One of the most effective methods of wastewater treatment is a biochemical method that almost completely disposes various dissolved organic matter. To improve the oxidation capacity of aerotanks and to control the biochemical processes of wastewater treatment, it was necessary to determine experimentally biocenosis variability influenced by the environment and other factors. The goal of the present research is intensification of biological wastewater treatment by means of direct effect upon the metabolism of activated sludge microorganisms. The experiment studied the organization of species and quantitative composition of active sludge biocenosis in aerotanks while removing contaminants from wastewater. The experiments were carried out in continuous-flow aerotanks of publicly owned treatment facilities. Everyday over a period of three weeks, samples of microorganisms were obtained from aerotanks, quality and quantity objectives of purified water.

In this article, biologically active tris-(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium ionic liquids (IL) of the general formula [N(CH2CH2OH)3H]+ . –O(O)CCH2YAr (where Ar = aryl, Y = O, S, SO2) are studied as stimulators of biological wastewater treatment intensification (concentration is 10-4-10-8% mass). It was found that ionic liquids being introduced into the active sludge favorably influence the microorganisms of the activated sludge. When biostimulants are used, the biological wastewater treatment passes more intensively, and the indices of contaminantsm, such as ammonium ions and surfactants, decrease.

Abstract Biological treatment methods are used to remove organic and some inorganic substances from wastewater using the simplest organisms that use these substances for nutrition, breaking them down using cellular processes. The article deals with the aerobic, anaerobic and anoxic stages of biological wastewater treatment. Their differences are explained and the best way to use biological processes is analyzed according to the type of industry/production. At wastewater treatment plants, anaerobic treatment is often used at first to remove a significant part of organic substances from wastewater before sending them for further aerobic treatment. Aerobic treatment is effective for various types of wastewater, especially with lower biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). A comparative analysis of wastewater composition from food, oil and gas processing, pharmaceutical and pulp and paper industries was carried out. In the presence of organic compounds, the technology is chosen depending on the total organic matter content or the total COD content, which characterizes the total organic matter in water. A combination of anaerobic and aerobic methods is possible, if a discharge into the sewer system or into water bodies is required. The grounds for the application of biological wastewater treatment of these industries are given.

The technology of microalgae photobioreactors and illuminated by LEDs has been widely studied for the treatment of wastewater. However, sunlight is a free resource and should be taken advantage of. But the question remains whether photobioreactors illuminated by natural (sunlight) light in combination with artificial light can have greater operational stability or greater performance when compared to systems illuminated only by artificial light. In this context, continuous flow photobioreactors illuminated by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) combined, or not, with sunlight were operated and had their performance evaluated. The variables analyzed were pH, OD, chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorophyll - a and total suspended solids. The photobioreactors were effective for removing organic matter, with 75 ± 15% in the photobioreactor illuminated by LED and 65 ± 10% in the photobioreactor illuminated by sunlight and LED. The results showed that the use of combined lighting favors the production of dissolved oxygen and ensures greater operational stability in the removal of carbonaceous organic matter.

Based on the accumulated experience in operating the Minsk Wastewater Treatment Facilities and a review of information sources, a scheme for the hydrobiological analysis of activated sludge was determined, and a form for recording the results of the analysis was provided. For the quantitative account of filamentous microorganisms, an original five-point system was developed. Based on the literature data analysis, favorable conditions for the mass growth of filamentous microorganisms found in activated sludge were determined. Over a long period of time, including different seasons of the year, the improved methodology was tested for monitoring the state of the sludge suspension at two sites of the treatment facilities: traditional four-line continuous-flow aeration tanks at the first site and bioreactors with cascade denitrification at the second site. The species of filamentous microorganisms, permanently living in wastewater treatment structures, have been identified, and the dominant species have been determined. The results of the analysis of filamentous forms and sedimentation characteristics of activated sludge are compared. Conclusions were made about the features of the biocenosis in the aeration tanks at the first site and in the bioreactors at the second site; about the identity of the species composition of the filamentous bacteria communities, the effect of the wastewater composition and treatment conditions (sludge load, occurrence of zones with different levels of aeration) on the properties of the sludge suspension.

Issues related to commissioning a biological treatment plant at the facilities for household and similar in composition wastewater treatment during the trial start of the treatment facilities are considered. The stages of commissioning a biological treatment plant at the wastewater treatment facilities with «inoculating» activated sludge from the operating biological treatment facilities and with dosing easily oxidable organic matter are considered in detail. The equipment configuration of the WWTP-9 produced by Germes Group is described. All stages of the biological treatment plant commissioning are considered through the example of the start-up of WWTP-9 with the use of numerous experimental data. The periods of biological treatment plant commissioning stages have been determined. The problems of adjusting the biological treatment plant and the ways of their elimination to achieve the required result are presented. The technology used at the WWT facilities provides for the effluent quality that meets the requirements for the discharge into a water body of commercial fishing importance.
