The urgency of researching the problems of the Russian economy is beyond doubt. It is determined by the scale and complexity of the tasks set by President V. Putin in 7the May 2018 decree. The purpose of the study is to study the current problems of the Russian economy and, on this basis, offer recommendations for their elimination in order to achieve the indicators indicated by the head of state and above all enter the TOP-5 largest economies of the world. The main objectives of the study were: 1. To identify the main problems of the Russian economy. 2. To analyze the current shortcomings policy. 3. To show the conditions under which the economy can develop at a pace. When studying the main issues of the topic, the authors use the following methods: dialectic, system-functional, economic-statistical, and formal-logical methods; the method of comparative analysis was used by the authors for comparison with the economies of other countries, for example, with the economy of China. In this article, the authors attempted to analyze the main current problems of the Russian economy in order to show which “baggage” should be eliminated in the near future, which priority tasks should be solved in order to make a planned breakthrough in socio-economic development and get into the TOP-5 largest economies in the world.

This article indicates the results a comparative analysis the financing of the advanced countries of the world and similar indicators of Azerbaijan during the period active development of education and modernization of the economy. The methodology work is the fundamental works of foreign scientists, such as reports of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), human development index indicators in the field of determining and assessing the dependence of socio-economic development on public investment in education. It is displayed that Azerbaijan has resources and potential for growth of human capital, for social and economic development of the country. On the basis of the research, some conclusions and proposals are presented that contribute to improving the prospects for the economic development of Azerbaijan.

The tendencies of development of world and Russian economy in new post-crisis terms are analyzed. Fundamental changes are revealed related both to redistribution in global scales of economic influence and structural shifts in the world economy. The influence of new industrialization is analyzed as the most important factor of current economic development in the post-industrial world. The expediency of using the tools of public-private partnership in the Russian economy is discussed that presupposes more active and precise position of the state in formulating and reaching the priorities of country’s socio-economic development.

The article considers comparisons of Russias GDP with other countries basing on the new data recently presented by OECD-Eurostat. The economic potential of Russia is analyzed in retrospect of 20 years with forecast for mid- and long-term. The COVID-19 epidemic has become a serious challenge for the economies of all countries of the world. The consequences of the fight against the spread of the virus have led to serious complications in the Russian economy. This article analyses the measures taken by the federal and regional governments aimed at curbing the spread of the pandemic, as well as supporting the economy of Russia and its subjects. The paper presents foreign experience on the measures taken and a comparative analysis between the countries. In addition, the authors study the influence of government decisions and their effectiveness on the basis of scientific articles, estimates and statistics published in the mass media, forecasts of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, reports of the Federal State Statistic Service.

Demographic crisis remains one of the main challenges to socio-economic development of Russia. The COVID–19 pandemic has aggravated preconditions for a possible recovery from depopulation. The present article substantiates the need to develop and approve the RF social doctrine upon completion of national projects in 2018–2024. The authors suggest their own approach to overcoming the socio-demographic crisis with regard to the long-term demographic dynamics in Russia. Various scenarios of the “post-coronavirus” future of both specific countries and the world as a whole are proposed.

The review examines the results of the December 2020 official census of the population of China, the most populous country in the world. It is noted that the Chinese government is seriously concerned about the low rate of population growth. The authorities fear that a slowdown in population growth and its aging while the size of the labour force is decreasing may seriously slow down economic growth. The opinions and statements of analysts on the prospects of the demographic situation in China in the context of its socio-economic development are presented.
