Internal temperature of the road is one of the important indicators to evaluate the safety of the road, and the microwave radiometer data is only efficient way to acquire the internal temperatures. This study is to evaluate the influence of the surface topography on the brightness temperature (TB) measured the microwave radiometer data. The results are as follows. (1) The surface slope (θ) and its direction play the important roles on the TB. (2) The influence of θ on TB is weaker compared to that of the surface temperature. (3) At least in low latitude regions, the influence of topography on the TB can be neglected in macro scale. The conclusions are essential to better understand the internal physical parameters of the road with the microwave radiometer data.

Lunar surface temperature is one of the fundamental thermophysical parameters of the lunar regolith, which is of great significance to the interpretation of remote-sensing thermal data. In this study, a daytime surface temperature model is established focusing on the lunar superficial layer with high spatial-temporal resolution. The physical parameters at the time of interest are adopted, including effective solar irradiance, lunar libration, large-scale topographic shading, and surrounding diffuse reflection. Thereafter, the 1/64° temperature distributions at five local times are quantitatively generated and analyzed in Sinus Iridum. Also, combined with Chang’E-2 microwave radiometer (CELMS) data and Diviner thermal infrared (TIR) data, the spectral emissivity distributions are estimated as a potential geological application of the simulated surface temperature. The results are as follows: (1) daytime surface temperature in Sinus Iridum is significantly affected by the local topography and observation time, and the influence of diffuse reflection energy is obvious; (2) the emissivity distributions provide a new way to understand the thermophysical properties difference of lunar regolith at different depths; (3) the influence of lunar orbiting revolution and precession on surface temperature should be analyzed carefully, which shows the importance of using the parameters at the time of interest.

A two-scale homogenization method for modelling the hydrodynamic lubrication of mechanical seals with isotropic roughness was developed and presented the influence of surface topography coupled into the lubricating domain. A linearization approach was derived to link the effects of surface topography across disparate scales. Solutions were calculated in a polar coordinate system derived based on the Elrod cavitation algorithm and were determined using homogenization of periodic simulations describing the lubrication of a series of surface topographical features. Solutions obtained for the hydrodynamic lubrication regime showed that the two-scale homogenization approach agreed well with lubrication theory in the case without topography. Varying topography amplitude demonstrated that the presence of surface topography improved tribological performance for a mechanical seal in terms of increasing load-carrying capacity and reducing friction coefficient in the radial direction. A Stribeck curve analysis was conducted, which indicated that including surface topography led to an increase in load-carrying capacity and a reduction in friction. A study of macro-scale surface waviness showed that the micro-scale variations observed were smaller in magnitude but cannot be obtained without the two-scale method and cause significant changes in the tribological performance.

Tire yaw marks deposited on the road surface carry a lot of information of paramount importance for the analysis of vehicle accidents. They can be used: (a) in a macro-scale for establishing the vehicle’s positions and orientation as well as an estimation of the vehicle’s speed at the start of yawing; (b) in a micro-scale for inferring among others things the braking or acceleration status of the wheels from the topology of the striations forming the mark. A mathematical model of how the striations will appear has been developed. The model is universal, i.e., it applies to a tire moving along any trajectory with variable curvature, and it takes into account the forces and torques which are calculated by solving a system of non-linear equations of vehicle dynamics. It was validated in the program developed by the author, in which the vehicle is represented by a 36 degree of freedom multi-body system with the TMeasy tire model. The mark-creating model shows good compliance with experimental data. It gives a deep view of the nature of striated yaw marks’ formation and can be applied in any program for the simulation of vehicle dynamics with any level of simplification.

An accuracy of reproduction of daily variations in the ocean–atmosphere system brightness temperature in the areas of development and movement of tropical hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico is analyzed. The analysis is based on the data of single and group satellite microwave radiometer measurements. The results are obtained using archival measurement data of SSM/I radiometers from the F11, F13, F14, and F15 DMSP satellites during the period of existence of tropical hurricanes Bret and Wilma. An example is given to demonstrate the use of daily brightness temperatures obtained from DMSP satellites for monitoring the development and propagation of hurricane Wilma.

A two-scale method for modelling the Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) of tilted-pad bearings is derived and a range of solutions are presented. The method is developed from previous publications and is based on the Heterogeneous Multiscale Methods (HMM). It facilitates, by means of homogenization, incorporating the effects of surface topography in the analysis of tilted-pad bearings. New to this article is the investigation of three-dimensional bearings, including the effects of both ideal and real surface topographies, micro-cavitation, and the metamodeling procedure used in coupling the problem scales. Solutions for smooth bearing surfaces, and under pure hydrodynamic operating conditions, obtained with the present two-scale EHL model, demonstrate equivalence to those obtained from well-established homogenization methods. Solutions obtained for elastohydrodynamic operating conditions, show a dependency of the solution to the pad thickness and load capacity of the bearing. More precisely, the response for the real surface topography was found to be stiffer in comparison to the ideal. Micro-scale results demonstrate periodicity of the flow and surface topography and this is consistent with the requirements of the HMM. The means of selecting micro-scale simulations based on intermediate macro-scale solutions, in the metamodeling approach, was developed for larger dimensionality and subsequent calibration. An analysis of the present metamodeling approach indicates improved performance in comparison to previous studies.

Land surface temperature (LST) is important factor in global climate change studies, radiation budgets estimating, city heat and others. In this paper, land surface temperature of Guangzhou metropolis was retrieved from two MODIS imageries obtained at night and during the day respectively. Firstly, pixel values were calibrated to spectral radiances according to parameters from header files. Then, the brightness temperature was calculated using Planck function. Finally, The brightness temperature retrieval maps were projected and output. Comparing two brightness temperature retrieval maps, it is concluded that the brightness temperature retrieval are more accurate at night than during the day. Comparing the profile line of brightness temperature from north to south, the brightness temperature increases from north to south. Temperature different from north to south is larger at night than during the day. The average temperature nears 18°C at night and the average temperature nears 26°C during the day, which is consistent with the surface temperature observed by automatic weather stations.

Spaceborne data are becoming sufficiently extensive spatially and sufficiently lengthy over time to provide important gauges of global change. There is a potentially long record of microwave brightness temperature from NASA's Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), followed by the Navy's Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). Thus it is natural to combine data from successive satellite programs into a single, long record. To do this, we compare brightness temperature data collected during the brief overlap period (7 July-20 August 1987) of SMMR and SSM/I. Only data collected over the Antarctic ice sheet are used to limit spatial and temporal complications associated with the open ocean and sea ice. Linear regressions are computed from scatter plots of complementary pairs of channels from each sensor revealing highly correlated data sets, supporting the argument that there are important relative calibration differences between the two instruments. The calibration scheme was applied to a set of average monthly brightness temperatures for a sector of East Antarctica.
