Intrinsic self-healing and highly stretchable electro-conductive hydrogels demonstrate wide-ranging utilization in intelligent electronic skin. Herein, we propose a new class of strain sensors prepared by cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and graphene (GN) co-incorporated poly (vinyl alcohol)-borax (GN-CNF@PVA) hydrogel. The borax can reversibly and dynamically associate with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and GN-CNF nanocomplexes as a cross-linking agent, providing a tough and flexible network with the hydrogels. CNFs act as a bio-template and dispersant to support GN to create homogeneous GN-CNF aqueous dispersion, endowing the GN-CNF@PVA gels with promoted mechanical flexibility, strength and good conductivity. The resulting composite gels have high stretchability (break-up elongation up to 1000%), excellent viscoelasticity (storage modulus up to 3.7 kPa), rapid self-healing ability (20 s) and high healing efficiency (97.7 ± 1.2%). Due to effective electric pathways provided by GN-CNF nanocomplexes, the strain sensors integrated by GN-CNF@PVA hydrogel with good responsiveness, stability and repeatability can efficiently identify and monitor the various human motions with the gauge factor (GF) of about 3.8, showing promising applications in the field of wearable sensing devices.

Aqueous nanosilica sol (particle size range: 9–13 nm, pH: 9.0) was added at various low concentration range (0.5–2 wt.%) into aqueous poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of different molecular weight (98% hydrolyzed, 20 wt.%) (pH: 5.0) at room temperature under constant stirring to synthesize organic-inorganic hybrid hydrogels in presence of sodium lauryl sulphate as a silica dispersant. Buffer tablets were added to arrest the pH at 9.0 (to prevent any silica aggregation due to change in pH). The resultant hybrids were cast on Teflon sheets and dried in an oven at 50°C to drive out all the unbound water. Those films were then subjected to freese-thaw treatment continuously for 5 h. The freese-thawed films appeared opaque. The swelling-de swelling experiments with the hydrogels were carried out in distilled water at room temperature and consequently allowed to de-swell naturally. Those observations were correlated with the microstructures of the hybrid hydrogels.

We induced a terpyridine moiety into a norbornene-based polymer to demonstrate its self-healing property, without an external stimulus, such as light, heat, or healing agent, using metal–ligand interactions. We synthesized terpyridine incorporated norbornene-based polymers using a ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The sol state of diluted polymer solutions was converted into supramolecular assembled gels, through the addition of transition metal ions (Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, and Zn2+). In particular, a supramolecular complex gel with Zn2+, which is a metal with a lower binding affinity, demonstrated fast self-healing properties, without any additional external stimuli, and its mechanical properties were completely recovered.
