Flow Induced Motions are always an important subject during both design and operational phases of an offshore platform life. These motions could significantly affect the performance of the platform, including its mooring and oil production systems. These kind of analyses are performed using basically two different approaches: experimental tests with reduced models and, more recently, with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) dynamic analysis. The main objective of this work is to present a new approach, based on an analytical methodology using static CFD analyses to estimate the response on yaw motions of a Tension Leg Wellhead Platform on one of the several types of motions that can be classified as flow-induced motions, known as galloping. The first step is to review the equations that govern the yaw motions of an ocean platform when subjected to currents from different angles of attack. The yaw moment coefficients will be obtained using CFD steady-state analysis, on which the yaw moments will be calculated for several angles of attack, placed around the central angle where the analysis is being carried out. Having the force coefficients plotted against the angle values, we can adjust a polynomial curve around each analysis point in order to evaluate the amplitude of the yaw motion using a limit cycle approach. Other properties of the system which are flow-dependent, such as damping and added mass, will also be estimated using CFD. The last part of this work consists in comparing the analytical results with experimental results obtained at the LOC/COPPE-UFRJ laboratory facilities.

Five processes controlling the production of soot from gaseous hydrocarbons are distinguished: gas reactions producing radical fragments on which nucleation may begin; nucleation; coagulation; growth; and oxidation. A fundamental model capable of taking into account all these processes is described. The model is applied to the conditions of a practical rocket engine, in which production of soot in the exhaust jet is governed by the rate of pyrolysis of methane in the chamber. Predictions made for these conditions agree with experimental results. The rate controlling processes and key intermediate species are identified.

This paper presents a new approach for obstacle avoidance of small mobile robots, which combine the position sensitive detector (PSD) with digital compass. It is important for an autonomous robot to explore its surroundings in performing the task of localization and navigation for searching. Because of the complexity of the environment, one simple kind of sensors is not sufficient for robot to accomplish these tasks. In this paper, the small mobile robots are enabled to identify barriers and distinguish surroundings by using the angle signal from the digital compass which is generally mounted on the robot. Experimental results indicate that this approach based on digital compass shows great potential in autonomous robot obstacle avoidance.

<p class="Default">In this paper, a new approach to the design of an UWB monopole antenna with dual band-notched characteristics is presented.   The antenna has the form of an elliptical monopole over a ground plane having an elliptical slot to achieve the UWB. The dual-band notch function is created by inserting a U-shaped and a C-shaped slots on the radiating patch, thus no extra size is needed. The proposed antenna shows a good omnidirectional radiation pattern across the band from 3.2 to more than 14 GHz. The dual band-rejection is for 4.88-5.79GHz centered at 5.4GHz and 7.21-8.46 GHz centered at 7.8 GHz. The antenna prototype using the FR-4 substrate with εr=4.3 has a compact size of 25mm×25 mm ×1.45mm. The fabricated prototype showed experimental results comparable to those obtained from the simulations.</p>

HE stain images play a crucial role in the medical imaging process. Often these images are regarded as of golden standards by physicians for the quality and accuracy. These images are fuzzy by nature, and hence, traditional hard-based techniques are not able to deal with this. Thereby, a decrease in the accuracy of the analysis process may be experienced. Preprocessing of these images is utmost needed so that the fuzziness may be removed to a satisfactory level. A new approach for tackling this problem is introduced in this chapter. The proposed technique is soft computing-based advanced adaptive ameliorated CLAHE. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach than the other traditional techniques.

This paper defines a new approach and investigates a fundamental problem in route planners. This capability is important for robotic vehicles(Martian Rovers, etc.) and for planning off-road military maneuvers. The emphasis throughout this paper will be on the design and analysis and hieiaichical implementation of our route planner. This work was motivated by anticipation of the need to search a grid of a trillion points for optimum routes. This cannot be done simply by scaling upward from the algorithms used to search a grid of 10,000 points. Algorithms sufficient for the small grid are totally inadequate for the large grid. Soon, the challenge will be to compute off-road routes more than 100 km long and with a one or two-meter grid. Previous efforts are reviewed and the data structures, decomposition methods and search algorithms are analyzed and limitations are discussed. A detailed discussion of a hieraichical implementation is provided and the experimental results are analyzed.

A new approach to dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is introduced. It is based on the assumption that the critical conditions for DRX and the arrest of DRX grain boundaries are related to the development of mobile subboundaries. The theoretical predictions are compared to experimental results during incipient and steady-state DRX. The grain size sensitivity of the DRX grains establishes the desired link between deformation and DRX microstructure.

Extracting knowledge from Wikipedia has attracted much attention in recent ten years. One of the most valuable kinds of knowledge is type information, which refers to the axioms stating that an instance is of a certain type. Current approaches for inferring the types of instances from Wikipedia mainly rely on some language-specific rules. Since these rules cannot catch the semantic associations between instances and classes (i.e. candidate types), it may lead to mistakes and omissions in the process of type inference. The authors propose a new approach leveraging attributes to perform language-independent type inference of the instances from Wikipedia. The proposed approach is applied to the whole English and Chinese Wikipedia, which results in the first version of MulType (Multilingual Type Information), a knowledge base describing the types of instances from multilingual Wikipedia. Experimental results show that not only the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art comparison methods, but also MulType contains lots of new and high-quality type information.

This account outlines the results obtained in the author's laboratory on the asymmetric cyclopropanation of enantiopure 1-phosphorylvinyl p-tolyl sulfoxides with sulfur ylides and diazoalkanes. Based on experimental results and theoretical calculations, the transition-state model for asymmetric cyclopropanation is proposed. A great synthetic value of the reaction investigated is exemplified by the total synthesis of constrained analogs of bioactive compounds, namely, enantiopure cyclic analog of phaclofen and cyclopropylphosphonate analogs of nucleotides.
