Two new ceramides have been isolated from Tanacetum artemisioides, besides the known constituents β -sitosterol and β -sitosterol glycoside. The structure elucidation of the isolated new compounds was based primarily on 1D and 2D NMR analysis, including COSY, HMQC, HMBC correlations. The compound 1 and 2 showed inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase

Two new compounds, named as sacric acid A (1) and sacric acid B (2), were isolated from the EtOAc extract of Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb. This is the first report on the structure elucidation of these compounds based on UV, IR, and extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic, and ESI-MS techniques.

The chemical examination of the marine soft coral Lemnalia sp., collected at the Xisha islands in the South China Sea, resulted in the isolation of four new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely clavukoellians G–J (1–4), and one new aristolane sesquiterpene, namely clavukoellian K (5), together with five known compounds, 6–10. The structure elucidation of the isolated natural products was based on various spectroscopic techniques including HRESIMS and NMR, while their absolute configurations were resolved on the basis of comparisons of the ECD spectra with the calculated ECD data. The isolated new compounds 1–5 were evaluated for their anti- and pro- angiogenesis activities in a transgenic fluorescent zebrafish (Tg(vegfr2:GFP)) model. Quantitative analysis revealed that compound 5 displayed pro-angiogenesis activity in a PTK787-induced vascular injury zebrafish model at 2.5 μM. Data showed that compound 5 significantly promoted the angiogenesis in a dose-dependent manner.

Two new compounds, maclurin A (1) and maclurin B (2), and six known ones, ononin (3), pterofuran (4), osajin (5), pomiferin (6), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (7), and 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzoic acid (8) were isolated from the fruit of Maclura pomifera. Compounds 3 and 4 were isolated from the genus for the first time. Structure elucidation was achieved by spectroscopic measurements and by comparison with literature data. Compounds 2-4 exhibited activities against the cancer cell lines A549 and Panc-28 with GI50 values from 18.1 to 32.2, and 20.6 to 43.5 μM, respectively. Compounds 2 and 4 also showed cytotoxicity against HCT 116 with GI50 values of 47.2 and 24.4 μM, respectively.

This study describes the isolation and structure elucidation of several known and 13 new compounds from New Zealand marine organisms. Furthermore, it describes the development of a digital mask program for the analysis of HSQC spectra of crude sponge extracts. This was used as a screening tool to identify secondary metabolite producers that warranted further analysis. As reports of metabolites from New Zealand nudibranchs are poorly represented in the literature, a study of five New Zealand nudibranch species was undertaken. These coloured and seemingly undefended nudibranchs are known to concentrate or sequester toxic metabolites from their prey, facilitating rapid isolation and structure elucidation of these metabolites. This study resulted in the isolation of a variety of metabolite classes; two new compounds, 13alpha- acetoxypukalide diol (30) and lopholide diol (31) from the nudibranch Tritonia incerta, are described. Examination of the sponge Raspailia agminata resulted in the isolation of a novel family of partially acetylated glycolipids which contain up to six glucose residues. The chromatographic separation of these compounds was a challenge due to the similarity of the congeners and their lack of a chromophore. MSguided isolation eventually led to the purification of agminosides A-E (145-149). An unidentified sponge of the order Dictyoceratida was found to contain a new isomer (186) of the known sesterterpene variabilin. As variabilin-type compounds are predominantly found from sponges of the family Irciniidae, the unidentified sponge is most likely an irciniid. In addition, the sponge contained two prenylated quinones, one of which, 189, is a new isomer of a known sponge metabolite. The sponge Darwinella oxeata contained four new nitrogenous diterpenes of the aplysulphurane (rearranged spongian) skeleton, oxeatamide A (214), isooxeatamide A (215), oxeatamide A 23-methyl ester (216) and oxeatamide B (217).

Abstract Some useful methods for the preparation of chlorobiphenylols have been investigated. Twenty monohydroxy and dihydroxy derivatives of chlorobiphenyls are described; 10 are new compounds and several are known metabolic products from animals or microorganisms. The relationship between structure of the chlorobiphenylols and gas chromatographic retention time as well as electron capture detector response, including those of derivatives, has been examined. The ultraviolet, fluorescence, and mass spectra of these hydroxylated derivatives have also been examined with a view towards analysis and structure elucidation of metabolites.

Aeromonas veronii strain A134 was isolated from Microcystis aeruginosa colonies collected from Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), Israel. The Aeromonas culture media inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa (strain MGK). The crude extract of a large-scale culture of A. veronii A134 was separated in a few chromatographic steps to yield three new secondary metabolites, 9-chlorolumichrome (1), veronimide (2) and veronipyrazine (3), along with a known lumichrome and several known diketopiperazines. The structures of the new compounds were established by analyses of the data from 1D and 2D NMR experiments and HRMS data of the compounds, as well as a single-crystal X-ray analysis of synthetic 1. The structure elucidation and proposed biogenesis of the new compounds are described below.

From Bartramia pomiformis bartramic-acid (luteolin-8,2′′-protocatechuic acid), bartramiatriluteolin, the first triflavone and six known biflavonoids (bartramiaflavone, anhydrobartramiaflavone, 2,3-dihydrophilonotisflavone, philonotisflavone, dicranolomin and 5′,3′′′-dihydroxyamentoflavone) could be isolated. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated spectroscopically.
