The relevance of the present study is determined by the demand of the state and society for training pedagogical personnel who are highly motivated for professional activity and chose their profession consciously. Thus, the first premise of the conducted study lies in the need to improve the quality of pedagogical training in the Moscow metropolis. The second premise is the need for the scientific study of the structure of personality and the interrelation of its components presented by personal values and the motives behind the choice of profession. The study aims to identify the correlation of personal value orientations and motives for choosing a future profession in students of the pedagogical faculty of the Moscow City University. The study methods include projective methods (a survey and essays) and standardized methods (Rokeach’s Personal Values Survey, Schwartz’s Value Survey, and “Test of life-meaning orientations” by D.A. Leontiev). The study confirms that personal values correlate with the motives for the choice of profession in pedagogical faculty students. A high correlation between the motive behind choosing the teaching profession and personal values is found in the orientation on interaction with people and on oneself, awareness of one’s professional choice, and social and cultural conditioning. In the categories of gender and financial status, the motives for choosing a profession do not correlate with students’ personal values. The novelty of the study lies in the identification and empirical verification of the scientific method for determining students’ involvement in the future teaching profession. The significance of the study is found in the fact that it reveals a new technology for vocational guidance of applicants of pedagogical university training programs. Moreover, implementation of the study results may increase the effectiveness of the design of students’ education in improving their professional motivation. The presented research makes a scientific contribution to the study of a person’s activity and independence in self-realization in life, the freedom of choice and responsibility for it, for one’s decisions and actions, as well as in the study of the values of future teachers.

A convergent (computer-oriented and traditional) methodology was used in this study including: the methodology for examination of the motivation drivers of professional activity (K. Zamfir); “Square of Values” methodology by O. Murzina; methodology of self-assessment of vocational and pedagogical motivation, Bass’s questionnaire on orientations entitled “Personality orientations”, Henning’s methodology called “Structure of Interests”, Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test. It has been proved that the majority of teaching staff demonstrated the imitative and reproductive level of formedness of the professional competency consistent with all criteria. Focusing on millennials, individuals born between 1980 and 2000 and representing the largest generational population in our history, this research seeks to understand their ethical decision-making processes by exploring the distinctive, yet interconnected, theories of personal values and cognitive moral reasoning. Utilizing a decision-making framework introduced in the 1990s, we discover that there is a statistically supported relationship between a millennial’s personal value orientation and stage of cognitive moral reasoning. Moreover, we discover a strong relationship between three of the four value orientations and a corresponding stage of cognitive moral reasoning. The theoretical and practical research implications of our discovery about millennials’ decision making are discussed.

The paper deals with professional values of journalism students. The grounds for research are the transformation of values in journalists’ professional activity that occurs under conditions of society mediatization and development of new information and communication technologies. The consequences of this transformation include problems like publication of non-validated / non-authentic information, distortion of facts, imposing a false agenda. Media experts are engaged in active debates on preserving the journalists’ professional ethics. In this regard, a need emerges to study professional and value orientations of students – future journalists who are beginning to get acquainted with this profession at a higher education institution. The object of our research was students from Journalism Faculty of the Ural Federal University and the University for Humanities. The research included an online survey of students (n = 202), as well as two interviews with Faculty Heads for profound understanding of the situation in the contemporary journalism education. The findings evidence that fact checking, accuracy and integrity are among the top professional values of journalism students. A journalist, in students’ view, is an innovator capable of creating unique content; their purpose is disclosing the truth and helping people. We can therefore conclude that students respond to value demands of the media environment and at the same time they are oriented at reproducing the traditional principles of journalism ethics, despite media experts’ doubts of preserving professional values in contemporary journalism.
