Maize plants were grown in nutrient solution containing 0, 15, 30, 50 mg organic carbon L−1 of humic substances (HS) (M.W. < 12 KDa) extracted from a cambisol. After 14 d of growth the second and third leaves were collected and analyzed for chlorophyll and protein content and for the activities of ATP sulphurylase (ATP-s) and O-acetylserine sulphydrylase (OAS-s) to evaluate the effect of HS on maize sulphate assimilation pathway. Humic substances induced significant decreases in chlorophyll content, whereas the protein level slightly increased up to 30 mg L−1 of HS. ATP-s and OAS-s were positively affected by HS. The stimulations were different according to the enzyme and leaf investigated. Our results suggest that HS might play an important role in the efficiency of maize plants to assimilate sulphate. Key words: ATP-sulphurylase, chlorophyll, humic substances, maize, O-acetylserine sulphydrilase

Production of adenosine 5'-[35S]sulphatophosphate by a partially purified ATP sulphurylase from Anabaena cylindrica was inhibited by AMP, ADP and P1. Decreases in enzyme activity in the presence of these inhibitors were reversed by increasing the concentrations of ATP. The adenine nucleotides inhibited the enzyme competitively with respect to ATP. In the presence of P1, ATP showed a positive co-operative effect on enzyme activity. The inhibition by P1 was enhanced by increasing concentrations of MG2+. The effects of the adenine nucleotides and the interaction of P1 and Mg2+ on ATP sulphurylase activity are discussed in relation to the regulation of sulphate assimilation via the energy metabolism of the alga.

Abstract. Both disgust and disease-related images appear able to induce an innate immune response but it is unclear whether these effects are independent or rely upon a common shared factor (e.g., disgust or disease-related cognitions). In this study we directly compared these two inductions using specifically generated sets of images. One set was disease-related but evoked little disgust, while the other set was disgust evoking but with less disease-relatedness. These two image sets were then compared to a third set, a negative control condition. Using a wholly within-subject design, participants viewed one image set per week, and provided saliva samples, before and after each viewing occasion, which were later analyzed for innate immune markers. We found that both the disease related and disgust images, relative to the negative control images, were not able to generate an innate immune response. However, secondary analyses revealed innate immune responses in participants with greater propensity to feel disgust following exposure to disease-related and disgusting images. These findings suggest that disgust images relatively free of disease-related themes, and disease-related images relatively free of disgust may be suboptimal cues for generating an innate immune response. Not only may this explain why disgust propensity mediates these effects, it may also imply a common pathway.

Patients withdiabetes mellitus (DM) continues to grow because prosperity and people's lifestyles.Treatment of diabetes often usei njections of insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs. Thetreatment has no side effects. Therefore, it is necessary to find effective drugs using plants thatred betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.). Red betel leaf contains flavonoids which are antioxidants. This study aims to determine the effect and dose of extract of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) The most effective agains blood glucose in mice(Mus musculusL.) male induced sucrose. This study was an experimental study. The research was conducted in October 2015 in the Division of Laboratory Animal and Zoology Department of Biology, State University of Padang. The subject of research in the form of mice (Mus musculus L.) males totaled 24 tails. The design used was completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 4 repetitions. The treatment is given as follows: treatment I: the diabetes control without any treatment given, treatment II: as a negative control (sucrose 3 g/kg bw), treatment III: sucrose+suspension of red betel leaf extract (dosage 0,7 g/kg bw), treatment IV: sucrose+suspension of red betel leaf extract (dosage 1,4 g/kg bw), treatment V: sucrose+suspension of red betel leaf extract (dosage of 2,1 g/kg bw) and treatment VI: sucrose+suspension extracts red betel leaf (dosage 2,8 g/kg bw).The results showed that the extract of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) at a dose of 0,8 g/kg bw 1,4 g/kg bw 2,1 g/kg bw and 2,8 g/kg bw can lowers blood glucose in mice. However, the most appropriate dose in lowering blood glucose in mice (Mus musculus L.) at 2,8 g/kg bw in mice.

Retrograde menstruation lead to I Kappa B Kinase (IKK) fosforilation in peritoneum macrophage and cause secretion of proinflammatory cytokine interleukin1β then stimulate endometriosis cell to produce Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor which lead to increasing of endometriosis lession seen as endometriosis implant area. Cytokine secretion was inhibited through prevention of NF-κB activation by dragon red fruit rind extract (Hylocereuspolyrhizus). The aim of this reserach is to know the effect of dragon red fuit rind extract with 0,25; 0,5; and 1 mg/g bodyweight dosage toward IL-1β, VEGF expression and implant area in endometriosis mice model. The design of this experiment was randomized post test only control group design.Endometrios mice model were made in 14 days and split into two group, positive control group and treatment group after two week negative control group and postive control group were given Na-CMC 0,5% solution consequetively, and treatment group were given dragon red fruit extract with different dosage. Signification number for IL-1β is p>0,05, signification number for VEGF is p>0,05, and implant area signification number is p>0,05. Administration of dragon red fruit rind extract can decrease IL-1β, VEGF, and implant area.
