Cracking at the fold of publication and packaging paper grades is a serious problem that can lead to rejection of product. Recent work has revealed some basic mechanisms and the influence of various parameters on the extent of crack area, but no studies are reported using coating layers with known mechanical properties, especially for double-coated systems. In this study, coating layers with different and known mechanical properties were used to characterize crack formation during folding. The coating formulations were applied on two different basis weight papers, and the coated papers were folded. The binder systems in these formulations were different combinations of a styrene-butadiene latex and mixtures of latex and starch for two different pigment volume concentrations (PVC). Both types of papers were coated with single and double layers. The folded area was scanned with a high-resolution scanner while the samples were kept at their folded angle. The scanned images were analyzed within a constant area. The crack areas were reported for different types of papers, binder system and PVC values. As PVC, starch content, and paper basis weight increased, the crack area increased. Double layer coated papers with high PVC and high starch content at the top layer had more cracks in comparison with a single layer coated paper, but when the PVC of the top layer was low, cracking area decreased. No measurable cracking was observed when the top layer was formulated with a 100% latex layer.

Приведено описание разработанной авторами методики цифровой компьютерной морфометрии семян овощных культур на основе системы анализа изображений, состоящей из планшетного сканера и программного обеспечения для автоматических измерений. В основу метода положено представление о разнокачественности семян, обусловленной генетической неоднородностью самих семенных растений, используемых в промышленном семеноводстве. Физические свойства семян (их форма и линейные размеры) – основные параметры при определении их качества. Цифровые изображения семян получены при помощи планшетного сканера HP Sсanjet 200 на базе Агрофизического НИИ с использованием серийного программного обеспечения «Argus-BIO», производства ООО «АргусСофт» (г. Санкт-Петербург). Метод состоит из подбора контрастной подложки (фона) для сканирования семян с минимальными теневыми эффектами, калибровку программного обеспечения для привязки к истинным размерным величинам, подбор параметров измерений и автоматическое распознавание цифровых сканированных изображений семян. Представлены экспериментальные данные по морфометрии экологически разнокачественных семян фасоли овощной, матрикально разнокачественных семян укропа, пастернака и лука Кристофа. Семена укропа и пастернака, собранные из разных порядков ветвления семенного растения, значительно различались по величине линейных параметров. Наиболее показательный линейный параметр семян – площадь проекции. Предложенная авторами методика цифровой морфометрии, уже использована на практике и в перспективе может быть задействована в исследованиях экологической и матрикальной разнокачественности семян овощных культур. Так, она прошла апробацию на разнокачественных семенах пяти сортов фасоли овощной (Настена, Магура, Миробела, Морена, Бажена) полученных в пяти контрастных эколого-географических условиях среды (Москва, Белгород, Ставрополь, Омск, Горки) в 2011–2012 годах. В дальнейшем методика может быть использована для улучшения качества цифровых изображений семян, изучения разнокачественности семян в том числе и для совершенствования контроля за селекционным процессом. Кроме того, она применима для изучения взаимосвязи совокупности морфометрических характеристик семян и их посевных качеств.The description of the method of digital computer morphometry of vegetable seeds developed by the authors on the basis of the image analysis system consisting of a flatbed scanner and software for automatic measurements is given. The method is based on the idea of seed quality, due to the genetic heterogeneity of the seed plants used in industrial seed production. Physical properties of seeds (their shape and linear dimensions) are the main parameters in determining their quality. Digital image of the seed obtained using the flatbed scanner, HP Sсanjet 200 on the basis of the Agrophysical research Institute with serial software “Argus-BIO”, produced by LLC “Argussoft” (Saint-Petersburg). The method consists of selection of a contrast substrate (background) for scanning seeds with minimal shadow effects, calibration of software for binding to true size values, selection of measurement parameters and automatic recognition of digital scanned images of seeds. Experimental data on the morphometry of ecologically different-quality seeds of vegetable beans, matrix seeds of dill, Pasternak and Christoph onion are presented. Seeds of dill and parsnip, collected from different orders of branching of the seed plant, significantly differed in size of linear parameters. The most revealing linear parameter seed – area projection. The method of digital morphometry proposed by the authors has already been used in practice and in the future can be used in studies of ecological and matrix heterogeneity of vegetable seeds. So, it was tested on different quality seeds of five varieties of vegetable beans (Nastena, Magura, Mirobelа, Morena, Bazhenf) obtained in five contrasting environmental and geographical conditions (Moscow, Belgorod, Stavropol, Omsk, Gorki) in 2011-2012. In the future, the technique can be used to improve the quality of digital images of seeds, study of seed diversity, including to improve the control of the breeding process. In addition, it is applicable to study the relationship of the set of morphometric characteristics of seeds and their sowing qualities.

The possibility of carrying out a meaningful forensic analysis on printed and scanned images plays a major role in many applications. First of all, printed documents are often associated with criminal activities, such as terrorist plans, child pornography, and even fake packages. Additionally, printing and scanning can be used to hide the traces of image manipulation or the synthetic nature of images, since the artifacts commonly found in manipulated and synthetic images are gone after the images are printed and scanned. A problem hindering research in this area is the lack of large scale reference datasets to be used for algorithm development and benchmarking. Motivated by this issue, we present a new dataset composed of a large number of synthetic and natural printed face images. To highlight the difficulties associated with the analysis of the images of the dataset, we carried out an extensive set of experiments comparing several printer attribution methods. We also verified that state-of-the-art methods to distinguish natural and synthetic face images fail when applied to print and scanned images. We envision that the availability of the new dataset and the preliminary experiments we carried out will motivate and facilitate further research in this area.

AbstractThis study explores the magnitude of two sources of error that are introduced when extracorporeal bullet trajectories are based on post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) and/or surface scanning of a body. The first source of error is caused by an altered gravitational pull on soft tissue, which is introduced when a body is scanned in another position than it had when hit. The second source of error is introduced when scanned images are translated into a virtual representation of the victim’s body. To study the combined magnitude of these errors, virtual shooting trajectories with known vertical angles through five “victims” (live test persons) were simulated. The positions of the simulated wounds on the bodies were marked, with the victims in upright positions. Next, the victims were scanned in supine position, using 3D surface scanning, similar to a body’s position when scanned during a PMCT. Seven experts, used to working with 3D data, were asked to determine the bullet trajectories based on the virtual representations of the bodies. The errors between the known and determined trajectories were analysed and discussed. The results of this study give a feel for the magnitude of the introduced errors and can be used to reconstruct actual shooting incidents using PMCT data.

Non-taster is a photo essay exploring the elusive connections between the change of taste and the immigrant experience based on my story of losing taste at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. The world, which used to be dirty, viscous, and alive has rapidly become hygienic, distanced, and virtual. I documented the packaging and food sauce for breakfast via a series of scanned images and photographs during the second and third lockdown in London. The photos of spicy sauce and food packaging reveal the desire to reconnect with the senses. Alongside apathy, nostalgia, and homesickness, Non-taster laments the changes of the senses and desires in the post-pandemic period.

AbstractThe purpose of this work was to study the dosimetric properties of the enhanced dynamic wedge using a Seven29 ion chamber array. The PTW Seven29 ion chamber array and solid water phantoms were used for the study. Primarily, the solid water phantoms with the two-dimensional (2D) array were scanned using a computed tomography scanner at different depths. Using these scanned images, planning was performed for different wedge angles at 6 and 15 MV. A dose of 100 CGy was delivered in each case. For each delivery, the required monitoring units (MUs) were calculated. Using the same setup with a Varian Clinac iX, the calculated MU was delivered for different wedge angles. Subsequently, the different wedged dose distributions that had been obtained were analysed using Verisoft software. A shoulder-like region was observed in the profile; this region reduced as depth increased. The percentage deviation between the planned and measured doses at the shoulder region fell within the range of 0·9–4·3%. The standard deviation between planned and measured doses at shoulder region in the profile fell within 0·08±0·02 at different depths. The standard deviations between planned and measured wedge factors for different depths (2·5, 5, 10 and 15 cm) were 0·0021, 0·0007, 0·0050 and 0·0001 for 6 MV and 0·0024, 0·0191, 0·0013 and 0·0005 for 15 MV, respectively. On the basis of the studies that we performed, it can be concluded that the 2D ion chamber array is a good tool for enhanced dynamic wedge dosimetry.

Introduction. An engineering method is proposed for assessing salt formation on the surface of cement composites exposed to adverse operating conditions. The technique is based on the histogram method used to determine the dominant brightness of the half-tone image of scanned cement composites. The criterion for ranking composites is a relative dimensionless value –– a metric obtained by comparing the brightness of a grayscale image with the brightness level of white. Materials and methods. We selected three types of compositions of composites in the amount of 21 items; each of them contains three samples –– a control sample and samples exposed to high humidity and positive temperatures for 15 and 45 days. Each composition is represented by a scanned raster image of the sample surface. The images are further subjected to digital processing using a software program written in the C++ programming language and the OpenCV technical vision library. This allows you to use the available methods and classes to develop algorithms to solve the problem in question and to convert a full-color RGB image to a grayscale image. Such images are used to analyze histograms, which determine the dominant level of brightness to determine the numerical metric for quantifying the salt formation on the surface of cement composite samples on the basis of their scanned images. Results. A description of the software algorithm, used to detect salt formation on the surface of cement composite specimens that have passed performance tests under high humidity conditions at positive temperatures, is presented. The method of ranking cement composite samples using the values of their dominant brightness relative to the brightness of control samples is shown. The comparative analysis of the study is presented in the form of numerical data and explanatory diagrams. Conclusions. Software modeling is employed to demonstrate the expediency of the methodology for the assessment of salt formation on the surface of cement composites and other building materials prone to salt formation.

This paper proposes a smart algorithm for image processing by means of recognition of text, extraction of information and vocalization for the visually challenged. The system uses LattePanda Alpha system on board that processes the scanned images. The image is categorized into its equivalent alphanumeric characters following pre-processing, segmentation, extraction of features and post-processing of the scanned or image based information. Further, a text to speech synthesizer is used for vocalization processed content. In converting handwritten scripts, the system offers an accuracy of 97% in conversion. This also depends on the legibility of the data. The time delay for the entire conversion process is also analysed and the efficiency of the system is estimated.
