Abstract Standards for processing fishery products are intended to provide quality assurance and safety for fishery products. The implementation of standards involves various parties, including the governments, business actors, and consumers. Regulation on the application of standards need to be issued so that it can provide optimal benefits in accordance with the objectives of the standard. This study aimed to review the regulations regarding the application of standards governing the implementation of a quality assurance system and food safety in fishery products. This study is a policy review on legal and documents related to processed fish products. The application of standards is to provide an understanding of the methods, to practices how to produce fishery products in accordance with the requirements and food safety concerns, as well as to meet the regulatory requirements. The standards for fishery processing products include regulations in several ministries which include SKP, PMMT/HACCP, Distribution License, Halal, and SNI. The standards are enforced by some institutions that have the potential for over-regulation and duplication. The regulations need to be simplified and integrated to hinder fishery business yet improving the business ecosystem. The Government stipulated the CK Law and its derivative regulations to simplify the regulations without ignoring the food safety requirements and ensuring a conducive business environment. After being fully implemented, the effectiveness of the CK Law needs to be reviewed for improving the implementation of regulations, particularly for fish and fishery products in the future.

Peer-to-Peer Accommodation services (P2PA) are mushrooming worldwide due to the expansion of digital services and Internet access. Since P2PA services operate fully online, small establishments utilise disruptive technology and surpass traditional hoteliers by surprise. In the first part of this article, we examine the problems caused by P2PA for ‘playing on an uneven field’, avoiding necessary taxes, skipping regulatory and safety requirements, and causing loss of tranquillity to the neighbourhood. Due to these problems, a proposal was moved by the government to regulate P2PA in Malaysia via a self-regulatory guideline, as analysed in the second part of the article. However, due to its non-binding status, the proposal will arguably lead to irregularities in regulatory mechanisms at the state level when enforced. P2PA hosts were asked to comply with regulatory requirements similar to hoteliers, but the platform providers have arguably avoided any P2PA related liability nor responsibility as they operate offshore. Applying qualitative research methods via content analysis and semi-structured interviews, the article concludes by proposing a legal framework to regulate the P2PA platform providers, including hosts and agents, which is deemed timely and necessary for Malaysia to safeguard the interests of both tourists and stakeholders.

Shrimp is Indonesia's leading export commodity that requires quality and safe raw materials. To get appropriate shrimp raw materials, all members of the supply chain must apply the quality assurance and safety requirements of fishery products in accordance with Ministerial Decree KP Number: 52A/KEPMEN-KP/2013. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of quality assurance and safety requirements for fishery products along the supply chain of cultured shrimp raw material suppliers for fish processing units (UPI) in North Jakarta. Two UPIs have been selected as respondents whose suppliers were evaluated regarding the fulfillment of the specified requirements. Data collection was carried out through surveys, observations, and interviews with UPI, collectors/suppliers, farmers, and breeders. Gap analysis and multiple correlation tests were used to assess the appropriateness of the implementation of quality assurance and fishery product safety requirements. The results show that gaps existed between the implementation of the requirement by farmers and suppliers compared with existing standards. The implementation level for farmers is 58% (less according) and the supplier 48% (not according). It was observed that UPI's appreciation of the quality and safety of fishery products was inadequate, allegedly because demand in the global market is very high while the supply does not meet the demand. Issuance of separate quality and safety certificates along the supply chain are believed to be one of the causes. There is a need to change the policy strategy in implementing the shrimp culture certification system for export which can be integrated into one certificate.

Fish remains among the essential diet components in a typical Filipino household. As fish consumption rises, the manner of how it is caught is in question as it affects the quality of the fish. This study aims to analyze the importance of the two credence attributes of environmental sustainability and food safety in fish and fishery products in Davao City, Philippines. Conjoint analysis was used to analyze consumer preference by estimating the consumer’s utility function. From the preference model, the relative importance of the considered attributes in descending order are food safety certification, sustainability practice information, and extent of good animal welfare for target and non-target species. Three major segments of seafood consumers (N = 300) were clustered in terms of policy preferences. These are consumers who preferred policies on food safety certification and traceability system (77%), consumers who preferred policies regarding food safety certification and environmental sustainability certification (16%), and consumers who highly preferred only food safety certification (7%). Using multinomial logistic regression, the factors affecting preferences were found to be average price per kilogram for capture fishery products, barangay (i.e., village) classification, household size, retail outlet choice, sex, frequency of buying, beliefs and practices regarding environmental sustainability and environmental concerns, age, years of education, and frequency of buying fish. The study showed the potential of environmental sustainability and food safety attributes in influencing the purchasing decisions of the consumers.

Compared to international tourism, domestic tourism is less susceptible to external changes and provides a more stable business environment for industry stakeholders. Traditionally, the focus of a majority of tourism research has been international tourism. Existing domestic tourism literature predominantly focuses on the potential of domestic tourism and the measurement of its demands, but greatly ignores the issues and challenges in the domestic tourism industry. This article fills this gap and examines the issues and challenges the domestic tourism industry is facing with a focus on Nepal, a South Asian developing country. The data for this study were collected through semistructured interviews with 20 tourism industry practitioners. The findings of this study demonstrate how uncertainties created by the lack of institutional arrangements and prioritization, and confusion around the appropriate ways and means of managing domestic tourism have contributed to the chaos in the private sector tourism industry in Nepal. Implications for the government and other stakeholders in Nepal and other developing countries have been discussed.

Fish and fishery products are among the food commodities of high commercial value, high-quality protein content, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial to health. However, seafood products are highly perishable and thus require proper processing to maintain their quality and safety. On the other hand, consumers, nowadays, demand fresh or fresh-like, minimally processed fishery products that do not alter their natural quality attributes. The present article reviews the results of studies published over the last 15 years in the literature on: (i) the main spoilage mechanisms of seafood including contamination with pathogens and (ii) innovative processing technologies applied for the preservation and shelf life extension of seafood products. These primarily include: high hydrostatic pressure, natural preservatives, ozonation, irradiation, pulse light technology and retort pouch processing.
