The objective was to evaluate the effect of substituting soybean meal with cottonseed meal in supplements containing 15% and 30% of crude protein (CP), as well as evaluate the effect of supplementation use, on the performance and nutritional status of Nellore heifers. Forty heifers that were 13 months old and 250 ± 4 kg were kept in five 2.5-ha paddocks covered with Brachiaria decumbens. They were compared as they received different supplements (1 kg/head.day) in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial – two protein sources (soybean and cottonseed meal) by two protein concentrations (15% and 30%) plus a Control treatment, which was a mineral mix only. The supplemented heifers showed greater weight gains, final bodyweight (P < 0.10) and higher intake of all evaluated nutrients (P < 0.10), as well as greater digestibility of these nutrients compared with those from the Control treatment. The animals fed supplements containing 15% CP had lower digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, CP and neutral detergent insoluble fibre corrected for ash and protein. These animals also had lower total digestible nutrients as compared with those which received a supplement containing 30% CP (P < 0.10). The treatments containing cottonseed meal provided greater dry matter digestibility (P < 0.10). Cottonseed meal can fully substitute soybean meal to grazing heifers during the rainy season. Supplements containing 30% of CP provided greater digestibility than 15% CP supplements. Supplemented animals had better performance.

Quantitative estimates of disappearances of dry matter, nitrogen and amino acids anterior to the mid-point and terminal ileumof the small intestine were made in pigs prepared with re-entrant cannulas and offered six diets containing wheat alone or supplemented with either meat meal, fish meal, peanut meal, soybean meal or sunflower meal. Apparent digestibilities of dietary dry matter and nitrogen were also estimated by faecal measurements. Disappearance of dry matter and nitrogen was greater anterior to the mid-point than at the end of the small intestine and the rectum. Amounts disappearing at each location and between the three locations differed significantly between protein sources. Up to 10% of dietary dry matter and nitrogen disappeared in the large intestine. For lysine, methionine, threonine and valine, absorption was greater anterior than posterior to the midpoint of the small intestine for all diets except that containing only wheat. Measurements made of the disappearance of amino acids anterior to the large intestine indicated that the apparent availability of the majority of ammo acids of peanut meal, followed by soybean meal, was greater than those of meat meal (52 % crude protein) and fish meal (50 % crude protein).

 The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of sunflower cake replacing soybean meal in beef cattle diets on the in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM), organic matter (IVDOM), crude protein (IVDCP) and the ruminal fermentation kinetics and parameters. The experiment was analyzed according to a completely randomized design. The treatments consisted of four levels of sunflower cake, 0, 200, 400, 600 g kg-1, replacing soybean meal in the concentrate of beef cattle diets. The coefficients of IVDDM, IVDOM and IVDCP presented a quadratic effect with the addition of sunflower cake. The soluble fraction (fraction B) degradation rate and total gas production decreased linearly with the inclusion of sunflower cake. Values of pH in ruminal fluid were higher for levels 0, 200 and 600 g kg-1 sunflower cake. Sunflower cake can replace soybean meal by up to 280 g kg-1 in the concentrate of beef cattle diets, improving the in vitro digestibility of dry matter organic, matter and crude protein. Levels above 400 g kg-1 reduce ruminal digestion rate, digestibility and release of final fermentation products.

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of phytase source and feed pelleting on digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein, organic matter (OM), and phosphorus (P) with different doses of phytase in pigs. In Exp. 1, ten barrows (31.4 ± 3.5 kg of BW) were individually housed in metabolic crates and allotted to a replicated 5 × 6 Latin square design with 5 diets and 6 periods. In Exp. 2, ten barrows (28.2 ± 3.2 kg of BW) were individually housed in metabolic crates and allotted to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design with 5 diets and 5 periods. Each period lasted 10 d consisted of a 5-d adaptation and a 5-d collection periods and the marker to marker method was used for fecal collection. In both experiments, a basal diet was prepared based on corn and soybean meal without phytase or inorganic P. Four additional diets were prepared in a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement with 2 phytase sources (Buttiauxella spp. or Escherichia coli) and 2 feed forms (mash or pellet). Both experiments employed the same treatments but had different supplemental phytase doses (500 and 1,500 FTU/kg in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). In Exp. 1, supplemental phytase increased standardized total tract digestibility of P (66.1 vs. 51.7%; P &lt; 0.001) with no effects of phytase source or feed pelleting. Feed pelleting increased digestibility of DM, crude protein, and OM (P &lt; 0.001). In Exp. 2, supplemental phytase increased standardized total tract digestibility of P (72.8 vs. 44.8%; P &lt; 0.001) with no effects of phytase source or feed pelleting. Feed pelleting increased digestibility of DM and OM (P &lt; 0.001). Taken together, supplemental phytase at 500 and 1,500 FTU/kg increases P digestibility regardless of phytase source or feed pelleting.

Abstract Background The aim of this study is a comparison between some different protein sources in sheep rations to identify the best protein source that achieves the highest production performance and the lowest economical feed efficiency. Twenty Farafra male lambs weighed on average 41.39 ± 1.66 kg were divided randomly into four similar groups of 5 animals each. All groups were fed on concentrate feed mixture (CFM) at 3% of their body weight, and wheat straw fed ad lib. to replace 100% of the soybean meal (SBM) as a source of protein, black cumin seed meal (BCSM), cottonseed meal (CSM) and sesame seed meal (SSM) were incorporated into the CFM. The feeding trial extended for 66 days followed by digestibility and nitrogen (N) balance trials. Results The results indicated no difference in total feed intake between experimental groups. Digestibility of crude protein, ether extract and crude fiber for animals fed CSM ration was higher (p < 0.05) than those fed the other rations. On the other hand, the CSM ration recorded a higher value of digestible crude protein than SBM and BCSM rations. Lambs gave rations containing CSM was higher (p < 0.05) average daily weight gain compared with those fed the other rations. Lambs that fed CSM ration were better to feed conversion as kg dry matter intake/kg gain than those fed the other rations. Relative economic efficiency was the best for CSM ration as compared to other protein sources. Nitrogen balance value of sheep fed CSM diet had the highest (p < 0.05) value compared with those fed different sources. Rumen fermentation showed that the pH value was the lowest with SSM, NH3-N concentration was higher for BCSM and SSM, and total volatile fatty acids were higher for SBM compared with the other rations. Conclusion It could be concluded that cottonseed meal was the best treatment for digestibility coefficient, average daily gain, highest nitrogen balance, better feed conversion ratio and also the best economic efficiency compared to soybean meal, black cumin seed meal and sesame seed meal treatments. It can replace 100% soybean meal by cottonseed meal in sheep ration when economics is to be considered.

The bromatological composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of millet cultivars were assessed for different nitrogen doses and two sowing seasons in the Ceres municipality of Goiás state, Brazil. The treatments consisted of three millet cultivars (ADR-7010, ADR-500 and BRS-1501), four nitrogen (N) doses (0, 50, 100 and 200kg ha-1 of N) and two sowing seasons. Three replicates and a randomised block design with a 3 x 4 x 2 factorial scheme were used. Two cuttings were performed in each season when plants reached an average height of 0.70 cm. No significant interactions were observed between or among cultivars for N doses and dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) contents. The DM, CP, NDF and ADF contents were significantly different between N doses. The DM and CP contents increased as the N dose increased to 100kg ha-1. The maximum DM and CP contents were 11.14 and 22.53%, respectively. The NDF and ADF contents were higher in the control treatment (60.11 and 30.01%, respectively). In addition, the lowest ADF and NDF concentrations occurred at an N dose of 50kg ha-1(56.33 and 30.23%, respectively). The DM contents were higher for the February sowing, with an average of 10.59%. The highest CP and ADF contents were found for the December sowing (22.46 and 31.58%, respectively). No significant differences were found for millet cultivars, N doses or sowing seasons. A significant interaction was found between sowing season and millet cultivar. The BRS-1501 cultivar had a higher in vitro dry matter digestibility in the December/2010 sowing (73.88%).

Supplementation with LLM or SBM significantly increase</em><em>d</em><em> dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and crude fiber intake (</em><em>P</em><em>&lt;0.05). This fact showed that LLM or SBM supplementation made an </em><em>improvement</em><em> of rumen fermentation by microbes. Comparison between LLM and SBM to basal diet clearly showed that basal diet </em><em>wa</em><em>s the lowest (</em><em>P</em><em>&lt;0.0</em><em>5</em><em>) nutrien</em><em>t</em><em> intake and nutrien</em><em>t</em><em> digestibility, however, the animal fed basal diet degraded crude fiber was not </em><em>affected</em><em>. Summary The nylon bag technique was used to estimate the degradability of the dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) of herbage samples and supplementary feeds from recent grazing experiments with dairy cows conducted in Victoria. The cumulative disappearance data for CP were used to calculate the effective rumen degradability of CP (ERDP, g/kg DM) for these feeds at rumen outflow rates of 0.02, 0.05 or 0.08/h. Crude protein was more extensively degraded than DM in all herbage samples collected before grazing, or in those samples taken to represent the herbage consumed by grazing cows. The ERDP of spring pastures (excluding the dead material and postgrazed samples) was generally in the range 103–197 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.02/h and in the range 74–142 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.08/h. For summer pastures, the ERDP was generally in the range 80–128 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.02/h and in the range 58–108 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.08/h. For autumn pastures, ERDP ranged from 108 to 170 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.02/h and from 84 to 140 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.08/h. There were only 2 herbage samples collected during the winter, which had ERDP of 237 and 249 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.02/h and 213 and 222 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.08/h. Values for ERDP tended to be higher for these winter samples compared with spring samples. In contrast, autumn samples tended to have lower ERDP than spring samples. It is shown that metabolisable protein is unlikely to limit milk production of cows consuming 17 kg herbage DM/cow. day and producing up to 30 L milk/day, when milk production is determined from metabolisable energy supply. The excesses in metabolisable protein ranged from 0.48 to 1.21 kg/cow. day from a subset of spring herbage samples cut to represent that selected by cows and from 0.14 to 0.23 kg/cow. day from summer herbage samples. The degradability characteristics of the herbage samples were similar to some estimates for temperate herbages in the United Kingdom and from limited data from Australia and should form a useful basis on which to assess whether additional metabolisable protein is required as supplements for dairy cows grazing pastures in Victoria. There was a positive (P<0.01) relationship between CP content and ERDP (R2 = 0.93), across herbage samples indicating it could be possible to estimate ERDP for herbage samples that have been assessed for CP content. There was also a significant (P<0.01) positive relationship between the effective degradability of DM of herbage and ERDP (R2 = 0.77). The relationships between in vitro dry matter digestibility or neutral detergent fibre and ERDP were also significant (P<0.01), but accounted for even less of the variability. The ERDP in cereal grain-based supplements ranged from 87 to 111 g/kg DM, at a outflow rate from the rumen of 0.02/h, compared with 70–92 g/kg DM, at an outflow rate of 0.08/h. The compounded supplements containing varying levels of cereal grain, lupins and cottonseed meal, had effective degradabilities of CP that generally declined as the content of lupins decreased and the content of cottonseed meal increased. However, ERDP increased to 152 g/kg DM because of the increasing CP content with increasing cottonseed meal. These results are compared with previously published estimates of effective degradability of CP for supplementary feeds.

The research aims to evaluate calsium soap protection as feed supplement based on dry matter<br />digestibility, organic matter digestibility and pH in vitro in the rumen and post rumen. Calsium soap<br />was produced from sardine fish oil and soybean meal, through two protection methods. It was<br />saponification and microencapsulation. This research used Split Subject Repeated Measurement<br />Design with 3 treatments (calcium soap, soybean meal and pangola grass) which each treatment was<br />repeated 5 times. The observation kinetics of dry matter digestibility, organic matter digestibility, and<br />pH rumen fluid were done in incubation times (2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 hours respectively). The first<br />results of the research showed that in the first step (rumen) has dry matter digestibility of calcium<br />soaps: 38.65; 40.00; 42.66; 46.32; 54.40 and 51.40% respectively; organic matter digestibility: 39.44;<br />41.27; 44, 31; 46.32; 56.62 and 52.50% respectively. Kinetics of pH rumen fluid: 6.89; 6.79; 6.78;<br />6.74; 6.71, and 6.88 respectively. In the second step (post rumen), the digestibility of calsium soap<br />production has dry matter digestibility of 74.85% and organic matter of digestibilty of 72.94%. The<br />results could be concluded that in the rumen, calcium soap is the most microbial degradation resistant<br />compared the others and it can be degraded and digested in the abomasum to the small intestine.<br />Therefore pH of rumen fluid is optimal, so it does not interfere with the fermentation in the rumen.<br />Keywords: calsium soap, in vitro, dry matter digestibily, organic matter digestibility, pH value

It was used 27 goat kids (18 ¾ Boer + ¼ Saanen and nine Saanen; 18.0 ± 1.60 kg) distributed in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement to evaluate productive performance and the total digestibility of dry matter and nutrients in the rations. Diets were composed of soybean meal, soybean meal + dry yeast or dry yeast as protein source, oat hay, ground corn and vitamin-mineral mixture with mean composition of 2.50 Mcal of ME/kg DM and 17.0% of crude protein on average. Digestibility was determined using indigestible neutral detergent fiber as marker. Intakes of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and total carbohydrates were not altered by rations. However, inclusion of dry yeast in the rations reduced ingestions of ether extract, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber. Within breed groups, the ¾ Boer + ¼ Saanen goat kids showed the highest intakes of dry matter and nutrients, as well as the best means of daily gain, feed conversion and days in feedlot. Digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and total carbohydrates were higer - and the digesbility of ether extract was lower - for animals fed rations with dry yeast. There were no differences in digestibility of neutral detergent fiber. Rations with dry yeast showed the highest values of total digestible nutrients. Dry yeast can be used as alternative protein source in rations for goat kids because it does not change animal performance and it does have higher nutritional value than soybean meal. ¾ Boer + ¼ Saanen kids show, in feedlots, better performance in growth and finishing phases when compared to Saanen kids.

The effect of frosting on the nutritive value of wheat grain was determined in a digestibility experiment with sheep. Thirty-six Merino wethers were maintained on diets of lucerne chaff (30%) and whole wheat grain (70%) which was sourced from either severely frosted (SF), lightly frosted (LF) or unfrosted (UF) crops. The experiment was conducted in a repeated balance study with 8 replications per treatment diet for each of the 7 treatment diets, new animals were assigned to the chaff control (treatment diet 8). The diets were offered at the liveweight maintenance level of feeding and the digestibility of the wheat component was calculated by adjusting for the digestibility of the lucerne component. Frosting had a relatively small effect on the nutritive value of wheat grain for sheep. Dry matter digestibility for UF, LF and SF wheats did not differ significantly (0.886, 0.854 and 0.839, respectively), although the SF wheat had a lower digestibility than the UF wheat at P<0.10. The organic matter digestibility, digestible organic matter in the dry matter and estimated metabolisable energy (ME) content were all significantly (P<0.05) lower for SF compared with UF wheat grain (0.856 v. 0.908, 0.859 v. 0.915 and 13.5 v. 14.3 MJ/kg DM respectively). This study demonstrated that wheat from the severely frosted wheat crop had a lower estimated ME content of about 1 MJ/kg DM (equivalent to about 6% less ME) than wheat from the unfrosted crop fed in this study. However, the resultant ME of all samples fed fell within the normal observed ME range for wheat.
