This paper discusses some of the new developments in corpus linguistics in China. In the area of Chinese corpus compilation it presents large-scale text databases, representative corpora, annotated corpora, lexical databases for information processing, phonological, dialectal, spoken and other specialized corpora. In connection with the analysis and annotation of Chinese corpora, the characteristics of the Chinese language, word segmentation, tagging, parsing, and some corpus analytical systems are described. Concerning English corpus studies, some corpora of English as a Foreign Language and corpus-based research are depicted. On this basis tentative conclusions are drawn.

The necessity of studying the use of language corpora in foreign language teaching at the university level as a possible connector with contemporary scientific and research trends is intensified by the very need to bring the universities in the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to the regional and European scientific and research networks as well as to profile them within the aforementioned academic space. Efforts to set the corpus linguistic theoretical and practical posits as the basis of contemporary interdisciplinary linguistic research in the educational practices are aimed at emphasising the need to redesign some of the courses in the foreign language departments where students and teachers have expressed a desire and an interest in learning about this approach to the applied linguistic practice. The paper presents the results of a project aimed at familiarising students with the corpus studies and fundamentals of corpus linguistics, as well as with working independently on the selected corpora with the goal to achieve learning outcomes that could not have been previously included in teaching in the first cycle of academic studies. The paper primarily focuses on the challenges and experience gained through the introduction of the corpus studies within the English lexicology classes. Challenges faced by the teacher during the presentation of the corpus linguistic analysis, students’ disinterestedness for the linguistic theoretical and practical research, the lack of literature and practical tools, as well as the limited time and content action framework, have been overcome nevertheless, which is evident from the students’ positive feedback. The most valuable result is the actual raising awareness of students as far as the importance of their role as active participants in the realisation of teaching process outcomes is concerned - the process which is expected to possess not only an educational function but also to create a practitioner who will be able to respond to the challenges of the contemporary job market.

Numerous corpus studies have suggested that teaching materials design could greatly benefit from the empirical information about language use provided by corpus linguistics. In spite of the awareness that corpus-based research can offer valuable insights for materials development, still relatively small number of studies report on the practical applications of corpus data for teaching materials development. There is no clear guideline or framework on how corpora and corpus studies could assist in developing teaching materials. Hence, this study focusses on one grammatical item which poses problems to Malaysian learners, that is, prepositions. The objectives are (i) to identify prepositions in the British National Corpus as a reference corpus and the descriptions offered by linguists and grammarians as a reference grammar, and (ii) to provide a framework to use reference corpus, reference grammar and corpus-based research, as a resource for developing materials in the teaching of prepositions. In order to meet the objectives, content analysis was used as the methodology throughout this study. The findings showed that reference corpus, reference grammar and corpus-based research could be used systematically as guidance to develop corpus-informed materials. It is hoped that this contribution of knowledge could have an impact on second language learning-teaching.

Over the past decades, peptide as a therapeutic candidate has received increasing attention in drug discovery, especially for antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), anticancer peptides (ACPs) and antiinflammatory peptides (AIPs). It is considered that the peptides can regulate various complex diseases which are previously untouchable. In recent years, the critical problem of antimicrobial resistance drives the pharmaceutical industry to look for new therapeutic agents. Compared to organic small drugs, peptide- based therapy exhibits high specificity and minimal toxicity. Thus, peptides are widely recruited in the design and discovery of new potent drugs. Currently, large-scale screening of peptide activity with traditional approaches is costly, time-consuming and labor-intensive. Hence, in silico methods, mainly machine learning approaches, for their accuracy and effectiveness, have been introduced to predict the peptide activity. In this review, we document the recent progress in machine learning-based prediction of peptides which will be of great benefit to the discovery of potential active AMPs, ACPs and AIPs.

AbstractThe tremendous growth of data traffic has spurred a rapid evolution of optical communications for a higher data transmission capacity. Next-generation fiber-optic communication systems will require dramatically increased complexity that cannot be obtained using discrete components. In this context, silicon photonics is quickly maturing. Capable of manipulating electrons and photons on the same platform, this disruptive technology promises to cram more complexity on a single chip, leading to orders-of-magnitude reduction of integrated photonic systems in size, energy, and cost. This paper provides a system perspective and reviews recent progress in silicon photonics probing all dimensions of light to scale the capacity of fiber-optic networks toward terabits-per-second per optical interface and petabits-per-second per transmission link. Firstly, we overview fundamentals and the evolving trends of silicon photonic fabrication process. Then, we focus on recent progress in silicon coherent optical transceivers. Further scaling the system capacity requires multiplexing techniques in all the dimensions of light: wavelength, polarization, and space, for which we have seen impressive demonstrations of on-chip functionalities such as polarization diversity circuits and wavelength- and space-division multiplexers. Despite these advances, large-scale silicon photonic integrated circuits incorporating a variety of active and passive functionalities still face considerable challenges, many of which will eventually be addressed as the technology continues evolving with the entire ecosystem at a fast pace.

Silk continues to amaze. This review unravels the most recent progress in silk science, spanning from fundamental insights to medical silks. Key advances in silk flow are examined, with specific reference to the role of metal ions in switching silk from a storage to a spinning state. Orthogonal thermoplastic silk molding is described, as is the transfer of silk flow principles for the triggering of flow-induced crystallization in other non-silk polymers. Other exciting new developments include silk-inspired liquid–liquid phase separation for non-canonical fiber formation and the creation of “silk organelles” in live cells. This review closes by examining the role of silk fabrics in fashioning facemasks in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology [1-4] has been shown to have significant performance and fabrication advantages over conventional bulk processing for a wide variety of large scale CMOS IC applications. Advantages in radiation environments has generated significant interest in this technology from military and space science communities [5,6]. Possible advantages of SOI technology for low power, low voltage and high performance circuit applications is under serious consideration by several commercial IC manufacturers [7,8].

Several advanced, coal- and biomass-based combustion turbine power generation technologies are currently under development and demonstration. A key technology component in these power generation systems is the hot gas filter. These power generation technologies must utilize highly reliable and efficient hot gas filter systems to protect the turbine and to meet environmental constraints if their full thermal efficiency and cost potential is to be realized. Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) has developed a hot gas filter system to near-commercial status for large-scale power generation applications. This paper reviews recent progress made by SWPC in hot gas filter test development programs and in major demonstration programs. Two advanced hot gas filter concepts, the “Inverted Candle” and the “Sheet Filter”, having the potential for superior reliability are also described.

The present study aimed to explore the role of English songs in Saudi students’ self-learning of English as a foreign language. The study employed one data collection tool which was an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 38 Saudi students at the Community College of King Saud University in the second semester of the academic year 2020. The examination and analysis of the data showed that listening to English songs motivated the Saudi students to learn English in a self-study mode, augmented their English vocabulary, improved their speaking skill and developed their spelling or writing skill to a considerable extent. It is, therefore, recommended that more large-scale quantitative or qualitative studies on the role of English songs in Saudi students’ self-learning of English as a foreign language be conducted to confirm the findings of the present study, challenge them or yield new ones.
