We examined the influence of fruit availability and habitat disturbance, including past and recent forest fires, on an assemblage of hornbills over a four-month period in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Sumatra. The assemblage is dominated by Wreathed Hornbills Aceros undulatus (7.5 birds/km2), followed by Bushy-crested Hornbills Anorrhinus galeritus (3.05 birds/km2), Rhinoceros Hornbills Buceros rhinoceros (2.6 birds/km2), and Helmeted Hornbills Buceros vigil (1.9 birds/km2). Overall densities for each species were consistent with estimates from other South-East Asian sites but densities varied temporally and spatially, even for territorial species. We speculate that Rhinoceros and Helmeted Hornbills may exhibit facultative territoriality or they may not be territorial at this site. We found a positive relationship between temporal variability in hornbill numbers and the availability of ripe fruits. All hornbills, especially Rhinoceros and Bushy-crested Hornbills, tended to avoid highly disturbed areas; these areas had a lower than expected number of fruiting trees in five important hornbill diet families. Densities of Bushy-Crested, Rhinoceros, and Helmeted Hornbills declined from 28 to 63% in the post-burn surveys. Wreathed Hornbills, however, increased slightly in the post-burn surveys, possibly because they were nesting there at the time. Movement of hornbills between disturbed and primary forest habitat may enhance regeneration of disturbed areas if hornbills are transporting viable seeds.

Monitoring forest cover to find out deforestation activities in a national park serves as an important task. This study aims to analyze forest cover changes in Gunung Palung National Park from 1989 to 2018. The method employs visual interpretation aided by supervised classification with the maximum likelihood method. Remote sensing data involved 18 Landsat images from 1989 to 2018 path/row 121/61. The results indicated that Gunung Palung National Park had 97,148 hectares of primary forest losing its 10% of its forest (since 1989). The primary forest decreased to 72,684 hectares in 1997 and 69,851 hectares in 2018. To date, primary forest cover has been found stable with secondary forests reaching to 25,050 hectares occupying 26% of Gunung Palung National Park area. Deforestation in Gunung Palung National Park was due to illegal logging and forest fires as a result of El Nio influence. The results of the analysis informed that there was an insignificant deforestation in Gunung Palung National Park during in the period of 2016 - 2018. In sum, conservation programs are encouraged to sustain, despite a decline in deforestation activities at Gunung Palung National Park. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sejak tahun 1989 TN Gunung Palung memiliki hutan primer seluas 97.148 hektar atau telah kehilangan 10% hutannya. Luas hutan primer menurun menjadi 72.684 hektar di tahun 1997 dan menjadi 69.851 hektar ditahun 2018. Saat ini kondisi tutupan hutan primer dalam kondisi stabil dengan hutan sekunder mencapai 25.050 hektar atau 26% dari luas TN Gunung Palung. Deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung disebabkan oleh pembalakan liar dan kebakaran hutan akibat pengaruh El Nio. Hasil analisis tidak ditemukan deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung selama rentang 2016 2018. Program konservasi harus tetap dilakukan walaupun telah terjadi penurunan aktivitas deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung.Kata kunci: Taman Nasional Gunung Palung, konservasi hutan, deforestasi

  The welfare level of the population in Wasur Park village is still very low and most still hang its life by taking the result of the forest. This study aims to analyze the role of Wasur Park National Park in increasing local people's income. The method by which researchers use a qualitative approach, while the data collection techniques consist of library studies and field studies through observation, interviews. The process of data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and the conclusion of the empowerment of the National Park Wasur Park Hall is counseling to the local community in the framework of the Empowerment Program of local Kampung Wasur Park. In the empowerment, Wasur Park National Park is coordinating with local governments to see the development of local community data. The real evidence of Wasur Park National Park through empowerment is the establishment of a rural forestry Counseling Center (SPKP). The establishment of a rural forestry Counseling Center (SPKP) in Wasur Village, implemented after the implementation of education and training of village studies in participatory. Furthermore, Wasur Park National Park Hall conducts construction. The construction is a construction of small industry of eucalyptus oil refining, the manufacture of salted fish, medicinal plants, and the cultivation of commercial crops. Then the community in providing coaching through socialization by providing science about preserving the forest and protection and safeguarding the potential of Wasur National Park area. Then Wasur Park National Park Hall conducts supervision. Supervision conducted by the National Park Hall Wasur Park is monitoring against the hunting of many protected animals located in Wasur Park National Park area. In the Garden Hall program, Wasur Park is monitoring and evaluation of habitat and population. The Wasur Park National Park Hall conducts a regular patrol, preventing wild hunters from Wasur Park National Park. Then patrol is also done to prevent forest fires.

Strangler fig density varied considerably in the evergreen forest of Karian Shola National Park, southern India, with 11 individuals ha−1 in an open trail area and 5.6 individuals ha−1 within the primary forest area. The index of light level was assessed by estimating the percentage of upper canopy cover along the longitudinal centre of ten, 500-m × 20-m plots in each of the two areas of the evergreen forest. However, the increase in strangler fig density was not correlated to light levels but was significantly correlated to the numbers of their main host species in the two areas. In Karian Shola National Park, strangler figs occurred predominantly on a few host species with 20 and 50% of strangler figs growing on Vitex altissima, Diospyros bourdilloni and Eugenia/Syzygium spp. in the primary forest and trail areas respectively. Both young and established strangler figs were recorded mainly on larger individuals of their host trees indicating that older host trees are likely to be more suitable for the germination and establishment of strangler figs. The reason for the above could be the higher incidence of humus-filled and decaying regions in the older host trees which would provide an assured supply of nutrients for the establishing strangler fig.

Forest fires cause losses and negative impact. Forest fire in mountain Ciremai national park caused by human factor. Efforts to control forest fires currently preferred by involving the community. This research is done using primary data and information obtained from filling the questionnaire. Research is taking samples from three villages namely Cibuntu village, Padabeunghar villages, and Kaduela village. Respondents were interviewed 90 respondents. Based on researches known that the area around the national park had high perception of Ciremai national existance. They argue that the mountain Ciremai national parks useful in life and the management of mountain Ciremai national parks better. Based on the scoring of 90 respondents 70 of them have a highperception of the forest fire control in mountain Ciremai national park, it means that most of people have participated in efforts to control forest fire.Key words: Forest fire,community role, forest fire control

Diversity of biological resources in primary forest is not only limited to the woody plant species, but also covered by underground plant which has diverse species high diversity. This underground plant as one part of the forest ecosystem is a plant that has potential as a medicine. The study aims to conduct an inventory of underground plant species in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park West Java Province. The method for inventory used spasial analysis with land management unit and multi stage sampling. The spasial analysis used three categories, first the zonation map, second the soil characterization map and the third altitude map. The LMU consist of 6 areas with total plot number 60. The results showed there are 83 species underground plant consist of 45 family. The family consist of Acanthaceae, Annonaceae, Apiaceae, Apocynaceae, Araceae, Araliaceae, Aspleniaceae, Asteraceae, Balsaminaceae, Begoniaceae, Compositae, Convolvulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Cyperaceae, Elaeagnaceae, Equisetaceae, Fabaceae, Gesneriaceae, Gramineae, Hypoxidaceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, Marattiaceae, Melastomataceae, Menispermaceae, Moraceae, Musaceae, Myrsinaceae, Oxalidaceae, Passifloraceae, Piperaceae, Plantaginaceae, Polygalaceae, Primulaceae, Rosaceae, Rubiaceae, Sellagineaeeae, Smilaceae, Solanaceae, Symplocaceae, Urticaceae, Verbenaceae, Woodsiaceae, Zingiberaceae. AbstractSubmitted Manuscript 2016. Territorial animals share a variety of common resources, which can be a major driver of conspecific encounter rates. We examine how changes in resource availability influence the rate of encounters among individuals in a consumer population by implementing a spatially explicit model for resource visitation behavior by consumers. Using data from 2009 and 2010 in Etosha National Park, we verify our model's prediction that there is a saturation effect in the expected number of jackals that visit a given carcass site as carcasses become abundant. However, this does not directly imply that the overall resource-driven encounter rate among jackals decreases. This is because the increase in available carcasses is accompanied by an increase in the number of jackals that detect and potentially visit carcasses. Using simulations and mathematical analysis of our consumer-resource interaction model, we characterize key features of the relationship between resource-driven encounter rate and model parameters. These results are used to investigate a standing hypothesis that the outbreak of a fatal disease among zebras can potentially lead to an outbreak of an entirely different disease in the jackal population, a process we refer to as indirect induction of disease.

The occurrence of forest fires in the Muddus National Park (area, 50 000 ha), just north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, was investigated on 75 separate sample plots. Between 1413 and the present, evidence of 47 fire years was obtained by dating the fire scars on living Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris), the oldest of which had germinated in 1274. The fire traces found on the sample plots were fire scars on living or dead trees or charcoal fragments in the humus layer. Plots lacking all traces of former forest fires were mainly those situated on sites surrounded by extensive mires. Forest fires were shown to have occurred in the five different types of forest investigated. The commonest frequencies of fires in the pine forests occurred with the interval 81–90 years, while the mean frequency was 110 years. The mean interval of time elapsed since the last forest fire occurred in the pine forests was 144 years. Some of the major fire years in the Muddus area coincide with forest fires in other parts of northern Sweden, in the taiga of western Russia, and in central Siberia.

AbstractA survey of diurnal primate populations was carried out in Odzala National Park, Republic of the Congo, over 3 months in 1994 and 2 months in 1995. The park contains a high diversity and species-specific abundance of primates, and has the highest number of diurnal primates (10 species) in the forest block of Central Africa. Eight species of monkey: greater whitenosed monkey Cercopithecus nictitans, moustached monkey Cercopithecus cephus, crowned guenon Cercopithecus pogonias, De Brazza's monkey Cercopithecus neglectus, talapoin Miopithecus talapoin, white-cheeked mangabey Cercocebus albigena, agile mangabey Cercocebus galeritus and guereza Colobus guereza, as well as gorilla Gorilla g. gorilla and chimpanzee Pan t. troglodytes were sighted in the survey. Monkey species richness was highest in dense inundated forest and thicket, with all eight species occurring in these habitats, whereas only four species were found in terra firma forest (consisting of the park's two main habitats, open-canopy Marantaceae forest and closed-canopy primary forest). Three of the four species (C. nictitans, C. cephus and C. albigena) present in terra firma forest were most abundant in closed-canopy primary forest (1.4,1.0 and 0.6 groups per km, respectively) while the fourth (C. pogonias) was most abundant in open-canopy Marantaceae forest. Gorilla nests were most abundant in open-canopy Marantaceae forest (12.1 nests per km), while chimpanzee nests were mostly found in closed-canopy primary forest and Marantaceae forest (14 and 12 nests per km, respectively). Odzala has the highest recorded densities of western lowland gorilla (mean = 5.4 individuals per sq km) and chimpanzee (mean = 2.2 individuals per sq km) in Central Africa. The high densities of gorillas and chimpanzees may be a result of the high productivity of the forest and low poaching pressure. Conservation measures to ensure the maintenance of conditions in the area, such as educational programmes, are suggested.
