AbstractIn the present work, the forced convection of nanofluid flow in a microchannel containing rotating cylinders is investigated in different geometries. The heat flux applied to the microchannel wall is 10,000 W m−2. The effects of Reynolds number, the volume fraction of nanoparticles, and the porosity percentage of the porous medium are investigated on the flow fields, temperature, and heat transfer rate. Reynolds number values vary from Re = 250–1000, non-dimensional rotational velocities 1 and 2, respectively, and volume fraction of nanoparticles 0–2%. The results show that increasing the velocity of rotating cylinders increases the heat transfer; also, increasing the Reynolds number and volume fraction of nanoparticles increases the heat transfer, pressure drop, and Cf,ave. By comparing the porosity percentages with each other, it is concluded that due to the greater contact of the nanofluid with the porous medium and the creation of higher velocity gradients, the porosity percentage is 45% and the values of are 90% higher than the porosity percentage. Comparing porosity percentages with each other, at porosity percentage 90% is greater than at porosity percentage 45%. On the other hand, increasing the Reynolds number reduces the entropy generation due to heat transfer and increases the entropy generation due to friction. Increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles increases the entropy generations due to heat transfer and friction.

Abstract This paper analyses the augmentation entropy generation number for a viscous nanofluid flow over a non-isothermal wedge including the effects of non-linear radiation and activation energy. We discuss the influence of thermodynamically important parameters during the study, namely, the Bejan number, entropy generation number, and the augmentation entropy generation number. The mathematical formulation for thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid for Al2O3 − EG mixture has been considered. The results were numerically computed using implicit Keller-Box method and depicted graphically. The important result is the change in augmentation entropy generation number with Reynolds number. We observed that adding nanoparticles (volume fraction) tend to enhance augmentation entropy generation number for Al2O3 − EG nanofluid. Further, the investigation on the thermodynamic performance of non-isothermal nanofluid flow over a wedge reveals that adding nanoparticles to the base fluid is effective only when the contribution of heat transfer irreversibility is more than fluid friction irreversibility. This work also discusses the physical interpretation of heat transfer irreversibility and pressure drop irreversibility. This dependency includes Reynolds number and volume fraction parameter. Other than these, the research looked at a variety of physical characteristics associated with the flow of fluid, heat and mass transfer.

In this paper, the effect of non-uniform heating on the conjugate thermal and hydraulic characteristics for Al2O3–water nanofluid flow through a converging duct is examined numerically. An Eulerian–Lagrangian model is employed to simulate the two-phase flow for the following range of parameters: Reynolds number (100 ≤ Re ≤ 800), nanoparticle volume fraction (0% ≤  ϕ ≤ 5%) and amplitude of the sinusoidal heat flux ( A = 0, 0.5 and 1). The results reveal a similar affinity between the applied heat flux and local Nusselt number variation qualitatively, mainly at the middle of the duct. The results also indicate that there is a considerable enhancement of Nusselt number with the increase in Reynolds number and the thermal conductivity of wall materials. In addition, increasing the particle loading contributes to an enhanced rate of heat transfer. The heat transfer rate is lower for non-uniform heating when compared with the constant heat flux and the same can be compensated by the application of volume fraction of nanoparticles

A typical vapor condensation condenser consists of two major heat transfer processes, i.e., vapor condensation and forced convection. In order to enhance heat transfer, the condensation heat transfer utilizing the porous medium is investigated, and at the same time, the elliptical pin fin effect on the forced convection of nanofluid studied. The forced convective heat transfer on nanofluids in an elliptical pin-fin heat sink of two different pin orientations is numerically studied by using a finite volume method. With increasing Reynolds number, the recirculation zones behind the pins increased. There were more recirculation zones for the pins with different angular orientations than for pins with the same angular orientation. It is observed that the Nusselt number for the pins with different angular orientations was higher than that for pins with the same angular orientation. The results show that with increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles and angular orientation of pins for a given Reynolds number, Euler and Nusselt numbers as well as overall heat transfer efficiency increase. The non dimensional mass, momentum and energy equations based on non dimensional pressure, temperature, heat capacity, capillary, and bond numbers are developed for the vapor condensation occurring in the porous medium. The volumetric viscous force for the flow is described by Darcy's law. For the microscopic interfacial shear stress, a permeability term that relates flow rate and fluid physical properties (i.e. viscosity) to pressure gradient K[subscript l]=[mu][subscript l]/[subscript l]p[superscript l] is implemented. The effects of permeability, porosity, and effective pore radius parameters on porous medium performance are introduced. The occurrence of thin liquid film inside pores is addressed and the Laplace-Young equation is depicted. In calculations the Darcy-Ergun momentum relation is implemented which provide accurate means to determine the capillary performance parameters of porous medium. The dimensionless thicknesses of the two-phase and liquid regions and embodiment of unique characteristics based on the total thermal diffusivity and absolute permeability are depicted. Therefore, analyses of the phase change and two-phase flow are made by defining regions, over which appropriate approximations are made.

AbstractA numerical study on heat transfer and entropy generation in natural convection of non-Newtonian nanofluid flow has been explored within a differentially heated two-dimensional wavy porous cavity. In the present study, copper (Cu)–water nanofluid is considered for the investigation where the specific behavior of Cu nanoparticles in water is considered to behave as non-Newtonian based on previously established experimental results. The power-law model and the Brinkman-extended Darcy model has been used to characterize the non-Newtonian porous medium. The governing equations of the flow are solved using the finite volume method with the collocated grid arrangement. Numerical results are presented through streamlines, isotherms, local Nusselt number and entropy generation rate to study the effects of a range of Darcy number (Da), volume fractions (ϕ) of nanofluids, Rayleigh numbers (Ra), and the power-law index (n). Results show that the rate of heat transfer from the wavy wall to the medium becomes enhanced by decreasing the power-law index but increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles. Increase of porosity level and buoyancy forces of the medium augments flow strength and results in a thinner boundary layer within the cavity. At negligible porosity level of the enclosure, effect of volume fraction of nanoparticles over thermal conductivity of the nanofluids is imperceptible. Interestingly, when the Darcy–Rayleigh number $$Ra^*\gg 10$$ R a ∗ ≫ 10 , the power-law effect becomes more significant than the volume fraction effect in the augmentation of the convective heat transfer process. The local entropy generation is highly dominated by heat transfer irreversibility within the porous enclosure for all conditions of the flow medium. The particular wavy shape of the cavity strongly influences the heat transfer flow pattern and local entropy generation. Interestingly, contour graphs of local entropy generation and local Bejan number show a rotationally symmetric pattern of order two about the center of the wavy cavity.

The excellent thermal characteristics of nanoparticles have increased their application in the field of heat transfer. In this paper, a thermophysical and geometrical parameter study is performed to minimize the total entropy generation of the viscoelastic flow of nanofluid. Entropy generation with respect to volume fraction (<0.04), the Reynolds number (20,000–100,000), and the diameter of the microchannel (20–20,000 μm) with the circular cross-section under constant flux are calculated. As is shown, most of the entropy generation owes to heat transfer and by increasing the diameter of the channel, the Bejan number increases. The contribution of heat entropy generation in the microchannel is very poor and the major influence of entropy generation is attributable to friction. The maximum quantity of in-channel entropy generation happens in nanofluids with TiO2, CuO, Cu, and Ag nanoparticles, in turn, despite the fact in the microchannel this behavior is inverted, the minimum entropy generation occurs in nanofluids with CuO, Cu, Ag, and TiO2 nanoparticles, in turn. In the channel and microchannel for all nanofluids except water-TiO2, increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles decreases entropy generation. In the channel and microchannel the total entropy generation increases by augmentation the Reynolds number.

In this study, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed in order to examine the fluid flow and forced convection heat transfer inside a two-dimensional horizontal channel with and without obstacles. In order to enhance the heat and thermal energy transfer within the channel, different obstacle arrangements are posed to the flow field and heat transfer with the purpose of studying their sensitivity to these changes. The results indicate that, when the value of the Reynolds number is maximum, the maximum average Nusselt numbers happens on the lower wall (Case 4). The paper extends the topic to the use of nanofluids to introduce a possibility to enhancement of the heat transfer in the channel with an array of the obstacles with forced convection. For this purpose, the AgMgO/water micropolar hybrid nanofluid is used, and the volume fraction of the nanoparticle (50% Ag and 50% MgO by volume) is set between 0 and 0.02. The results showed that, when the hybrid nanofluid is used instead of a typical nanofluid, the rate of the heat transfer inside the channel increases, especially for the high values of the Reynolds number, and the volume fraction of the nanoparticles. Increasing the volume fraction of the nanoparticles increase the local Nusselt number ( 1.17-fold). It is shown that the type of obstacle arrangement and the specific nanofluid can exerts significant effects on the characteristics of the flow field and heat transfer in the channel. This study provides a platform for using the LBM to examine fluid flow through discrete obstacles in offset positions.

Laminar forced convection of a nanofluid consisting of water and Al2O3 in a horizontal annulus has been studied numerically. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate thermal behaviors of the nanofluid over constant temperature thermal boundary condition and with different volume concentration of nanoparticles. Comparisons with previously published experimental and analytical works on flow behavior in horizontal annulus show good agreements between the results as volume fraction is zero. In general convective heat transfer coefficient increases with nanoparticle concentration. ABSTRAK: Kertaskerja ini mengkaji secara numerik olakan paksa bendalir lamina yang menganduangi air dan Al2O3 didalam anulus mendatar. Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze heat transfer and entropy generation of a Cu-water nanofluid in a vertical channel. The channel walls are maintained at a hot temperature Tw. An up flow penetrates the channel at a uniform velocity v0 and a cold temperature T0 (T0 < Tw). The effects of Reynolds number Re, Grashof number Gr and solid volume fraction ϕ on streamlines, isotherms, entropy generation, friction factor, local and mean Nusselt numbers are evaluated. Design/methodology/approach The Cu-water nanofluid is used in this study. The software Ansys-fluent 14.5, based on the finite-volume method and SIMPLE algorithm, is used to simulate the mixed convection problem with entropy generation in a vertical channel. Findings The results show that the increase of Reynolds and Grashof numbers and solid volume fraction improves heat transfer and reduces entropy generation. Correlations for the mean Nusselt number and friction factor in terms of Reynolds number and solid volume fraction are obtained. The present results are compared with those found in the literature, which reveal a very good agreement. Originality/value The originality of this work is to understand the heat transfer and entropy generation for mixed convection of a Cu-water nanofluid in a vertical channel.

Purpose The Galerkin finite element method (FEM) based on the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme is applied to simulate the nanofluid flow and thermal fields inside an inclined geometry filled by a heat-generating hydrodynamically and thermally anisotropic non-Darcy porous medium using the local thermal non-equilibrium model (LTNEM). Property of the hydrodynamic anisotropy is taken in both the Forchheimer coefficient and permeability and these tools are considered as functions of inclination of the principal axes. Also, the thermal conductivity for the porous phase is assumed to be anisotropic. Design/methodology/approach The Galerkin FEM based on the CBS scheme is applied to solve the partial differential equations governing the flow and thermal fields. Findings It is noted that the net rate of the heat transfer between the nanofluid and solid phases are influenced by variations of the anisotropic properties. Also, the system is reached to the thermal equilibrium state at H > 100. Further, the maximum nanofluid temperature is reduced by 12.27% when the nanoparticles volume fraction is varied from 0% to 4%. Originality/value This paper aims to study the nanofluid flow and heat transfer characteristics inside an inclined enclosure filled with a heat-generating, hydrodynamically and thermally anisotropic porous medium using the CBS scheme. The LTNEM is considered between the nanofluid and porous phases while the local thermal equilibrium model (LTEM) between the base fluid (water) and the nanoparticles (alumina) is taken into account. The Galerkin FEM is introduced to discretize the governing system of equations. Also, examine influences of the anisotropic properties (permeability, Forchheimer terms and thermal conductivity of the porous medium), inclination angle and nanoparticles volume fraction on the net rate of the heat transfer between the nanofluid and porous phases and on the local thermal non-equilibrium state is one of the concerns of this paper.
