ABSTRACT Aim: To study which organisms were prevalent in our burn unit and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern in brief. Method: Microbiological data of 1534 patients admitted to the burns unit of the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, Mumbai over a period of 13 years (1994-2006) was reviewed retrospectively. A total of 9333 swabs were cultured and antibiotic sensitivities to the isolated organisms determined. The age group of patients admitted to our facility ranged from one month to 15 years. Result: Klebsiella was the predominant organism in our set-up (33.91%), closely followed by Pseudomonas (31.84%). The antibiotic sensitivities of the isolated organisms are discussed in detail in the text. Conclusion: Every treatment facility has microorganisms unique to it and these change with time. It is therefore of paramount importance to have an in-depth knowledge of the resident organisms and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern so that infection-related morbidity and mortality are improved.

Background : Infection is the common cause of death following burn injury. Antibiotic resistance is a major wide problem in burn unit. We evaluated the pattern of bacterial pathogens isolated from burn wound and sensitivity of antibiotics in burn unit of RSHS. Method : A retrospective descriptive study has been done in Burn Unit RSHS by collecting data from burn unit patient’s medical records over 4 years (2012-2015). Data of demography, characteristic of patients, wound isolates bacteria and sensitivity was collected. Result : A total of 205 patients were admitted to burn unit of RSHS and 164 patients fulfilled the requirements to be analyzed. 114 (69.5%) patients were male and the most commonly affected age groups were young adults 15-40 years old. The mortality rate in burn unit was 71 patients (43.3%) and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) was commonly the primary cause of death (53.5%) and followed by sepsis (42.3%). Microorganism from burn wound isolates were P. aeruginosa  (30.1%), A. baumanii (19.9%), K. pneumonia (19.3%), E. cloacae (9.1%), E. coli (4%), P. stuartii (2.8%). Meropenem was the most sensitive antibiotic against to P. aeruginosa and K. pneumonia.  Amikasin was shown to be sensitive to A. baumanii, E. cloacae and E. coli.  P. stuartii was 100% sensitive to meropenem, amikasin, piperacillin-tazobactam and cotrimoxazole. Cefoperazon, ceftriaxone and ceftazidime showed very low sensitivity (0-14.3%). Conclusion : Dominant bacteria isolated was  P. aeruginosa which was sensitive to meropenem and commonly resistant to the third generation of cephalosporin antibiotics, which becomes multi drug resistant bacteria.

Background: Urinary tract infection is one of the common bacterial infections seeking treatment in clinical practice. A variety of organisms are associated with UTI and the most common organisms are Escherichia coli and other coliforms. Bacteriological investigations of UTI are not complete without antibiotic sensitivity test of the isolate. The aim of this study is to determine the bacteriological profile and antibiotic sensitivity patterns and their disease association.Materials and methods: This study was conducted in Shankarapur Hospital over a period of one year. All cases of suspected UTI sent for urine culture and sensitivity test were evaluated in this study. Disease associated with UTI, bacteriological profile and antibiotic sensitivity patterns were evaluated.Results: A total of 974 cases were sent for urine culture and sensitivity test. The total culture positive cases were 165 (17.4%).  The most common age group for culture positive test was 21- 30 years (33.3%) followed by 31- 40 years (25.5%). Female patients formed the majority of culture positive cases (84.8%) and E Coli (86.1%) was the most common organism isolated. Piperacillin- tazobactum and ceftriaxone were the most common antibiotic sensitive to the organisms. Simple uncomplicated UTI and PID were the most common indication for subjecting the patients to urine culture.Conclusion: UTI is most commonly seen in female of reproductive age group and the most common causative organism is E coli. Culture result and antibiogram helps the clinician for specific treatment of UTI.

Introduction : Neonatal sepsis remains an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in NICU setup and a major challenge for the neonatologists. The prevalent organisms and their antibiotic resistance patterns evolve with time and with the usage of antimicrobials.Aims and Objectives : To analyze the bacteriological profile and antibiotic resistance patterns of proven neonatal sepsis cases in Dhaka Shishu Hospital.Materials and Methods : The study was Prospective observational study. All the clinically suspected cases of Neonatal Sepsis admitted to the Neonatal word from January 2015 to December 2015 were included in the study. Clinically suspected cases of neonatal sepsis further evaluated with blood cultures and antibiotic susceptibility testing using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Data was collected for the following variables: Demographic profile, haematological profile, blood culture result and antibiotic sensitivity patterns.Results : Total 96 cases clinically suspected neonatal sepsis were included in the study. Among them 29 cases (30.21%) was culture positive septicemia. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most common isolate accounting for 31.03% cases followed by Escherichia coli 27.59%. In Klebsiella infection most common sensitivity were Imipenum and Ciprofloxacin which were 77.78 and 33.33% respectively. In E.coli common sensitive drugs were Imipenum and Amikacin. In serratia common sensitive drugs were Imipenum, Netlmicin and Ciprofloxacin.Conclusion : K. pneumoniae was the most common pathogen. Most common sensitivity was Imipenum, Amikacin, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamicin, Netlmicin, and Ceftazidime,.Northern International Medical College Journal Vol.8(1) July 2016: 174-177

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Hypermelanoses involving predominantly the face and the neck is relatively common and often presents a complex diagnostic problem. The present study was done in the study population of 500 patients of facial pigmentation, attending the skin outpatient department in AarupadaiVeedu Medical College and Hospital from October 2015 to September 2017. Aim and objective of the study was to study various clinical patterns of facial pigmentation, their clinical characteristics, their association with other pigmentary disorders and to evaluate the different etiotogical and precipitating factors.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> In this study, a special proforma was prepared. Patients were thoroughly interviewed and examined to find out dermatological and systemic diseases and they were subjected to investigations to evaluate different etiological factors and diagnose the clinical type of facial pigmentation.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The present study showed a strong female preponderance. Among the total study population there were 55% cases of melasma, 20% cases of Riehls melanosis, 10% cases of periorbital pigmentation and 5% of miscellaneous causes.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Facial pigmentation was commonly seen in the females. 21-30 years age group was the most commonly affected age group in all types of facial pigmentation. Melasma, Riehls melanosis and periorbital pigmentation were the most common clinical types of facial pigmentation observed.</p>

Background: India, has an estimated burn incidence of 6-7 million annually. Nearly 10% of these are life threatening and require hospitalization, and main cause of mortality and morbidity of these burn patients were wound infection and sepsis after 1st 24 hours. The present study was tried to determine specific pattern of burn wound infections, and antibiotic susceptibility of those isolates.Methods: After matching inclusion and exclusion criteria, total 55 patients were taken for this institution based, prospective observational study. Wound swabs were collected on day 7 and cultured aerobically in MacConkey agar and 5% blood agar and antibiotic susceptibility testing was done on Muller Hinton agar using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.Results: Among study population 69.1% patients were female and majority (29.1%) of the patients belongs to age group from 21 to 30. It was found that 48 wound swabs were positive for microorganisms, of which Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most common isolated organism (23.6%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (16.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus (14.5%). The most effective antibiotic found in this study was piperacillin/tazobactam, followed by imipenem/cilastatin.Conclusions: It was seen that gram-negative organisms were more prevalent. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common microorganism and piperacillin/tazobactam was most effective antibiotic.
