Abstract Hydraulic tests were performed on two pilot scale filters as part of a water treatment project in the village of Nersa, Karnataka, India. The filters use locally sourced alluvial material to filter E.coli contamination using natural processes that mimic those in Riverbank Filtration (RBF). Two pilot scale filters were tested, one containing locally sourced granular activated carbon (GAC) and one without. A falling head test and tracer test were preformed, and breakthrough curves were used to analyze the hydraulic performance. E.coli data were also collected, and percent removal was calculated to determine the effectiveness of the filters. Relative to the influent water, the E.coli removal percentage of Filter 1 (no GAC) was consistently high and ranged between 97.1% and 100% E.coli. The addition of GAC did not improve performance in this study. Overall, the effectiveness in bacteria removal observed in the non GAC filter warranted construction of a full-scale system.

The effectiveness of devolution policies through social forestry programs in village forest schemes is still being debated at regional, national, and international levels. It departs from the fact that the community has limited resources in managing forests in the long run (35 years). The background of this research is to measure the implementation of devolution policy in 10 granted village forest licenses in the sub-district of Batu Ampar, Kubu Raya District, and its relationship with deforestation rates. The study was conducted by survey method and data collection with literature studies and observations. Observation aims to measure the biophysical condition of the forest as well as the social and economic conditions of the community in the village. The data is processed and analyzed using spatial analysis and performance analysis. The results showed that the devolution policy through the issuance of 10 village forest licenses was proven to be able to improve performance in reducing deforestation, especially after one year of the village forest permits were granted. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengurai implementasi kebijakan devolusi di 10 izin hutan desa Kecamatan Batu Ampar, Kabupaten Kubu Raya, dan pengaruhnya terhadap laju deforestasi. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode survei. Pengumpulan data dengan studi literatur dan observasi. Observasi bertujuan untuk mengetahui kondisi biofisik hutan serta kondisi sosial dan ekonomi masyarakat di desa. Data-data diolah dan dianalisis menggunakan analisis spasial dan analisis kinerja. Hasil penelitian menunjukan kebijakan devolusi melalui pemberian 10 izin hutan desa telah terbukti secara kumulatif mampu meningkatkan kinerja positif dalam penurunan deforestasi, terutama setelah satu tahun izin hutan desa diberikan.Kata kunci: devolusi, perhutanan sosial, hutan desa, deforestasi, kinerja

The modified sugarcane bagasse with aluminum sulfate was used as an adsorbent for the removal of soluble oil wastewater. The effects of the flow rate, 5 and 10 cm3/min and the number of columns used were thoroughly investigated in a continuous up-flow adsorption process. At the flow rate of 5 cm3/min respected to the 2nd column, the highest breakthrough point to adsorb soluble oil wastewater was at 6 hrs. The results confirmed that the modified sugarcane bagasse can be used as an adsorbent for fixed-bed continuous adsorption of soluble oil wastewater from steel pipe factory. The breakthrough curves were predicted by Yoon-Nelson model. This model may be fitted to predict the overall breakthrough curve using the experimental data gathered. In addition, the significant uptake of the soluble oil wastewater was demonstrated by the changes in the heat of combustion of the modified sugarcane bagasse before and after the adsorption process.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to evaluate the vulnerability after point source contamination and characterize water circulations in volcanic flows located in the Argnat basin volcanic system (Chaîne des Puys, French Massif Central) using a tracer test performed by injecting a iodide solution. The analysis of breakthrough curves allowed the hydrodispersive characteristics of the massive lava flows to be determined. Large Peclet numbers indicated a dominant advective transport. The multimodal feature of breakthrough curves combined with high values of mean velocity and low longitudinal dispersion coefficients indicated thatwater flows in an environment analogous to a fissure system, and only slightly interacts with a low porosity matrix (ne < 1%). Combining this information with lava flow stratigraphy provided by several drillings allowed a conceptual scheme of potential contaminant behaviour to be designed. Although lava flows are vulnerable to point source pollution due to the rapid transfer of water within fractures, the saturated scoriaceous layers located between massive rocks should suffice to strongly buffer the transit of pollution through dilution and longer transit times. This was consistent with the low recovery rate of the presented tracer test.

Wastewater reuse using soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is a rational and realistic solution in countries and regions with limited freshwater resources. The behaviour and removal of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) under long hydraulic retention times (HRTs) in SAT may warrant further investigation. In this study, actual treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was continuously treated using a pilot-scale SAT reactor with a designed HRT of 30 days, located in the WWTP; PFCA removal characteristics were investigated based on a 14-month monitoring period. Continuous SAT reactor operations were accomplished for 30 months under the designed HRT (28 days, as calculated by a tracer test); stable treatments were achieved during the period, represented by dissolved organic matter removal from 3.94 mgC/L to 0.701 mgC/L. Removal of PFCAs by SAT under an HRT of 28 days was found to be difficult, as indicated by perfluorooctanoic acid level from 18.4 to 19.0 ng/L. In addition, PFCA concentrations may be increased after SAT, probably due to the influences of PFCA precursors; this is indicated by the increase in perfluorononanoic acid from 11.6 to 14.1 ng/L. Based on the guideline values, further removal of PFCAs in SAT-treated effluent may be required.

Las construcciones civiles edificadas sobre suelos inestables son vulnerables a los procesos naturales como la geodinámica interna, externa y el cambio climático. El poblado de Tapacocha que está asentado sobre suelo deslizado es sensible a los procesos naturales. El terremoto de mayo de 1970 ocasionó fracturamiento de la planicie, destrucción de sus construcciones; las intensas lluvias de los años 1942 y 1997 ocasionaron huaycos que destruyeron algunas de sus edificaciones y terrenos de cultivo. La geodinámica interna modeló el basamento con un intenso plegamiento y fracturamiento de las rocas sedimentarias; la geodinámica externa por geoformas modeladas por los movimientos rotacionales, deslizamientos, erosión diferencial. En la actualidad el efecto del cambio climático se manifiestan por las inusuales torrenciales lluvias que erosionan periódicamente y ponen en peligro las edificaciones civiles y la agricultura. Con el presente estudio se propone alertar a las autoridades y sus pobladores para prevenir y mitigar los efectos naturales destructivos. ABSTRACT Buildings standing on unstable soils are vulnerable to natural processes such as internal and external geodynamics and climate change. The village of Tapacocha, which is settled on slid floor, would be sensitive to those natural processes. The May 1970 earthquake caused ground fracture and building destruction; heavy rains in 1942 and 1997 caused mudslides that destroyed buildings and agriculture land. The internal geodynamics gave its shape to the base rocks through intense folding and fracturing of the sedimentary rocks; the external geodynamics created shapes through rotational movements, landslides and differential erosion. Presently, climate change is causing unusual torrential rains that periodically erode and threaten buildings and agriculture. The goal of this study is to advise the authorities and the population on ways to prevent and mitigate the destructive effects of these natural events. A two-well tracer test was conducted in eastern Denmark, in which a short duration pulse of lithium chloride was injected into a recharge well and made to flow through a fractured chalk aquifer to a discharge well. The wells were 25 m apart, and the concentration of lithium arriving at the discharge well was monitored at five vertical intervals in the well for a 21-day period. The observed breakthrough curves show a sharp breakthrough front, with an arrival time that is consistent with advective transport through the fractures in the chalk. The breakthrough curves also exhibit a long tail in the falling limb, suggesting the influence of a secondary transport mechanism of diffusion into the porous matrix.

A two-well tracer test carried out in fractured chalk was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite-difference model for flow and transport which, was constructed on the basis of the geological and hydraulic information collected at the field site. The model was developed as a dual-porosity continuum model, in which advection was assumed to occur only in the fractures, and the water in the porous matrix was assumed to be static. The exchange of solute between the fractures (mobile phase) and the porous matrix (immobile phase) was assumed to occur as a diffusion process in response to the local concentration difference of solute between the two phases. Simulations from the dual-porosity model reproduced the shape of the observed breakthrough curves, although some portions of the tail were not accurately represented. The model was also applied as a single-porosity model for advection and dispersion in the fractures with no solute exchange with the porous matrix. The simulations from the single-porosity model greatly overestimated the observed lithium concentrations, and showed very little tailing effect in the falling limb. The study shows that, based on the given tracer test, solute transport in a fractured chalk cannot be represented by a single-porosity approach and hence when dealing with contaminant transport in such systems, both a fractured and a porous domain need to be considered.

The new railway line between Divača and Koper/Capodistria in south-western Slovenia is being built, a part of which crosses the southern outskirts of the Classical Karst plateaux. It will run through two tunnels, the northern tunnel T1 (6.7 km long) and the southern T2 (6 km long), which partially cross karst aquifer system. A multi-tracer test with injections of fluorescent dyes uranine and naphthionate, bypassing the karst vadose zone, was carried out to define the directions and dynamics of the underground water flow. The main goals were better understanding of the complex hydrogeological conditions in the area and assessment of possible environmental impacts on the nearby water sources. With tracing of uranine injected into a nearby cave stream, the direction of flow from the northern T1 tunnel mainly towards the Reka-Timavo aquifer system and further towards the Timava/Timavo springs was proved. The peak velocities, as determined from the peaks of the tracer breakthrough curves, range from 29 m/h to 36 m/h. Through the wider and well-connected conduits of the Reka-Timavo system, the peak velocities can reach up to 88 m/h. The recovery of uranine in an intermediate cave, i.e., Jama 1 v Kanjaducah, amounted to approximately 74 %. The northern section of the southern T2 tunnel is a part of a wider bifurcation zone between the Osapska Reka and the Boljunec/Bagnoli springs, where peak flow velocities between 10 and 13 m/h have been determined by tracing of naphthionate injected into a borehole located in the line of the planned tunnel. It has been estimated that about 25 % of the injected naphthionate flew out through the Osapska Reka spring and about 5 % through the Boljunec/ Bagnoli springs. Based on this research, proper monitoring of any potential negative impacts of the new railway line will be made possible. The study presents an approach to better planning of hazard control of traffic routes in complex and highly karstified rock settings.

A mathematical model of deep-bed filtration has been calibrated and verified based on experimental results. The experimental system, used for testing of the secondary treatment quality and the tertiary filtration phase, incorporates an SBR system followed by a filtration column. The turbidity of the incoming SBR effluent was in the range of 12 to 34 NTU. The bed grain size was in the range of 1.4 to 2.0 mm. The examined filtration velocities were 11, 15, 20 and 25 m/h. The filtration process is simulated by equations of balance and kinetics. The latter includes the attachment and detachment process, characterized by rate coefficients KA and KD, respectively. These coefficients , as well as the parameters of hydrodispersivity and effective porosity, are found on the basis of nonlinear optimization, using numerical solution of the model and the experimental breakthrough curves. The method demonstrates good agreement between experimental and simulated results.
