Abstract Elderly Pondok Village (EPV) is viewed as a feasible accommodation that provides religious teaching and learning with residential facilities for ageing communities. Currently, Muslim retirees seem to prefer pondok system as one of the choices to spend their time after retirement. With the growing interest in this system, a comprehensive EPV model is crucial to meet the needs and such model will provide a dynamic environment for aging population. Many debates and issues of EPV have taken place in which issues such as lack of energy efficiency, safety, comfort, design for flexibility and social sustainability requirements were highlighted. To provide adequate, good quality accommodation, there is an urgent need for EPV to provide a living environment that fully addresses the sustainable requirements including social needs. Therefore, the aim of this review is to identify the important facilities to be included in the EPV and to check the conformity of the facilities to cultural sustainability and Islamic guidelines. This paper presents the review of findings on sustainable requirements based on synthesising sustainable pondok/retirement village model across the globe. The discussions highlighted some important considerations to include in the facilities provided for Muslim retirees. The results of the study indicated a few significant factors to consider which will foster cultural sustainability. Implementation of the suggested facilities will support the cultural sustainability according to the stipulated Islamic perspectives.

A variety of challenges in online training are found in numerous learning environments such as cultural background, accessibility, technology, learning content and so on. In the developed or western societies, the online training has been developing in a stable way for decades, while numerous typical obstacles seem to be visible in developing countries including student support, flexibility, teaching and learning activities, access, academic confidence, localization and attitudes (Andersson, 2008). These difficulties are not excluded in the context of online English training system (OETS) at Ho Chi Minh City Open University (HCMCOU). Although this institution ever makes effort to limit these possible challenges for ages, plenty of impactful issues leading to serious difficulties of OETS also obviously exist. Hence, to fully explore the key factors that cause greater barriers in this training system, a qualitative on traditions of bioghaphy and grounded theory method was applied. The qualitative data is to be collected from the responses on openended questionaire sent for 30 online English majors and indirect interviews with 5 salient learners were also conducted. The findings show that some minor limitations of learners such as negative learning habits, willpower shortage and neglected learning perception lead to greater barriers of online English training.

Using the methodology of overdetermination, class process of surplus labor as the entry point and socially determined need of food security, we deliver an alternative class-focused rendition of the public distribution system (PDS) in India. We first surmise our theoretical framework to infer that the overdetermined and contradictory relation of class and social needs matter for PDS. Beyond the reasoning of being pro-poor, fair, or wasteful, we deploy this framework to reinterpret the formation of Indian PDS in the 1960s. Its demonstration requires revisiting the historical condition that shaped capital’s passive revolution through the post-independence Indian state and its subsequent crisis arising out of the contradictions and conflicts in the class-need space. We argue that PDS signals a case of success and not failure of capitalism.

This book chapter presents, a review of the literature from 2004-2014 regarding the various models of virtual worlds used in foreign language teaching and learning, the impact of virtual world learning environments and the implications of language teaching. The study being reported aims to address the following questions: (1) What are the models of virtual worlds used in language learning instruction in K-12 and higher education; (2) How do VWLEs impact language learning in terms of motivation, communicative competency, intercultural competency, collaborative competency, constructivist learning, and sociocultural competency; and (3) What are the implications of using VWLEs in foreign language teaching and learning? Results indicate that social context and task-based learning enhanced language learners' participation and motivations. Findings also indicate that consistent use of interactional strategies encouraged learners to engage in the tasks and stay motivated. The study suggested that a VWLE offers a motivating, engaging, and multi-dynamic environment for language learners.

The progressive digitization of society is irreversibly changing education. Specialists in teaching methodologies are having to address questions raised by the digital revolution in schools and develop appropriate training for teachers. This article responds to this revolution by proposing that smartphones be used to support digital teaching and learning processes in extracurricular learning settings. Specifically, it presents digital city tours as potential tools designed to help learners to explore the urban space integral to their living environment, recognize its historical dimension, and work on this dimension by developing digital narratives. The smartphone is understood here as a tool that makes it possible for learners to experience history and that encourages them to develop learning skills.

Social security is an element of the broadly understood state security system. A centralized approach to managing social needs does not take into account the local and regional differentiation of a population’s preferences, and, as a result, does not allocate resources in an optimal fashion. Decentralisation contributes to improving efficiency by way of more effective adaptation of public services to social needs, which is achieved by gaining a wider and deeper knowledge about the needs of local communities. Greater power of local authority bodies inspires innovative solutions and stimulates activity and competition between territorial units. It contributes to the rational allocation of resources at the disposal of local authorities, which leads to the conclusion that they are dominant with regard to exercising the social function of the state.

With many developed countries experiencing the aging of the population, older people play a large role in contributing to environmental problems but also to environmental solutions. The purpose of this research is to understand the awareness and behavior of current older people living in retirement villages towards sustainability development. To achieve this, a sustainability literacy survey was conducted with 65 older residents of a private retirement village located 10 Km outside the Brisbane, Australia’s central business district (CBD). Most of residents recognized the importance of environment protection and would like to lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. In addition, the majority were willing to pay higher prices for a living environment with sustainable features. The importance of positive social communications was emphasized with most residents having established good relationships with others in the village. The findings provide an important insight into consumer perspectives regarding the sustainable features that should and can be incorporated into the village planning and development.

An M-unit system in dynamic environment with operational and repair times following phase-type distributions and incorporating geometrical processes is considered. A general Markov process with vectorial states is the appropriate structure for modeling this system. A transient analysis is performed for this complex system and the transition probabilities are calculated. Some performance measures of general interest in the study of systems are obtained using an algorithmic approach, and applied to G-out-of-M systems. A numerical example is presented and the transient performance measures are calculated and compared with the stationary ones. This paper extends previous reliability systems, that can be considered as particular cases of this one. Throughout the paper, the mathematical expressions are given by algorithmic methods, that emphasized the utility of phase-type distributions in the analysis of lifetime data.

This essay is about social aspects of sustainability in sloyd in Swedish compulsory school, against the backdrop that this knowledge area is perceived as difficult to teach by teachers. Drawing on previous research from differing fields, implications for teaching and learning are discussed in relation to students’ emotional experiences and to the role of materials and sloyd artefacts in social interaction. While interaction between the student and the material/artefact is at the core of sloyd, education for social sustainability, as a new challenge, requires new approaches for teaching.

Vocational High School Number 3 Mukomuko was the school that has given assistance for the learners. It was by exempting learners from paying committee charge monthly, it called Bantuan Komite Sekolah (BKS). In order to give motivation for the learners who was unfortunate to keep staying at the school, so it can make the learners to keep going on teaching and learning process (KBM). This research used Topsis method by collecting data for the prospective scholarship learners as many as 20 learners by categorizes were parents’ revenue, the total numbers of duties, the distance of residence, the average score of report and the condition of living environment. The result of try out from 20 learners who was obtain BKS by using Topsis Method showed that there were 18 learners who were significant to obtain scholarship by validity score was 90%. It was be a sample, before Topsis Method was used and the data was reliable after using Topsis Method. The development of supporting decision application system used Topsis Method that was getting in more accurated qualification. Futhermore, this system can help the school in constructing decisions to get the result be more advantageous in determining for the next BKS recipients.
