Sommario Drawing on Antoine Berman’s theory of translation as a critical act, this article analyzes the Swedish translation of Giovanni Verga's masterpiece I Malavoglia. The actual translation analysis therefore takes as its starting point a pre-analysis that highlights the translator’s individual motives to deviate from the source text. The results show that the Swedish translator has done extensive changes to Verga’s polyphonic novel, giving it a more homogeneous form. Drawing on theoretical ideas on the translator’s unconscious and habitus, the article shows that the translator has downplayed the novel’s expressive and vernacular traits as well as the patriarchal perspectives, emphasizing instead the novel’s religious paths.

The purpose of the paper is to analyze the promising and offering utterances in commissive of speech act, translation techniques and its equivalences in Forrest Gump movie subtitles. The method used is qualitative method. The results showed several techniques employed, such as adaptation, borrowing, established equivalent, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, transposition, and variation. The translation technique mostly used is established equivalence. For the shift rendering in source text and target text in Forrest Gump movie subtitles, it is concluded that mostly the data do not occur any shift in promising or offering utterances. Also, in terms of translation equivalence, the dominant kind of translation equivalence in this research is dynamic equivalence.

My aim in this article is to show the usefulness of pragmatics for translation analysis and, tentatively, translation training. The tools and methods developed by pragmatics in the past four decades are particularly useful for the analysis of dialogue and, more generally, face-to-face interaction. Therefore, a source text is chosen which displays a rich and intricate web of personal and social relations, and whose dialogues strike a delicate balance between what is spoken and unspoken, said and implied. Jane Austen’s Emma is compared with three Italian target texts in order to verify if that web and that balance are kept, erased, or altered in translation: the results are, perhaps not surprisingly, mixed, and demonstrate that a knowledge of the pragmatics of face-to-face interaction can be of great advantage to the translator of Emma.

In this study we use a translation corpus of English novels translated into two closely related Celtic languages, Welsh and Breton, as one way of shedding light on the extent to which languages can influence each other over time: Welsh has a long history of contact with English, and Breton with French. Ever since the work of Leonard Talmy (1991, 2000 etc.), linguists have recognized that languages fall into a small number of types with respect to how they prefer to talk about motion events. English is a good exemplar of the satellite-framed type, whereas French exemplifies the verb-framed type. Translation scholars have observed that translating between languages of two different types raises interesting questions (Slobin 2005; Cappelle 2012), and the topic is also of interest from the perspective of language contact: is it possible for a language of one type, in a situation of prolonged and intense bilingualism with a language of another type, to be influenced or perhaps even to change its own rhetorical preferences? The translation corpus provides a body of data which holds constant the starting point – the cue in each case was an English motion event in the source text. We do indeed find that Welsh and Breton have diverged in important ways in terms of their preferences for encoding motion events: Breton is revealed to have moved significantly in the direction of French with respect to these preferences.

We consider the equivalence of source and translation texts. Currently, various ways to achieve the adequacy of texts are being studied, which proves the relevance of this problem. We propose equivalence techniques based on the reproduction of the content side of the text that conveys the author’s meaning. In this case the purpose of the study is to describe the strategies of meaning, the strategies of transformations used by the poet to achieve the adequacy of the source text content. The study applied the methods of comparative and translation analysis. The characteristic features of the translation, the correlation of the concepts “literary text”, “image of the author”, “author’s modality”, “idiostyle of the author” are analyzed in the research. The components of the modeled system and its types are identified and justified. Based on the study, we propose ways to achieve the adequacy of the content side of the text, the equivalence of translations based on the material of Abai’s poetry texts. We substantiate the ways to achieve equivalence of the author’s modality using strategies for transforming formal means of the idiostyle of the source text. We also prove the possibility of using the method of reproducing the source text content through the strategy of meaning and transformation.

The article deals with the interpretation of the translator’s linguistic-creative personality’s nature. The relevance of the problem is due to the fact that the translator’s creative ability issue has not yet been resolved. Nevertheless, some translator’s creative activity’s manifestations are noted in the text of the translation. The objective of the research is to study the ways of the linguistic creativity actualizing of Abay as a translator. The method of translation analysis is used, the strategy of meaning, the strategy of transformation, the strategy of associative thinking and various transformations are described. In the course of the study certain results are obtained: the possibility of manifesting the translator’s creative ability, the translator’s linguistic creativity, his egocentricity; the methods of Abay’s translation activity are comprehended and studied, as well as the strategies applied by him for the creative transformation of the source text are revealed. We pay considerable attention to individual strategies of the translator that contribute to the creative abilities’ realization. It is concluded that manifestations of egocentricity and creativity of the translator in the translation activity process are possible.

<p><em>Using descriptive qualitative method, this paper aims to identify the forms of mitigation of criticizing speech acts in two novels entitled To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman, to identify translation technique used and to describe the quality of translation of expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing in those novels. Data used were linguistic units (words, phrases, clauses, or sentences) represented mitigation types of criticizing speech act. The findings indicate that there were two mitigation types of speech act criticizing, namely external and internal. Expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing from those novels mainly had an equivalent message in Source Text (ST). Translation techniques applied to translate mitigation forms in criticizing speech act imply the translator’s competence in conveying the message of Source Text. Thus, it will impact on shifting meaning or even level of politeness.</em></p>

Abstract Context is a notion that is commonly invoked in many linguistic studies, either with very general reference or, more specifically, in the light of one of a number of research approaches which assign distinct definitions to context, ranging from factors that can be recovered from a text, through social parameters serving as an index for the appropriation of discursive performance, to factors that bring texts into being and give them meaning. This exploratory and descriptive research problematises the notion of context specifically on the grounds of English/Polish translation of corporate documentation processed in company registration proceedings, touching upon factors that are presumed to be discursively relevant in this communicative situation. The study is conducted from the perspective of the sociocultural approach and it adopts the parallel corpus methodology. The author discusses the concept of context on the ground of legal communication and secondarily presents a corpus-based description of the context categories that are idiosyncratic and potentially discursively relevant for the said communicative situation in the cross-linguistic perspective. The contextual variation is tested for its capacity to affect translation performance. The results reveal specific tendencies as regards the distribution patterns in the values corresponding to the investigated context categories. They point to some divergencies in translation output caused by the source text variantivity and they pave the way and directions for further research. Already at this stage the findings may have significant pedagogical value and they constitute a solid starting point for sociolinguistic research on discourse variantivity.

Pre-translation text analysis is an integral part of an efficient translation procedure. In fact, it focuses on collecting intra-textual and extra-textual information on the text under translation. Collecting the intra-textual information is mainly based on a thorough analysis of the source text linguistic peculiarities, whereas the extra-textual information focuses basically on the communicative functional properties of both source and target texts. There exist different approaches towards this procedure and the stages of its accomplishment. Nonetheless, it should be noted that they all lead to a broader spectrum of discourse analysis with its intra-textual and extra-textual parameters and give birth to the translation-oriented pragmatic analysis before initiating translation process itself. The article focuses on the interrelation and interaction of all the mentioned types of analysis (pragmatic analysis, discourse analysis, pre-translation analysis) as an essential requirement for a relevant translation.

The object of this research is the lyrics of the song Avenged Sevenfold Dear God Indonesian Version. This research discussed the translation method of the Indonesian version of the song of Dear God and aimed at finding out the translator's ideology in the translation of the Indonesian version of the song of Dear God in terms of the theory of domestication and foreignization. This study used qualitative approach with qualitative descriptive methods. The theories used in this study were theories from Newmark and Venuti, and also other theories to support this research. In this study, translators were found using the translation method which is oriented to the source text. In addition, the domestication technique looked dominant in the translation of the songs because according to Newmark (1988) this technique was the most free technique to do because it focused on the effectiveness of the target language by updating what has been provided in the source text. Thus, the translation of the Indonesian version of the song Dear God emphasizes the ideology of domestication. The result of this study indicated that translators tend to use translation methods that are oriented to the language of the target text. Additionally, it was found that the domestication technique appeared dominantly in the translation of the Indonesian version of Dear God song

Thanks to Paul Kußmaul, the investigation of translational creativity has made considerable progress. The measurement of creativity, however, has remained a great challenge. The following article presents the results of the measurement of one aspect considered central to the notion of translational creativity, namely the measurement of the ability to depart from the source text (ST) structure by applying creative shifts, i.e., abstracting, modifying or concretising source text ideas in the target text (TT). Sixteen units of analysis from 4 experimental texts translated by 11 students of translation and 5 professional translators each were analysed with the aim of finding out how many of them constituted creative shifts as opposed to mere reproductions of the source text. The results of this sample analysis reveal that there are clear differences between student and professional behaviour and that a certain trend for the development of creative competence can be established. Moreover, these results do not only point to a methodologically interesting approach for analysing complex cognitive constructs, but they also provide a valuable starting point for pedagogic research and application.
