A method for a droplet transportation by jumping a obstacle on piezoelectric substrate is presented, and a device for the droplet transportation is implemented on a 128° yx-LiNbO3 piezoelectric substrate. An interdigital transducer and a reflector are fabricated on the piezoelectric substrate using microelectric technology. Hydrophobic film is coated on the area free of electrodes and a polydimethylsilicone obstacle is mounted on it. A radio frequency signal amplified by a power amplifier is applied to the interdigital transducer to generate surface acoustic wave. When the surface acoustic wave meets with the droplet on the piezoelectric substrate during transportation, part of acoustic wave enegy is radiated into the droplet, leading to internal acoustic streaming. Once the radio frequency signal with appropriate amplitude is suddenly decreased, part of the droplet will jump the obstacle due to interial force. Red dye solution drops are demonstrated for transportation experiments. Results show that a droplet can be transported from one side to another of the obstacle on piezoelectric substrate by help of surface acoustic wave. The presented method is helpful for microfluidic system on a piezoelectric substrate.

Platinum (Pt) gratings on langasite (LGS) substrates are a widely used structures in high temperature surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. Multiple modes can be excited in Pt/LGS SAW devices owing to the heavy weight of the Pt electrode and leaky waves in the LGS substrate. In this work, we report on a detailed mode analysis of Pt/LGS SAW devices, where three commonly used LGS cuts are considered. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM) numerical model was developed, and the simulation and experiment results were compared. The experiment and simulation results showed that there are two modes excited in the Pt/LGS SAW devices with Euler angle (0°, 138.5°, 27°) and (0°, 138.5°, 117°), which are Rayleigh-type SAW and SH-type leaky wave, respectively. Only the Rayleigh-type mode was observed in the Pt/LGS SAW devices with Euler angle (0°, 138.5°, 72°). It was found that the acoustic velocities are dependent on the wavelength, which is attributed to the change of wave penetration depth in interdigital transducers (IDTs) and the velocity dispersion can be modulated by the thickness of the Pt electrode. We also demonstrated that addition of an Al2O3 passivation layer has no effect on the wave modes, but can increase the resonant frequencies. This paper provides a better understanding of the acoustic modes of Pt/LGS SAW devices, as well as useful guidance for device design. It is believed that the Rayleigh-type SAW and SH-type leaky waves are potentially useful for dual-mode sensing applications in harsh environments, to achieve multi-parameter monitoring or temperature-compensation on a single chip.

A series of numerical and experimental studies have been conducted to understand the mechanism of loss generation in a high speed compressor stator with inlet radial shear flow over the span. In this study, numerical simulation is extensively used to investigate the complex three-dimensional flow in the cascades and to interpret the phenomena appeared in the high speed compressor tests. It has been shown that the inlet radial shear flow generated by upstream rotor had a significant influence on the stator secondary flow, and consequently on the total pressure loss. Redesign of the stator aiming at the reduction of loss by controlling secondary flow has been carried out and the resultant performance recovery was successfully demonstrated both numerically and experimentally.

This paper suggests a large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulation method to investigate the fluorine pollution near a slag yard. The large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulation method included an experimental investigation, laboratory studies of solute transport during absorption of water by soil, and large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulations of solute transport. The experimental results showed that the concentrations of fluorine from smelting slag and construction waste soil were well over the discharge limit of 0.1 kg/m3 recommended by Chinese guidelines. The key parameters of the materials used for large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulations were determined based on an experimental investigation, laboratory studies, and soil saturation of survey results and back analyses. A large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulation of solute transport was performed, and its results were compared to the experiment results. The simulation results showed that the clay near the slag had a high saturation of approximately 0.9, consistent with the survey results. Comparison of the results showed that the results of the numerical simulation of solute transport and the test results were nearly identical, and that the numerical simulation results could be used as the basis for groundwater environmental evaluation.

Abstract:Flexible electronics and microsystems are an emerging technology with a tremedous impact to the future electronics and information technology and widespread applications. Various devices and microsystems have been developed. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are a type of essential device for electronics, microsensors and microsystems; however there is no activity on the development of flexible SAW devices yet. This paper reports the development of flexible SAW devices on cheap, bendable and disposable plastic films. Flexible SAW devices with resonant frequency of 198.1 MHz and 447 MHz for the Rayleigh and Lamb waves respectively have been obtained with a large transmission signal up to 18dB. The flexible SAW devices have also demonstrated their ability for acoustic streaming with a velocity up to 3.4 cm/s and for particle concentration. The results have clearly demonstrated that the flexible SAW devices have great potential for applications in electronics and microsystems.
