A method of utilizing cone penetration tests (CPTs) is presented which gives continuous profiles of both the in situ thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity, along with the in situ temperature, for the upper tens of meters of the ground. Correlations from standard CPT results (cone resistance, sleeve friction and pore pressure) are utilized for both thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity for saturated soil. These, in conjunction with point-wise thermal conductivity and in situ temperature results using a Thermal CPT (T-CPT), allow accurate continuous profiles to be derived. The CPT-based method is shown via a field investigation supported by laboratory tests to give accurate and robust results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report the results from a survey carried out among Portuguese companies with their management systems (MSs) certified according to, at least two of the following standards: ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. In addition, the results from a second survey conducted amid a group of experts that pointed out several aspects that impact on the integration level will be dissected. Design/methodology/approach The phenomenon of MSs integration is hardly transferable to a contained environment so some of the common research methods traditionally adopted include case studies, surveys, interviews and observation in situ. The findings from two surveys online among Portuguese companies and Portuguese experts are reported in the current paper. Findings The results suggest that a set of common characteristics is present on the majority of the surveyed companies. On first hand, there is evidence of an effective integration of the policies and the existence of an integrated system manager on the organizational structure of the companies. On the other hand, results suggest that training was provided to top management concerning integration issues, an integrating concept was taken into account during the implementation process and tools, and methods and objectives of the subsystems are aligned. Research limitations/implications This paper addresses the issues raised in the mainstream scientific bibliography through the collection of information amidst Portuguese companies. At this stage, it is not possible to infer at which extent the conclusions may be transferable to other geographic contexts. The small number of companies that completed the survey precludes the statistical generalization of the findings but the analytical generalization is not impaired. Originality/value The authors believe that the conclusions of this paper may aid both practioneers and scholars in the understanding of a complex but manageable organizational phenomenon. In addition, through the contents of this paper companies may collect information regarding the pertinent issues to address when developing their IMSs.

Based on the field investigation of a chemical plant, its plant area was selected as the simulated domain of emergency evacuation. All of staff was considered as the research objects and a questionnaire survey was conducted on them. Then, the survey results were analyzed statistically by SPSS13.0, in light of which the Building EXODUS was used to simulate the emergency evacuation. The results showed that there are 12 factors related to psychological and behavioral response when staff is caught in a liquid chlorine leakage accident. In light of relevancy, those factors are arranged as whether the staff has known the storage location or properties of the chemicals, gender, whether they know the refuge area location, etc. Besides, the poisoning and mortality rate reached 21% during the process of evacuation.

SummaryThe fall of a shower of meteorites numbering several hundred fragments at Wiluna, Western Australia, on the night of 2 September 1967, has been investigated. Although the dispersion ellipse had been largely obscured by removal of fragments before a party of scientists were able to make a field investigation, it has, nevertheless, been possible to make a reasonable estimate of the shower distribution pattern. In spite of this removal of fragments, a number of pieces of meteorite were still found in situ. The bulk of the total recovery is in the collections of the Western Australian Museum, and the physical characteristics of these masses and their petrography is described. In all, some 490 individual fusion-crust coated stones and a large number of broken stony fragments are known to have been recovered. The meteorite is an olivine bronzite chondrite remarkably rich in discrete nodules of nickel iron, up to an inch across, commonly aggregated with troilite. A full chemical analysis of this fresh meteoritic material has been supplied by the British Museum (Natural History).

AbstractPhenotypic plasticity is an important adaptation to spatial and temporal environmental variations. For submerged macrophytes, adaptation to water depth and light variation is particularly important. To determine the morphological and physiological adaptive strategies of Vallisneria natans at different water depths and light conditions, we combined field investigation, light control experiment and in situ physiological response experiment. In the field investigation and the light control experiment, both water depth and light intensity had prominent effects on the morphological of V. natans, especially in fresh weight and leaf length. The leaf length elongated more rapidly at intermediate water depth sites with lower light intensity. In the in situ experiment, the survival boundary of V. natans is 5.5 m in Lake Erhai. Below this depth, the chlorophyll-a content increased gradually with increasing water depth. Our results demonstrated that V. natans can adapt to water depth and light availability by changing morphological, physiological and resource allocation. At low light condition, V. natans invested more resource for light acquisition, simultaneously, changing the photosynthetic pigment content to compensate for light attenuation; conversely, more resource was directed towards reproduction. These results will provide new insight for species selection when conducting aquatic plants restoration in freshwater ecosystem.HIGHLIGHTSWater depth and light availability affect the morphology, physiology, and resource allocation of V. natans.An alternative resource allocation pattern of V. natans could shift between light acquisition and reproduction.

The paper presents the analysis of the monitoring system of the embankment supported on concrete columns and overlaid by a load transfer platform with the embedded steel grid. This field investigation was to study the complex interaction between the columns, the load transfer platform layer, and steel grid via in situ measurements during erection and live loading of the embankment. The study was focused on the behaviour of steel grid and the behaviour of the outer rows of columns since there are limited reference data available for this problem. The system was designed to inform the engineers about the condition of the embankment at every stage of construction and during standard operation of the road. The measurements brought the information on strain variations of steel grid, concrete columns, and structural settlement and provided necessary evidence for the embankment numerical model validation.

In Ganzhou City, China, a complex bedrock lithology and structure, diverse topography, frequent engineering works, and abundant rainfall generate frequent, sudden, small-scale landslides that are difficult to prevent and control. This study integrates evidence data from a field investigation of landslides with geological-engineering analogues to document the distribution and development of these geohazards in Ganzhou City. Based on the distribution of landslides across different types of bedrock and soil, we identify five lithological groups prone to slope failure: granite, metamorphics (slate and phyllite), red sedimentary layers, clastic sedimentary rocks with weak interlayers, and loose Quaternary deposits. Granite and metamorphic bedrock are the two lithologies most prone to landslides. Our analysis of the genesis and mode of slope failure suggests that most landslides in Ganzhou City originated from four modes of slope failure: scouring erosion collapse, steep slope collapse, rock sliding along a rock stratum, and wedge-shaped block sliding and caving. An in-situ model test and numerical simulations were used to explore the evolution of slope deformation and failure on the most landslide-prone lithological groups, and the accumulation of debris post-failure. This work provides a reference for the assessment of the risk from, and the management of, landslide geohazards in Ganzhou City and geologically similar regions.

The flash flood and debris flow after a heavy rainfall wiped out a village of southern Japan on the tragic midnight of 10 July 1997, and a great loss of property and lives took place in this ill-fated incident. After the heavy rainfall, the debris flow induced by a sudden flash flood took 21 lives in Southern Kyushu. Detailed field investigation, in situ survey, electrical survey, and hydrogeological analyses were conducted to find out the triggering factors of the disaster. The main factors of this disaster were a hidden fault and the perched groundwater. Moving soil mass downhill into the agricultural pond had triggered the flash flood. The details of sequential disaster events as perceived from the observation and analyses are presented in this paper.
