Science communication skills for water coverage. Case study: IHE-SciDev training.

Abstract In May 2017, a workshop was held in Cairo, Egypt, to explore ways in which researchers doing research on topics related to the Nile Basin can work with journalists, aiming for better communication of science through media. The workshop hosted 40 participants, including communication specialists, scientists, academics, policy makers and NGOs' representatives from Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan and international organizations. The workshop concluded that researchers and journalists needed more training in communicating and reporting science. In this respect, IHE Delft Institute partnered with SciDev.Net to develop and run an online course, 'Science Communication Skills for Water Cooperation and Diplomacy', which is described in this chapter. The main objective of the online course that took place between October 2018 and March 2019 was to build the capacity of scientists to engage with the media and effectively communicate science, and to deal with the River Nile as a vehicle of cooperation and development rather than conflict. Overall, the course had largely met the desired objectives. Most respondents greatly appreciated practical exercises, especially those on writing a press release and designing a communication strategy. The training platform was accessible and easy to use for most participants. However, there were areas that did not work as expected, most notably the length of the course.

AbstractIn this paper, I analyze the role of metaphors in public science communication. Specifically, it is a case study of the metaphors for CRISPR/Cas9, a controversial biotechnology that enables scientists to alter the DNA of any organism with unprecedented ease and has raised a number of societal, ethical and legal questions concerning its applications – most notably, on its usage on the human germline. Using a corpus of 600 newspaper articles from the British and German press, I show that there are striking differences in how these two European countries construe CRISPR in public discourse: the British press promotes the image of CRISPR as a word processor that allows scientists to edit the DNA, replacing spelling mistakes with healthy genes, whereas the German press depicts CRISPR as genetic scissors and thereby underlines the risk of mutations after cutting the DNA. I suggest that this contrast reflects differences in the legal frameworks of the respective countries and may influence the attitudes towards emerging biotechnologies among the British and German public.

The research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using blended-learning instruction in improving students’ communication skills at Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada. They were required to take the Test of English for Vocational Students (TEVOCS) and it indicated that there was a gap between listening and speaking ability as presented in the test scores. To support the improvement of both skills, blended-learning instruction was designed and carried out in the forms of online listening activities via Online Listening for Individual Practice (OLIVE) website and offline meeting for speaking activities. The research used experimental research, which referred to the results of pre-test and post-test scores of the group. The participants of the research were 275 students from three departments of Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada; Language, Arts, and Cultural Management department; Engineering department; as well as Economic and Business department academic year 2019/2020. The pre-test and post-test scores show improvement in students’ performance in both skills. The result of the t-test also shows that there is significant improvement after the application of blended-learning instruction.

Bioskop Harewos is a cinema that specialized in visually impaired film viewers in Bandung, Indonesia.  The cinema runs with a traditional and distinct watching process. Some important concepts used in this research are related to communication competences; Visually impaired; and film. Using a qualitative method with constructivism paradigm and case study approach, this research tries to uncover several aspects, such as the communication capabilities of Visual Readers in Bioskop Harewos; the management effort of Bioskop Harewos in enhancing the communication effectiveness between Visual Readers and visually impaired viewers; also the competency of communication skills that required by Visual Readers. The result of this study revealed that the communication skills of Visual Readers in terms of being a prompter to visually impaired viewers were still under expectation. In terms of improving communication skills, the manager of the Bioskop Harewos has made several introductions and pre-viewing activities, yet the result is not as expected. This research also found three key competencies that are a necessity to be possessed by Visual Readers.

This study aims to obtain a description of children’s second language verbal communication skills aged 7-8 years in the activity of buying and selling transactions with foreign tourists. This research was conducted in South Coastal Coast of Central Lombok Regency of West Nusa Tenggara. This research is a qualitative study of case study by Milles and Hubberman model data analysis technique with four stages of interalain analysis (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data display and (4) drawing conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the verbal communication skills of coastal children are obtained partially covering three linguistic components; vocabulary, shipping and grammatical arrangement. The process of acquiring verbal communication skills is influenced by two factors, namely family pressure and self-exposure of children to the coastal tourism environment that encourages children to sell cultural products to foreign tourists. For these purposes, coastal children use two common patterns of second language verbal communication, ie direct verbal communication patterns (spoken word) and indirect verbal communication patterns (writing word). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memeroleh gambaran kemampuan komunikasi verbal bahasa kedua anak usia 7-8 tahun dalam kegiatan transaksi jual beli dengan turis mancanegara. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Pesisir Pantai Selatan Kabupaten Lombok Tengah Nusa Tenggara Barat. Penelitian ini adalah studi kasus dengan teknik analisis data model Milles dan Hubberman dengan empat tahapan analisis yang meliputi (1) pengumpulan data, (2) reduksi data, (3) display data, dan (4) penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan komunikasi verbal anak pesisir pantai cenderung diperoleh secara parsial; mencakup tiga komponen kebahasaan antaralain kosakata, pelafalan  dan susunan gramatikal. Adapun proses pemerolehan kemampuan komunikasi verbal tersebut dipengaruhi oleh dua faktor yaitu tekanan keluarga dan ekspos diri anak pada lingkungan pariwisata pantai yang mendorong anak untuk berjualan produk-produk kebudayaan kepada para turis mancanegara. Untuk kepentingan tersebut, anak pesisir pantai menggunakan dua pola umum komunikasi verbal bahasa kedua, yaitu pola komunikasi verbal langsung (spoken word) dan pola komunikasi verbal tidak langsung (writing word). The purpose of this study was to compare the use of multimedia in the presentation and tutorial of mastery of the concept and process skills in science concerning the immune system. The experimental study was designed with Quasy pre-test post-test, multiple nonequivalent group design. Two treatments for each tutorials and presentations class were employed. Instruments consist of basic concept mastery test, the concept and process skills, questionnaires, and interviews. The result showed that there were differences among the two classes. However, there was no significant difference students process skill in science. Communication skills measured showed no significant difference, while the predictive ability measured showed a significant difference. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah membandingkan penggunaan multimedia secara presentasi terhadap penguasaan konsep dan KPS pada konsep sistem pertahanan tubuh melalui penggunaan multimedia secara tutorial dan presentasi. Penelitian ini merupakan Quasy eksperiment dengan desain pre-test post-test, nonequivalent multiple group design. Digunakan dua kelas perlakuan masing-masing untuk kelas tutorial dan presentasi. Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi pokok uji penguasaan konsep, pokok uji KPS, angket dan wawancara. Hasi menunjukan adanya perbedaan penguasaan konsep pada kedua kelas perlakuan. Akan tetapi perlakuan yang diberikan tidak menunjukan adanya perbedaan terhadap KPS siswa. Kemampuan komunikasi yang diukur menunjukan tidak adanya, sedangkan kemampuan prediksi yang diukur menunjukan adanya perbedaan yang signifikan.

The article focuses on the problematic of Möbius syndrome, a specific description of a child with this syndrome. This is a very rare syndrome. At the time of diagnosing this girl‘s syndrome, doctors in the Czech Republic had almost no experience and had no seen any other child with Möbius syndrome. So she got the intensive care specific for this syndrome just before her third birthday. The aim of our study was to obtain data in motor development, cognitive skills and abilities and especially to obtain information about speech development. In this article, we try to capture the main therapeutic approaches that led to the development of communication skills and promote the development of all language levels.
