Abstract This text formulates a set of coherent and realistic proposals for the after delignification period in Western Macedonia. The aim of these proposals is to avoid the economic decline and poverty of the Region. The first part, based on the literature and the best available practices, the proposals for the necessary environmental restoration of mine lands. Concerning the economic rehabilitation of the Region, a mix of actions referring to the whole production chain: from the primary to the tertiary sector of the economy, is proposed. The action that is expected to enhance the production potential of this region is the creation of branded products, under a single brand name, which will voluntarily bring together, in the context of synergies, the agri-food and manufacturing activities. Overall, it is estimated that the deadline set for de-lignification in 2023, is too early to start all those activities that will allow the economic transition of the Region, and to exclude the possibility of a massive wave of migration. For this reason, the extension of de-lignification, for a period of time within the European objectives to achieve the target of climate neutrality in 2050, are proposed.

Considering the current conditions of fuel, the objective of this study was to evaluate the energy balance and Carbon Footprint of biodiesel from jatropha oil, considering the dynamism of the production chain. For this, after the creation of the dynamic outline, based on the linear idea, the system is divided into subsystems and the data were analyzed by means of Ecoinvent and PAS databases. Then, the activities of each subsystem were listed and had relevant information to obtain the search results. The results reinforce the potential of Jatropha biodiesel, illustrated by low emission compared to soy and castor bean biodiesel. As for the energy balance, Jatropha has a favorable relationship with respect to castor and rapeseed, with disadvantage compared to soybeans. Thus, the jatropha has shown interesting results compared with some alternative, and as it is an inevitable replacement, given the decline in oil supply, this oilseed prove increasingly promising.

This paper conducts panel analysis to evaluate the effects of a structural economic shift from the industrial to the tertiary sector, a reduction in industrial overcapacity, and improvements in energy efficiency on energy consumption using data for 30 Chinese provinces from 1995 to 2015. We find that, at the national level, the structural shift to the tertiary sector, the reduction in cement and steel production, and the increase in energy efficiency in the industrial sector all have statistically significantly negative effects. We also divide the sample into three geographic and economic regions to evaluate regional differences. We find that the gross domestic product (GDP) share of the tertiary sector shows its greatest impact on reducing energy consumption in the eastern region, a decline in heavy industry production would reduce energy demand more in the central region, and improvement in industrial electricity efficiency would also help reduce energy consumption the most in eastern China. We also forecast energy consumption in China will reach 4.8–4.9 billion tonnes of coal equivalent (tce) in 2020 and further grow to 5.0–5.4 billion tce in 2030.

Do patents facilitate or frustrate innovation? Our starting point for exploring this question is the recognition that patent systems are products of battles over the economic surplus created by innovation. The features of these systems take shape as contending interests at different points in the production chain seek advantage in any way they can, and consequently they are riven with imperfections. The most interesting intellectual issue is not how patent systems are imperfect, but why historically US-style patent systems with all their imperfections have come to dominate other methods of encouraging inventive activity. The essays that follow this introduction suggest that the creation of a tradable but temporary property right facilitates the transfer of technological knowledge and thus fosters a highly productive decentralized ecology of inventors and firms.

This paper examines the dynamics of economic change in the City of Paterson, New Jersey, from the time of its founding in the late eighteenth century to 1990, with emphasis on the post-1945 era. Analysis shows that from the time of its founding to the first half of the twentieth century, Paterson experienced a period of economic growth followed by economic decline in the 1960s, characterized by major changes in its principal industries of cotton, locomotives, and silk. Economic growth in Paterson up to the early part of the twentieth century is attributable to several locational factors, including the availability of water resources, transportation, labor supply, and markets. Its decline in the post-1945 era is attributable to a combination of local, national, and global economic factors including periods of depression, labor discord, product substitution, decentralization of economic activities, and deindustrialization. Economic decline resulted in a high rate of unemployment, poverty, and urban decay. The most significant effort to reverse urban decline in the city is the urban enterprise zone (UEZ) program. The impacts of this program on economic growth in the city, however, remain inconclusive.

Using the description of the importance of the floriculture sector and contrasting the identification of the behavior of brand name and generic products in the flower sector, future scenarios were identified for the creation of strategies of market permanence and positioning for brand name agrochemical products. In this case, representatives with broad experience in the floriculture sector of La Sabana de Bogota D.C. were selected, with whom the state of and possible projections for agrochemical products for the sector were evaluated with a prospective methodology. As a result, strategies were generated for achieving market permanence and positioning for brand name agrochemical products.

Purpose – The integrated purpose of the libraries’ communication plan in general is to create and accomplish scientific events aiming, first of all, at covering the extensive demand for the scientific conferences. Their primary objective is to raise the prestigious brand name of their organisation, which constitutes the organizing authority. At the same time, this authority, except for its non-profit charitable profile, aims to financial gains by attracting participants for its sustainability. Furthermore, these academic events have contributed to the utmost dissemination of the library’s brand name to an expanding mass of people to the extent of attracting new visitors (Broady-Preston and Lobo, 2011). One of the qualitative academic events, among others, is the creation of academic-nature events, whose following-up is blocked by a multitude of financial barriers according to the new visitors’ viewpoint. Considering the economic crisis, the purpose of this paper is the creation of interesting, in the science of library, online events, just like the online conferences (Broady-Preston and Swain, 2012). Design/methodology/approach – This paper highlights the advantages of the dynamic modelling of systems aimed at developing a successful online conference. In this research, the authors have used the science of design and the research methodology for testing the concept of modeling. Findings – This paper examines the interface among several dimensions for the development of dynamic models. The validity and usefulness of those models in the process of decision-making has been confirmed by the usage of dynamic models in various sectors. Originality/value – This paper applies the system and the concepts of dynamic modelling, which are pioneering elements as to their nature and evolution.
