The need to enhance flexibility on current power plant is linked to the strong penetration of non-dispatchable sources in the current energy network, which causes a dramatic need for ancillary services to sustain the grid operability. A framework including a micro Gas Turbine (mGT), a Heat Pump (HP) and a PCM Storage is considered to enhance plant flexibility while facing grid and price fluctuations during day operations. The system so composed is devoted to electrical energy production only. A proper use of the HP allows, for instance, to heat up the compressor intake temperature whilst the system is operating at minimum load. The system can then produce a lower amount of energy in order to be more competitive in the infra-day energy market. At the same time, the cold storage is charged and the stored energy can be later used to power up the system during the peak hours by cooling the compressor intake. This work presents then the installation of the control system devoted to the management and the control of such complex system. The test-bed is defined to test different operating conditions and to validate the operating framework of the whole compound.

One approach to achieving 99% combustion efficiency (C.E.) and 10 ppmV or lower NOx (at 15%O2) in a micro gas turbine (MGT) combustor fueled by biomass gas at a variety of operating conditions is with the use of flameless combustion (FLC). This paper compares experimentally obtained results and CHEMKIN analysis conducted for the developed combustor. As a result, increase the number of stage of FLC combustion enlarges the MGT operation range with low-NOx emissions and high-C.E. The composition of fuel has a small effect on the characteristics of ignition in FLC. In addition, NOx in the engine exhaust is reduced by higher levels of CO2 in the fuel.

As the energy consumption has been increasing rapidly in the commercial sector in Japan, the market potential for the micro gas turbine is significant and it will be realized substantially if the thermal efficiency is improved. One of measures is to introduce the steam injection system using the steam generated by the heat recovery steam generator. Steam injection tests have been carried out using a micro gas turbine (Capstone C60). Test results showed that key performance parameters such as power output, thermal efficiency and emissions were improved by the steam injection. The stable operation of micro gas turbine with steam injection was confirmed under various operating conditions. Consequently, a micro gas turbine based co-generation package with steam injection driven by a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) with supplementary firing is proposed.

Abstract Experimental and numerical study of flame and emission characteristics in a tubular micro gas turbine combustor is reported. Micro gas turbines are used for distributed power (DP) generation using alternative fuels in rural areas. The combustion and emission characteristics from the combustor have to be studied for proper design using different fuel types. In this study methane, representing fossil natural gas, and biogas, a renewable fuel that is a mixture of methane and carbon-dioxide, are used. Primary air flow (with swirl component) and secondary aeration have been varied. Experiments have been conducted to measure the exit temperatures. Turbulent reactive flow model is used to simulate the methane and biogas flames. Numerical results are validated against the experimental data. Parametric studies to reveal the effects of primary flow, secondary flow and swirl have been conducted and results are systematically presented. An analysis of nitric-oxides emission for different fuels and operating conditions has been presented subsequently.

Wind turbine installation worldwide has increased at unrested pace, as it represents a 100% clean energy with zero CO2 and pollutant emissions. However, visual and acoustic impact of wind turbines is still a drawback, in particular in urban areas. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of an innovative horizontal axis ducted wind turbine, installed in the harbour of Genova (Italy) in 2018: the turbine was designed in order to minimize visual and acoustic impacts and maximize electrical energy production, also during low wind speed periods. The preliminary study and experimental analyses, performed by the authors in a previous study, showed promising results in terms of energy production, compared to a traditional generator ( factor >2.5 on power output). In the present paper, the test campaign on a scaled-up prototype, installed in the urban area of Genova, is performed, with a twofold objective: (i) comparison of the ducted innovative turbine with a standard one, in order to verify the increase in energy production; (ii) analysis of the innovative turbine for different wind speeds and directions, evaluating the influence of ambient conditions on performance. Finally, based on the obtained results, an improved setup is proposed for the ducted wind turbine, in order to further increase energy production mitigating its visual impact.

In this study, the on-going research into the improvement of micro-gas turbine propulsion system performance and the suitability for its application as propulsion systems for small tactical UAVs (<600 kg) is investigated. The study is focused around the concept of converting existing micro turbojet engines into turbofans with the use of a continuously variable gearbox, thus maintaining a single spool configuration and relative design simplicity. This is an effort to reduce the initial engine development cost, whilst improving the propulsive performance. The BMT 120 KS micro turbojet engine is selected for the performance evaluation of the conversion process using the gas turbine performance software GasTurb13. The preliminary design of a matched low-pressure compressor (LPC) for the proposed engine is then performed using meanline calculation methods. According to the analysis that is carried out, an improvement in the converted micro gas turbine engine performance, in terms of thrust and specific fuel consumption is achieved. Furthermore, with the introduction of a CVT gearbox, the fan speed operation may be adjusted independently of the core, allowing an increased thrust generation or better fuel consumption. This therefore enables a wider gamut of operating conditions and enhances the performance and scope of the tactical UAV.

The combustion process in gas-turbine engines produces emissions, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO), which change dramatically with combustor operating conditions. As part of this study, the application of active feedback control technologies to reduce thermal NOx emissions is modeled numerically and demonstrated experimentally. A new optical flame sensor, designed by Ametek Power & Industrial Products, has been successfully implemented as the feedback element in a proof-of-concept control system used to minimize NOx emissions. The sensor consists of a robust mechanical package, as well as electronics suitable for severe gas-turbine environments. Results from system rig tests correlate closely to theoretical predictions, as described in literature and produced by a control system simulation model. The control system simulation model predicts the efficacy of controlling engine operating characteristics based on chemical luminescence of the OH radical. The model consists of a fuel pump and metering device, a fuel-air mixing scheme, a combustion model, the new ultraviolet (UV) feedback flame sensor, and a simple gain block. The input reference to the proportional emissions control is the fuel-to-air equivalence ratio, which is empirically correlated to the desired low level of NOx emissions while satisfying other operating conditions, such as CO emissions and power. Results from the closed-loop emissions control simulation and rig tests were analyzed to determine the capability of the UV flame sensor to measure and control the combustion process in a gas-turbine engine. The response characteristics, overshoot percentage, rise time, settling time, accuracy, resolution, and repeatability are addressed.

Abstract A dynamic model is developed for a Micro Gas Turbine (MGT), characterized by an intrinsic free-spool configuration, coupled to large volumes. This is inspired by an experimental facility at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) called Hyper, which emulates a hybrid MGT and Fuel Cell system. The experiment and model can simulate stable and unstable operating conditions. The model is used to investigate the effects of different volumes on surge events, and to test possible strategies to safely avoid or recover from unstable compressor working conditions. The modelling approach started from the Greitzer lumped parameter approach, and it has been improved with integration of empirical methods and simulated components to better match the real Hyper plant layout and performance. Pressure, flow rate, and frequency plots are shown for the surge behavior comparing two different volume sizes, for cases where gas turbine shaft speed is uncontrolled (open loop) and controlled (closed loop). The ability to recover from a surge event is also demonstrated.

To limit greenhouse gases emissions caused by energy production European Union (EU) prompts heat pump as heat generator which should decrease CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Because of the climatic conditions and low efficiency of electrical energy production and transfer in Poland it could be possible a condensing gas boiler would emit less CO2. The analysis includes ten-year temperature measurements in Białystok where is more severe climate in Poland. Due to relatively high seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) value heat pumps can emit less CO2 than condensing gas boiler and can be applied as ecological heat generators.

Nowadays, the establishment of IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) plants, prompts a growing interest in synthetic fuels for gas turbine based power generation. This interest has as direct consequence the need for understanding of flashback phenomena for premixed systems operated with H2-rich gases. This is due to the different properties of H2 (e.g. reactivity and diffusivity) with respect to CH4 which lead to higher flame speeds in the case of syngases (mixtures of H2-CO). This paper presents the results of experiments at gas turbine like conditions (pressure up to 15 bar, 0.2 < Φ < 0.7, 577K < T0 < 674K) aimed to determine flashback limits and their dependence on the combustion parameters (pressure, inlet temperature and inlet velocity). For the experimental facility used for this work the back propagation of the flame is believed to happen into the boundary layer of the fuel/air duct. Flashback propensity was found to have an appreciable dependence on pressure and inlet temperature while the effects of inlet velocity variations are weak. Explanations for the dependence on these three parameters, based on consideration on laminar and turbulent flame speed data (from modeling and experiments), are proposed. Within the frame of this work, in order to avoid major damages, the experimental facility was equipped with an automatic control system for flashback described in the paper. The control system is able to detect flame propagation into the fuel/air supply, arrest it and restore safe operating conditions by moving the flame out of the fuel/air section without blowing it out. This avoids destruction of components (burner/mixing) and time consuming shut downs of the test rig.
