AbstractA solenoid magnetic field plays an important role in a non-line-of-sight azimuth transmission system based on polarization-maintaining fiber, which is directly related to the transmission accuracy of azimuth information. This research mainly studies the factors that affect the solenoid magnetic field according to the modulation signal from the direct current to the alternating current, as well as the hollow solenoid. First, the magnetic field components of the static solenoid are derived from the Biot–Savart law by using the uniform cylindrical current equivalent model. Then, the magnetic field of the near axial region is studied from the axial and radial directions, and the feasibility of calculating the magnetic field of the multi-layer solenoid with the superposition principle is verified by measuring the magnetic field of each position on the axis of the solenoid with a Gauss meter. Finally, the alternating electromagnetic field model is established using Maxwell’s equations, and the magnetic and electric fields of the hollow solenoid are further solved. The results show that the magnetic field in the middle part of the magneto-optic glass is more stable, and the magnetic collecting ability of the solenoid is stronger. The magnetic field intensity at the center of the magneto-optic modulation solenoid of the system is the largest, and it decreases with the distance from the center. The alternating electromagnetic field is closely related to frequency. The results provide a reference for the study of the azimuth accuracy of a non-line-of-sight azimuth transmission system.

AbstractBroadband linear polarization in the spectra of Ap stars is believed to be due to differential saturation between σ and π Zeeman components in spectral lines. This mechanism has been known for a long time to be the main agent of a similar phenomenon observed in sunspots. Since this phenomenon has been carefully calibrated in the solar case, it can be confidently used to deduce the magnetic field of Ap stars.Given the magnetic configuration of a rotating star, it is possible to deduce the broadband polarization at any phase. Calculations performed for the oblique dipole model show that the resulting polarization diagrams are very sensitive to the values of i (the angle between the rotation axis and the line of sight) and β (the angle between the rotation and magnetic axes). The dependence on i and β is such that the four-fold ambiguity typical of the circular polarization observations ((i,β), (β,i), (π-i,π-β), (π-β,π-i)) can be removed.

Smart and interactive textiles have been attracted great attention in recent years. This research explored three different techniques and processes in developing textile-based conductive coils that are able to embed in a garment layer. Coils made through embroidery and screen printing have good dimensional stability, although the resistance of screen printed coil is too high due to the low conductivity of the print ink. Laser cut coil provided the best electrical conductivity; however, the disadvantage of this method is that it is very difficult to keep the completed coil to the predetermined shape and dimension. The tested results show that an electromagnetic field has been generated between the textile-based conductive coil and an external coil that is directly powered by electricity. The magnetic field and electric field worked simultaneously to complete the wireless charging process.

Abstract Focusing on the problem that the polarization aberration caused by the non-normal incidence of the polarized beam affects the accuracy of the azimuth transmission during the fiber coupling process of the non-line-of-sight azimuth transmission system, this paper starts from the principle of non-line-of-sightazimuth transmission. The polarization aberration relation of the lens-fiber combined interface is established based on the Fresnel formulafor the attenuation difference between the horizontal and vertical electric vectors. Further, the azimuth solution model affected by polarization aberration is established. Numerical simulation results show that in non-normal incidence, no polarization aberration will occur when the polarization angle between the incident ray and incident surface is 0° or 90°. Otherwise, the polarization aberration changes toward the incident surface, and the azimuth transmission error will increase with the increase of the polarization aberration. Last, the optimization measures are proposed. This is of great significancefor further improvement of the azimuth transmission system based on polarization-maintaining fibers, the selection of the instrument, and the improvement of the system measurement accuracy.

It has not been shown so far whether the diffuse Galactic polarized emission at frequencies relevant for cosmic microwave background (CMB) studies originates from nearby or more distant regions of our Galaxy. This questions previous attempts that have been made to constrain magnetic field models at local and large scales. The scope of this work is to investigate and quantify the contribution of the dusty and magnetized local interstellar medium to the observed emission that is polarized by thermal dust. We used stars as distance candles and probed the line-of-sight submillimeter polarization properties by comparing the emission that is polarized by thermal dust at submillimeter wavelengths and the optical polarization caused by starlight. We provide statistically robust evidence that at high Galactic latitudes (|b| ≥ 60°), the 353 GHz polarized sky as observed by Planck is dominated by a close-by magnetized structure that extends between 200 and 300 pc and coincides with the shell of the Local Bubble. Our result will assist modeling the magnetic field of the Local Bubble and characterizing the CMB Galactic foregrounds.

The Biot-Savart law gives the velocity associated with an elemental portion of line vortex, or the magnetic field associated with an elemental portion of line current. The following proof may appeal to students who approach fluid mechanics or electromagnetic-field theory from the engineering viewpoint. It will be stated in terms of fluid mechanics. Consider a very small length δs of line vortex of circulation strength Γ. At P(x) the velocity δV associated with this portion depends on Γ δs and x.

In this paper, the effects of the quantum yield of free radicals in cryptochrome exposed to different electromagnetic fields were studied through the quantum biology. The results showed that the spikes characteristics was produced in the free radicals in cryptochrome, when it exposed to the applied magnetic field (ω = 50 Hz, B0 = 50 μT). The spikes produced by the electromagnetic field was independent of the changes of polar θ. When the frequency of the magnetic field increased, the spikes characteristics produced in unit time also increased. These results showed that the environmental electromagnetic field could affect the response of organisms to the geomagnetic field by influencing the quantum yield in the mechanism of free radical pair.It provided a basis for studying the influence of environmental electromagnetic field on biology, especially the navigation of biological magnetism.

In this study, we investigate in detail the photospheric magnetic structure of 98 coronal holes using line-of-sight magnetograms of SDO/HMI, and for a subset of 42 coronal holes using HINODE/SOT G-band filtergrams. We divided the magnetic field maps into magnetic elements and quiet coronal hole regions by applying a threshold at ±25 G. We find that the number of magnetic bright points in magnetic elements is well correlated with the area of the magnetic elements (cc = 0.83 ± 0.01). Further, the magnetic flux of the individual magnetic elements inside coronal holes is related to their area by a power law with an exponent of 1.261 ± 0.004 (cc = 0.984 ± 0.001). Relating the magnetic elements to the overall structure of coronal holes, we find that on average (69 ± 8)% of the overall unbalanced magnetic flux of the coronal holes arises from long-lived magnetic elements with lifetimes > 40 h. About (22 ± 4)% of the unbalanced magnetic flux arises from a very weak background magnetic field in the quiet coronal hole regions with a mean magnetic field density of about 0.2−1.2 G. This background magnetic field is correlated to the flux of the magnetic elements with lifetimes of > 40 h (cc = 0.88 ± 0.02). The remaining flux arises from magnetic elements with lifetimes < 40 h. By relating the properties of the magnetic elements to the overall properties of the coronal holes, we find that the unbalanced magnetic flux of the coronal holes is completely determined by the total area that the long-lived magnetic elements cover (cc = 0.994 ± 0.001).
