The main purpose of the current study is the generalization and further development of the Modigliani–Miller theory taking into account one of the conditions of the real functioning of companies for the case of paying income tax with an arbitrary frequency (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual payments). While a return is not required more than once a year, businesses may be responsible for filing estimated taxes based on profits earned. This requirement is dependent on showing a profit. For example, sole proprietors must file estimated taxes on profits quarterly, on the 15th day of April, June, September and January. In Russia, tax on profit payments could be made annually, quarterly, or monthly. We suppose, that more frequent payment of income tax impacts on all main financial indicators of the company and leads to some important consequences. We use analytical and numerical methods: we derive all main formulas of the modified Modigliani–Miller theory theoretically and then use them to obtain all main financial indicators of company and their dependences on different parameters by MS Excel. We show that: (1) all Modigliani–Miller theorems, statements and formulas change; (2) all main financial indicators, such as the weighted average cost of capital (WACC), company value, V, and equity cost, ke, depend on the frequency of tax on profit payments; (3) in the case of income tax payments more than once per year (at p ≠ 1), as takes place in practice, the WACC, company value, V and equity cost, and ke start depend on debt cost, kd, while in ordinary (classical) Modigliani–Miller theory all these values do not depend on kd; (4) obtained results allow a company to choose the number of payments of tax on profit per year (of course, within actual tax legislation): more frequent payments of income tax are beneficial for both parties, for the company and for the tax regulator.

This study aims to examine and explain the effect of company size and leverage on firm value with profitability as a moderating variable in Real Estate and Property companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the period 2016-2018. This type of research is explanatory research, testing classical assumptions, and analyzed using a moderated regression analysis, and using the t test. The number of samples is 32 companies, and the sampling method used is purposive sampling. This research variable consists of company size and leverage as an independent variable, company value as the dependent variable, and profitability as a moderating variable. The analysis showed that partially company size and leverage had no significant effect on firm value, profitability had a negative effect on firm value and profitability weakened the effect of company size on firm value and profitability strengthened the effect of leverage on firm value. In this study, it can provide implications for a company to consider factors of company size, leverage, and profitability, and can also be used as a reference by other companies in business strategy, understand aspects of the industry they are involved in, and pay more attention to the development of the environment that can affect the company's business so that it can increase the value of the company.

Purpose Many indicators attempt to measure the social performance of a company from different perspectives. Grounded in stakeholder theory, this paper aims to propose capitalising the economic value distributed annually to society over a period of time, hereafter called a firm’s cumulative contribution to society (CCS). This can be done by including everything that stakeholders value; for example, payments of taxes, remuneration of employees, payments to suppliers and creditors, donations, dividends, research and development expenses and efforts to improve the environment. Design/methodology/approach First, this paper makes a methodological proposal about how to calculate the CCS and discusses potentials and shortcomings. Then, a set of hypotheses are formulated about the firm characteristics and country attributes that make the most positive contribution to society such as business models, financial performance, a country’s human development, income equality and the extent of its shadow economy. The authors also argue that a company that originally contributes to society will continue to do so because of the structural inertia faced by organisations. The hypotheses were validated with an empirical study conducted with a sample of 9,276 new-born European companies. Findings The most significant contributors to society are large, profitable companies, which are leveraged but solvent, with high asset turnover and high-profit margins and which are productive and pay high wages. Unfortunately, this win-win situation describes a small percentage of the explained variance, which can explain why social and financial performance sometimes do not go hand-in-hand. The paper identifies features of other types of companies that contribute to society, suggesting criteria for socially responsible investors. Country development favours the cumulative contribution that firms make to society. Research limitations/implications Most accounting systems do not collect all the information necessary to calculate a refined version of the indicator such as percentage of purchases from local suppliers, percentage of salaries for executives and disabled employees and percentage of financing from socially responsible financial entities. The authors encourage modification of the accounting systems to include those aspects. Practical implications This paper identifies several types of companies that contribute the most to society from a modest set of financial indicators. Socially responsible investors can estimate their contribution to society, devising new investment criteria. Social implications The paper identifies several types of companies that contribute the most to society from a modest set of financial indicators. Socially responsible investors can estimate their contribution to society, devising new investment criteria. Originality/value The paper makes two contributions, one methodological and the other empirical. By applying a financial methodology, the authors propose to capitalise the contributions of a company over a period of time. The empirical study identifies both firm and country characteristics that explain CCS.

We study the effect of political connection (PC) on company value in an environment where low PC is due to better institutions and not confounded by favorable social/cultural factors. We find that in Singapore, the only country that fits this description, PC in general adds little to the value of a company. However, in industries that are subject to more stringent government regulations, PC appears to be somewhat important. Robustness checks show that alternative PC variables give rise to similar results, and the addition of control variables do not drastically change the findings. Politically connected firms have higher managerial ownership and tend to be smaller than non-PC firms, rendering them more susceptible to poorer governance practices. We show that the presence of politically connected directors somewhat neutralizes such potential negative effects. PC firms are associated with good governance practices such as nonduality in their chairman and chief executive officer positions and fewer executive directors.

Company value is investors' perception of the level of success of a company. The level of success of a company is usually often associated with stock prices. High stock prices make the value of the company also increased. In this study, sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method. For the data analysis technique the researchers used multiple linear regression analysis techniques. From the results of hypothesis testing that has been done, it shows that profitability, leverage and income smoothing simultaneously affect the value of the company. When viewed commercially, the results of hypothesis testing profitability variables have an influence on firm value. Furthermore, the results of the analysis of leverage variables also have an influence on firm value variables. The fourth analysis shows that the income smoothing variable affects the value of the company. Based on research that has been done, it is suggested, for investors before investing can see the value of the company first as a consideration made before investing.
