively. A decreased hardness and strength, along with an increased ductility was also observed for HT 2 samples compared with HT 1 and AB samples. Originality/value From previous studies, it has been noticed that most investigations on HT of SLM fabricated 316L were mainly focused on the HT temperature or holding time. However, the post-HT cooling rate is also an equally important factor in deciding the microstructure and mechanical properties of heat-treated components. Therefore, this paper investigates the influence of different post-annealing cooling conditions on microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM fabricated 316L components. This study provides a foundation for considering the post-HT cooling rate as an influential parameter that controls the properties of heat-treated SLM components.
