The public as a communication system

The public can be considered as a communication field with three main actors: speakers, communicators, and the audience. The characteristics of these actors and the features of their interaction constitute the social infrastructure of public knowledge production. There is both theoretical reason and practical evidence to suggest that the mass media tend to construct science stories in terms of spectacular events, simple causes and unambiguous moral positions. These tendencies create some elementary problems where `science meets the public'. By `popularization' the distance between the communication systems of science and of the public can be reduced but not eliminated.

Pangolins are poorly known species despite their high demand in the illegal international trade.  This study has been conducted to analyze the awareness of Filipinos towards the endemic Philippine Pangolin Manis culionensis and how much they would be willing to contribute to its conservation.  The respondents were selected from the social media reach of the researchers.  The results showed that most of the respondents know about the pangolin from mass media such as news from television.  Social media is also a factor in their awareness of the animal.  They unanimously agreed that pangolins are important ecologically rather than its medicinal value in the illegal market trade.  Overall, the respondents showed a high degree of knowledge of pangolins and have favorable attitudes towards its conservation.

This article examines the social life of PFAS contamination (a class of several thousand synthetic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and maps the growing research in the social sciences on the unique conundrums and complex travels of the “forever chemical.” We explore social, political, and cultural dimensions of PFAS toxicity, especially how PFAS move from unseen sites into individual bodies and into the public eye in late industrial contexts; how toxicity is comprehended, experienced, and imagined; the factors shaping regulatory action and ignorance; and how PFAS have been the subject of competing forms of knowledge production. Lastly, we highlight how people mobilize collectively, or become demobilized, in response to PFAS pollution/ toxicity. We argue that PFAS exposure experiences, perceptions, and responses move dynamically through a “toxicity continuum” spanning invisibility, suffering, resignation, and refusal. We off er the concept of the “toxic event” as a way to make sense of the contexts and conditions by which otherwise invisible pollution/toxicity turns into public, mass-mediated, and political episodes. We ground our review in our ongoing multisited ethnographic research on the PFAS exposure experience.

The article is devoted to the issue of communication strategy in the mass media and PR-departments in organizations of various orientations. The authors draw attention to the existing practice of similar, repetitive messages that fill the information space. This complicates the perception of information by the public and makes this process boring and uninteresting. As one way of solving the problem, it is proposed to focus on unique information offers in communications. The authors believe that a wide potential audience is not aware of truly unique information offers of the mass media or PR departments of companies and organizations. A unique information offer is lost in the conditions of the growing tradition to consume news information from the social media feed, subscribing to a large number of public pages, unless these offers are made by popular and well-known companies. For instance, the authors of the article study unique information offers made by the media service of a football club in March-June 2020 in the context of the coronavirus crisis and the absence of matches. This is one of the most popular Russian clubs, well-known even to those Russians who are not football fans. Moreover, the authors also examine the unique information offers of a beauty company, with some of them not directly related to their products. As a result, theauthors suggest that it is worth advertising not only products on external resources, but also unique information offers directly.

ABSTRACTA Public Perception towards Benefits of the Landscape of Mangrove Center Tuban Tuban Regency - East Java ProvinceThis research was motivated by the problems that are often experienced by the manager of Mangrove Center Tuban changing the function of the region in this area which is the Environmental Educatian Center. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach with case studies in order to capture the phenomena that exist in the field then studied more deeply. The highest perception of knowledge of the benefits and advantages of mangrove forests in Mangrove Center Tuban rated public of the environmental aspects of the lowest 40% and the perception that the social aspects of the environment of 3%. Highest perception Mangrove Center Tuban by 40% of respondents perceived as the cultivation of mangrove and lowest perception is envorinmental education center at 14%. The highest perception of respondents stated assess the mangrove forests of the aspects of a life by 63% and the lowest was the respondent state on the features and functions of mangrove forests of 3%. The highest expression of respondents said getting information from the mass media by 37% and the lowest statement from the manager only by 29%. The conclusion of this study is the public perception of mangrove forests Mangrove Center Tuban is people just look at the circumstances that they see without looking for information first.

ABSTRACT The author of this essay argues that the success or failure of development depends on the availability of technology. The invention and development of new technologies are instrumental in changing the way people live, the way people communicate and the way people respond to their environment. However, despite the advantages of new technologies, the problem of access remains an enduring one. In South Africa, access to new communications and information technologies is limited to a few people owing to the high costs of these technologies. Therefore, the mere acquisition of new technology may not help that much to end the underdevelopment of many parts of the world, including South Africa. Mjwacu claims that the imbalance or gap that the use of new technology and the failure to development the social infrastructure needed to use this technology can lead directly to an infringement of people's right of access to the media. She argues that the emphasis needs to be placed on establishing community-based communication systems in countries such as South Africa to advance both their technological and social development.

New digital video technologies are transforming how people everywhere document, publish, and consume information. As knowledge production becomes increasingly oriented towards digital/visual modes of expression, scholars will need new approaches for conducting and publishing research. The purpose of this article is to advance a systematic approach to scholarship calledanalytic filmmaking.I argue that when filming and editing are guided by rigorous social scientific standards, digital video can be a compelling medium for illustrating causal processes, communicating theory-driven explanations, and presenting new empirical findings. I furthermore argue that analytic films offer policymakers and the public an effective way to glean insights from and engage with scholarly research. Throughout the article I draw on examples from my work to demonstrate the principles of analytic filmmaking in practice and to point out how analytic films complement written scholarship.

This paper develops a new digital communication scheme based on using a unified chaotic system and an adaptive state observer. The proposed communication system basically consists of five important elements: signal modulation, chaotic encryption, adaptive state observer, chaotic decryption, and signal demodulation. A sequence of digital signals will be delivered from the transmitter to the receiver through a public channel. It is rather reasonable that if the number of signals delivered on the public channel is fewer, then the security of such communication system is more guaranteed. Therefore, in order to achieve this purpose, a state observer will be designed and its function is to estimate full system states only by using the system output signals. In this way, the signals delivered on the public channel can be reduced mostly. According to these estimated state signals, the original digital sequences are then retrieved completely. Finally, experiment results are provided to verify the applicability of the proposed communication system.

Abstract Epistemological hierarchies in the social sciences stipulate that sedentarism is naturalised as a normality, and that mobility is viewed as a deviation. This article sets out to propose an analytical framework that takes the analysis beyond this kind of nationalized knowledge production, and to empirically show the gains of de-nationalized frameworks for analysis of social protection and dynamics of in-/equality in the globalised society. I will do this relying on the empirical example of the public old-age pension scheme in Sweden.

ABSTRAKPenyebaran virus Covid-19 telah menjadi pandemi di Indonesia, menyebabkan bencana bagi masyarakat dan mengakibatkan kematian diseluruh dunia. Berbagai dampak yang terjadi seperti adanya perubahan pada bidang sosial, bidang ekonomi dan bidang psikologis. Dampak pada bidang psikologis diantaranya seperti orang yang merasakan cemas, takut, depresi, khawatir akan tertular hingga adanya keinginan bunuh diri, gangguan perasaan tersebut harus dikelola dengan baik agar tidak memberikan dampak pada kesehatan mental. Tujuan pelaksanaan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat tentang kesehatan mental di masa pandemi Covid-19. Metode yang digunakan adalah penyuluhan kesehatan dengan mengunakan media poster. Hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan ini yaitu masyarakat paham akan isi pesan yang tercantum di dalam poster dan adanya keinginan untuk mengubah sikap untuk tetap menjaga kesehatan mentalnya di masa pandemi Covid-19. Kesimpulannya bahwa kegiatan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kesadaran masyarakat untuk menjaga kesehatan mental di masa  pandemi Covid-19. Kata kunci: kesehatan mental; pandemi; covid-19. ABSTRACTThe Covid-19 virus has become a pandemic in Indonesia. Causing harm for the community and resulting death throughout the world. Various effects that occur such as changes in the social, economic, and psychological fields. Psychological disorders that felt include feeling sad, fearful, depressed, worring about being infected, and suicidal ideation have an influence on mental health. These feelings disorders must be managed properly so that they do not have an impact on mental health. The purpose of this activity is to increase public knowledge about mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic.  The method used is health education with poster media. The result is that the public understands the contents of the message contained in the poster and there is a desire to change attitudes to maintain their mental health. The conclusion is that this activity can improve public knowledge and awareness to increasing mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: mental health; pandemic; covid-19.

Until recently, the world of the British barbershop singer was a self-enclosed community whose existence went largely unrecognised both by musicians involved in other genres and by the public at large. In the last few years this has started to change, chiefly due to the participation of barbershop choruses in the televised competition ‘Sainsbury's Choir of the Year’. Encouraged by the success of Shannon Express in 1994, many other choruses entered the 1996 competition, four of them reaching the televised semi-finals, and two the finals. During this increased exposure, it became apparent that television commentators had little idea of what to make of barbershoppers, indeed regarded them as a peculiar, and perhaps rather trivial, breed of performer. This bafflement is not surprising given the genre's relative paucity of exposure either in the mass media or in the musical and musicological press; the plentiful articles written by barbershoppers about their activity and its meanings are almost exclusively addressed to each other, to sustain the community rather than integrate it into wider musical life. The purpose of this paper, however, is not to follow the theme of these intra-community articles in arguing that barbershop harmony should actually be regarded as a serious and worthy art, or to explain to a bewildered world what this genre is actually about; rather, it aims to explore the way that barbershop singers theorise themselves and their activity to provide a case study in the relationship between social and musical values. That is, I am not writing as an apologist for a hitherto distinctly insular practice, but exploiting that very insularity as a means to pursue a potentially very broad question within a self-limited field of enquiry.
