AbstractThis letter reflects on my collaborations with Nick Martin over the past 18 years. Working together we have applied twin-family and statistical genetics methods to examine the genetic architecture and identify genetic variants influencing a range of physical, psychological and social traits. The common thread across much of this work has been the empirical questions: Why are we the way we are and how can this knowledge help us when things go wrong?

It is curious that the unprecedented agitations in support of the rights of Caroline of Brunswick in 1820–21 have been represented as an “affair.” The word seems first to have been used by G. M. Trevelyan and was promptly seized on by Elie Halevy in his 1923 Histoire du peuple anglais au XIXe siècle. The labeling of this popular ebullience as an “affair” has consequently framed the development of its now not inconsiderable historiography. The episode was initially explained as a diversion from some main line of historical development, be it whiggish or Marxisant. More recently, historians have rescued the agitations from this condescension by showing how the radicals identified the king and the government's treatment of the queen as oppression and corruption at work. Since the common thread running through both whig and Marxisant accounts had been a concentration on the effects of the agitations on reform and radical politics, those attempting to put the episode back fully into their narratives emphasized the same factors. This time, however, it was to show that the agitations were not a diversion from the main line of reform politics. What follows is a further contribution to the process of giving greater attention to the queen's cause when telling the story of mass politics in this period, but one which concentrates on other neglected contexts and phenomena important for the explanation of this popular explosion. In the light of this, it may be necessary to change the way we refer to this episode.

It gives us great pleasure to present the 23rd issue of the magazine as a heterogeneous collection that brings together selected articles submitted in response to three different calls for contributions. On the one hand, we bring the volume focusing on media archaeology to a close with this second series of texts. The section on Digital Humanities also comprises an interesting series of contributions related to the 3rd Congress of the International Society of Hispanic Digital Humanities. The last section of this issue brings together another set of articles submitted in response to the magazine’s regular call for contributions, including different perspectives on issues that fall within the magazine’s scope of interest. All the sections and research contained here are unavoidably disparate from each other, yet, when taken as a whole, the reader will realise that there is a common thread throughout this issue, focusing on the impact of certain technologies have had on the way we view the past. The historical scope of technologies does not only operate in a single direction, but rather throughout time in its entirety.

Abstract The massive adoption of wireless technologies over the past decades has also brought about disputes regarding the interpretation of FRAND in the context of actual commercial relations. Courts in several jurisdictions worldwide ‒ in the EU, the US, China, India and Korea, among others ‒ have been called upon to flesh out FRAND terms or to assess conformity with FRAND principles. This body of case law provides rich insights into the workings of the markets for standards, but also practical guidance for parties as well as policymakers seeking a better understanding of the situation ‒ business and legal ‒ on the ground. The present article outlines some of the emerging patterns in SEP litigation worldwide, focusing on the judicial determination of FRAND rates. The common thread across jurisdictions regarding FRAND-rate determination is reliance on evidence and data in comparable licensing agreements. It is argued that comparable licensing agreements, i.e. licensing agreements signed with similarly situated parties, provide for the most reliable evidence on how markets price standardised technologies and SEPs.

A principal objective of Malthus, Ricardo, and Marx was to discover the laws that regulate and limit the growth of the wealth of nations and, in particular, the unprecedented growth of capitalism. The central theme of this paper is that their productive and unproductive labor concepts are critical to understanding their analyses of capitalist growth and the tendency for the rate of profit to fall which regulates and limits this growth. The way in which they identify productive and unproductive labor and how they apply this distinction is critical to understanding the common thread that runs through and marks the differences between them.

Rather than argue for or against some particular realistic position, I shall be concerned with possible coherent positions, their strengths and weaknesses. I shall also discuss related but different aspects of these problems. The terms in the title are the common thread that connects the various sections.

The present paper reviews the areas where Augmented Reality (AR) has been used in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) (Artificial Neural Networks). The focus on systems based on AR is largely on enhancing technologies in diverse application areas such as; defense, robotics, medical, manufacturing, education, entertainment, assisted driving, maintenance and mobile assistance. However, AR is now finding much usage in ANN. The research considered a review based methodology wherein most studies conducted in the past on AR and ANN were reviewed. AR with ANN has profound applications in various sectors and has been developed in an extended way but still has some distance to go afore industries, the military and the common public will receive it as a accustomed user interface. AR would modernize the way people animate and the way industries endeavor by effective utilization. There is an incredible potential in fields such as construction, art, architecture, repair and manufacturing with mediated reality and well-organized visualization through AR.

In the OC, teachers, parents, and administrators continually try to articulate the overarching principles of learning as a community that guide our everyday practices and underlie natural variations across individuals and classrooms. The principles are enacted in varying ways in the specific practices across classrooms, as variations on the theme that makes up the common thread of the philosophy. The everyday practices that support the philosophy vary according to teacher style and experience, classroom grade levels, and the unique interests and needs of members of the classroom community. For example, some years different teachers experiment with the schedules in their classrooms, arranging all literacy activities in one time block or encouraging varying types of activities within any time block. But such variations in everyday practices are still built around the philosophical principle of purposeful learning activities, as all classrooms support literacy learning with classic and current children's literature that is of interest in their class. The specific types of activities vary across the grade levels to adapt to the interests and growing skills of the students. Teachers and parents continually examine how everyday practices in the different classrooms fit with the OC philosophy. The common principles that tie our classes together not only provide coherence to the way we do things but also underlie many of the issues with which we continue to struggle in philosophical discussions. That is natural, since a community of learners is a work in progress. The common philosophy has developed from and is understood by working together and having innumerable discussions about the way we do things. The variations in practices still must remain true to the core principles in order for the school to remain a coherent community of learners. On occasion, differences in interpretation of the philosophy by particular individuals have been great enough to raise concern. At such times, the teachers observe and reflect to come to consensus on how to support the learning of the people involved. With this process, people usually come to understand and embrace the philosophy; sometimes they realize that another learning situation would be more appropriate for them.

The purpose of this article is to present an outlook on current publishing models and the way they relate to each other. The first part offers an overview of the traditional trade model in its present form and looks at the main alternatives, with a particular emphasis on crowdfunding. Can examples of subscription models be found from the past? Particular attention is given to the crowdfunding publisher Unbound in order to analyse how its hybrid business model fits into the field of contemporary cultural production. The final part looks at the dynamics between traditional trade publishers, Unbound, and the wider cultural ecosystem, exploring how different models can operate beyond direct competition, benefiting from each other’s presence in the market in the common quest to keep books alive.

Research assessments have been under growing scrutiny in the past few years. The way in which researchers are assessed has a tangible impact on decisions and practices in research. Yet, there is an emerging understanding that research assessments as they currently stand might hamper the quality and the integrity of research. In this chapter, we provide a narrative review of the shortcomings of current research assessments and showcase innovative actions that aim to address these. To discuss these shortcomings and actions, we target five different dimensions of research assessment. First, we discuss the content of research assessment, thereby introducing the common indicators used to assess researchers and the way these indicators are being used. Second, we address the procedure of research assessments, describing the resources needed for assessing researchers in an ever-growing research system. Third, we describe the crucial role of assessors in improving research assessments. Fourth, we present the broader environments in which researchers work, explaining that omnipresent competition and employment insecurity also need to be toned down substantially to foster high quality and high integrity research. Finally, we describe the challenge of coordinating individual actions to ensure that the problems of research assessments are addressed tangibly and sustainably.

AbstractIn April of 2011, Bio-Rad Laboratories Quality System Division (Irvine, CA, USA) hosted its third annual convocation of experts on laboratory quality in the city of Salzburg, Austria. As in the past 2 years, over 60 experts from across Europe, Israel, USA and South Africa convened to discuss contemporary issues and topics of importance to the clinical laboratory. This year’s conference had EN/ISO 15189 and accreditation as the common thread for most discussions, with topics ranging from how to meet requirements like uncertainty to knowledge gained from those already accredited. The participants were divided into five discussion working groups (WG) with assigned topics. The outcome of these discussions is the subject of this summary.
