Because of the similarity of the AVO console to a desktop flight simulator, a preliminary idea of what aptitude factors would predict success in AVO training might be obtained through a validation study using a desktop flight simulator as the criterion task. In this study, 171 young men and women learned to fly a simulated light aircraft. The participants also took a comprehensive 8-hour battery of computer-based tests. Results indicated that learning was predicted well by general cognitive ability (g)/ working memory (WM) and multilimb coordination. When structural equation modeling was used to distinguish declarative and procedural learning, declarative learning was found to be strongly dependent on g/WM, which is consistent with previous research. That g/WM did not correlate with procedural learning explains why correlations of this ability with learning diminished as instruction moved from a declarative to procedural emphasis. Only multilimb coordination ability was strongly related to procedural learning.

In this study, we repeatedly observed individually marked Brook Trout in a field setting to determine if the bimodal variation in foraging tactics previously observed in young salmonid populations (without distinct morphological differences) is generated by individuals specializing at different foraging tactics. We found significant but low repeatability in several foraging movement parameters. This indicated that while individuals did have tendencies to be sedentary versus highly active, there was considerable variation in foraging activity within individuals. These results suggest that relatively consistent differences among individuals may facilitate selection for specialized morphology and that there may be a heritable component to activity. Erratum included.

Little is known regarding the physiological consequences of the behavioural and morphological differences that result from sexual selection in birds. Male and female Svalbard rock ptarmigans ( Lagopus muta hyperborea ) exhibit distinctive behavioural differences during the breeding season. In particular, males continuously compete for and defend territories in order to breed successfully, placing large demands on their locomotor system. Here, we demonstrate that male birds have improved locomotor performance compared with females, showing both a lower cost of locomotion (CoL) and a higher top speed. We propose that the observed sex differences in locomotor capability may be due to sexual selection for improved male performance. While the mechanisms underlying these energetic differences are unclear, future studies should be wary when pooling male and female data.

I used spectrophotometric, chromatographic, and chemical means to establish that rhodoxanthin, a 3-keto-retrodehydro carotenoid, was the only red pigment in the head feathers of the Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana). In contrast, the red head and body feathers of a close relative, the Scarlet Tanager (P. olivacea), exhibited several 4-keto-carotenoids. Other tanagers and emberizids also displayed 4-keto-carotenoids. The deposition of presumed canary xanthophylls and phaeomelanins differed quantitatively between the Western Tanager and other tanagers belonging to the genus Piranga. Uniquely among the Piranga spp. examined, the head feathers of the Western Tanager had flattened bards without barbules. Partly because the head colors of the Western and Scarlet tanagers were indistinguishable either in the hand or when examined by reflectance spectrophotometry, I excluded selection for a variant color as the basis for the observed chemical and morphological differences. Biochemical costs, including putative costs associated with the endogenous production of 4-keto-carotenoids, could have led to the conversion in the Western Tanager to an available dietary pigment. This tanager, unlike the other species studied, has access to an abundant source of rhodoxanthin in the coniferous forests of western North America. The pigment changes in the Western Tanager could have taken place with minimal effect on head color.

The synthetic androgen danazol, is an isoxazol derivative of ethisterone. It is utilized in the treatment of endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, and has a potential use as a contraceptive. A study was designed to evaluate the ultrastructural changes associated with danazol therapy in a rat model. The preliminary investigation of the distal segment of the rat uterine horn was undertaken as part of a larger study intended to elucidate the effects of danazol on the female reproductive tract.Cross-sections (2-3 mm in length) of the distal segment of the uterine horn from sixteen Sprague-Dawley rats were prepared for SEM. Ten rats in estrus served as controls and six danazol treated rats were noted to have alterations of the estrus cycle i.e. a lag in cycle phase or noncycling patterns. Specimens were fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde in 0.05M phosphate buffer containing CaCl2 at pH 7.0-7.4 and chilled to 4°C. After a brief wash in distilled water, specimens were passed through a graded series of ethanol, critical point dryed in CO2 from absolute ethanol, and coated with 6nm Au. Observations were made with an IS1-40 SEM operated at 15kV.

Preliminary investigation has indicated similarity in hepatic ultrastructural morphology in nutritional deprivation, and cyanide induced hepatic necrosis. Analysis of hepatic tissue has indicated disruption of intracellular membranes, specifically, reduction in rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) mitochondrial integrity, and glycogen stores. An increase in smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) portion was observed.To further investigate the apparent equivalence of necrotic morphology, ultrastructura1ly, BDF1 mice were subjected to senescence, nutritional deprevation, potassium cyanide (KCN) induced toxemia, and acetaminophen induced toxemia. Controls were utilized to ellucidate non-necrotic hepatocellular normals. U1trastructura1 investigation of controls (Fig. 1) shows densely granular RER, abundant glycogen stores, and morphologically normal mitochondria. Subjects with acetaminophen induced necrosis exhibit reduced normal RER with increased levels of dialated, vesicular RER in apparent conversion to SER (Fig. 2), loss of mitochondrial integrity, and glycogen store reduction. Senescent subjects exhibit a pronounced increase in SER and loss of glycogen store. (Fig. 3). Investigation of the senescent SER at high magnification (Fig. 5) indicates that the SER is arising from degranulating and vesiculating RER.

KeponeR (decachlorooctahydro-1,3,4-metheno-2H-cyclobuta[cd]pentalen-2-one) is an insecticide effective against ants and roaches. It can cause severe toxicity in fishes, birds, rodents and man. Prominent effects include hepatic lipid deposition and hypertrophy, impairment of reproductive capacity and neurological disorders. Mitochondrial oligomycin-sensitive Mg2+-ATPase is also inhibited. The present study is a preliminary investigation of tissue ultrastructural changes accompanying physiological signs of acute toxicity, which after two days treatment include: pronounced hypersensitivity and tremor, various degrees of anorexia and adipsia, and decreased weight gain.Three different series of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (Charles River or CD-I) were treated by intubation with Kepone in corn oil at a dose of 50 mg per kg for 3 successive days or at 200 ppm in food for 8 days. After ether anesthesia, rats were immediately perfused via a cannula in the left ventricle with 4% p-formaldehyde and 0.5% glutaraldehyde in Millonig's phosphate buffer at pH 7.2 for 20-30 min at 22°C.

Culicoides variipennis (Coquillett) is probably the most economically important species of biting midge in the U.S. due to its involvement in the transmission of bluetongue (BT) disease of sheep, cattle and ruminant wildlife, and epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) of deer. Proposals have been made to recognize the eastern and western populations of this insect vector as distinct species. Others recommend use of the term “variipennis complex” until such time that the necessary biosystematic studies have been made to determine the genetic nature and/or minute morphological differences within the population structure over the entire geographic range of the species. Increasingly, students of ootaxonomy are relying on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess chorionic features. This study was undertaken to provide comparative chorionic data for the C. variipennis complex.Culicoides variipennis eggs were collected from a laboratory colony maintained in Laramie, Wyoming.

The most frequently occuring abnormality of the male genital system in mammals is the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. The reasons for abdominal or inguinal retention of testes could be anatomic malformation, faulty development or hormone imbalance.Cryptorchidism has been associated with either greatly reduced or absent spermatogenesis (Kaueakami et al, 1984), and being a source of neoplasia. According to Stick (1980), germinal carcinoma cells have been believed to be the cause of teratomas in equine cryptorchid testicles. Neoplasia has been reported in descended testes of unilateral cryptorchid patients (Martin et al, 1981).No distinction has been made in relating the problem of cryptorchid testes to inguinal or abdominal retention. The purpose of this study is to record the morphological differences between inguinal and abdominal cryptorchid testes as an aid in diagnosis and prognosis.

The δ phase is a Zn-rich intermetallic, having a composition range of ∼ 86.5 - 92.0 atomic percent Zn, and is stable up to 665°C. The stoichiometry of the δ phase has been reported as FeZn7 and FeZn10 The deviation in stoichiometry can be attributed to variations in alloy composition used by each investigator. The structure of the δ phase, as determined by powder x-ray diffraction, is hexagonal (P63mc or P63/mmc) with cell dimensions a = 1.28 nm, c = 5.76 nm, and 555±8 atoms per unit cell. Later work suggested that the layer produced by hot-dip galvanizing should be considered as two distinct phases which are characterized by their morphological differences, namely: the iron-rich region with a compact appearance (δk) and the zinc-rich region with a columnar or palisade microstructure (δp). The sub-division of the δ phase was also based on differences in diffusion behavior, and a concentration discontinuity across the δp/δk boundary. However, work utilizing Weisenberg photographs on δ single crystals reported that the variation in lattice parameters with composition was small and hence, structurally, the δk phase and the δp phase were the same and should be thought of as a single phase, δ. Bastin et al. determined the average cell dimensions to be a = 1.28 nm and c = 5.71 nm, and suggested that perhaps some kind of ordering process, which would not be observed by x-ray diffraction, may be responsible for the morphological differences within the δ phase.
