Abstract This paper looks into the problem of choosing a driving belt for a drive. The previously developed selection of algorithms was subjected to another evaluation that helped us recognize the need for changes indicated in developing new designs of drive belts. The new algorithm will be tested by simulating the operating conditions of the transmission, to which the right belt must be selected. Damage assessment after operation and belt selection allows for the identification of a new coupling model. By presenting the relationship between specific failure cases and the parameters of the coupling model, we can see the functionality of the selection algorithm. There may be multiple belt transmission damages. The feed may be broken; the surface may be damaged; the same applies to the edges. Furthermore, the wheels and bearings may be damaged too. The belt can have many additional functions that affect its operating parameters. Next to the drive function, the belt often performs conveyor and control functions. Thus, additional types of damage occur in belts with additional functions. The number of causes of their occurrence is also growing. For example, any damage to the sling in the passenger elevator can endanger the life of the passengers. Intensive research is being carried out on the real-mode damage monitoring systems. Specific failures are being monitored, and appropriate systems are being designed for them. Therefore, it is important to investigate the damages to belt transmissions, modeling their course of progression and causes.

For 30 years, forage ryegrass breeding has known that the germplasm may contain a maternally inherited symbiotic Epichloë endophyte. These endophytes produce a suite of secondary alkaloid compounds, dependent upon strain. Many produce ergot and other alkaloids, which are associated with both insect deterrence and livestock health issues. The levels of alkaloids and other endophyte characteristics are influenced by strain, host germplasm, and environmental conditions. Some strains in the right host germplasm can confer an advantage over biotic and abiotic stressors, thus acting as a maternally inherited desirable ‘trait’. Through seed production, these mutualistic endophytes do not transmit into 100% of the crop seed and are less vigorous than the grass seed itself. This causes stability and longevity issues for seed production and storage should the ‘trait’ be desired in the germplasm. This makes understanding the precise nature of the relationship vitally important to the plant breeder. These Epichloë endophytes cannot be ‘bred’ in the conventional sense, as they are asexual. Instead, the breeder may modulate endophyte characteristics through selection of host germplasm, a sort of breeding by proxy. This article explores, from a forage seed company perspective, the issues that endophyte characteristics and breeding them by proxy have on ryegrass breeding, and outlines the methods used to assess the ‘trait’, and the application of these through the breeding, production, and deployment processes. Finally, this article investigates opportunities for enhancing the utilisation of alkaloid-producing endophytes within pastures, with a focus on balancing alkaloid levels to further enhance pest deterrence and improving livestock outcomes.

1. After 14 days on a diet containing 5 or 25% casein male rats received a fracture of the left femur. Four hours before they were killed the injured and control rats were injected with [1-14C]leucine; the incorporation of radioactivity into an isolated fraction of skeletal muscle ribosomes was studied 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 228 h after injury.2. The incorporation of [14C]leucine into the ribosome fraction in right thigh muscles dropped to 40% of control values 72 h after fracture in well-nourished rats and after 96 h with diets containing 5 or 25%, casein.3. The specific activity of the trichloroacetic acid-soluble fraction of muscle from injured rats was equal to or higher than that of the controls during the first 72 h but lower at 96 h.4. These results suggest that a reduced incorporation of amino acids by ribosomes from the right thigh muscle occurred on day 3 after fracture in the group receiving 25% casein but not in the group receiving 5% casein.5. Muscle RNA and DNA concentrations were not affected by the injury.6. The relationship between these findings and the loss of muscle N after injury is discussed.

Online line-of-sight (LOS) pyrometer is used on certain jet engines for diagnosis and control functions such as hot-blade detection, high-temperature limiting, and condition-based monitoring. Hot particulate bursts generated from jet engine combustor at certain running conditions lead to intermittent high-voltage signal outputs from the LOS pyrometer which is ultimately used by the onboard digital engine controller (DEC). To study the nature of hot particulates and enable LOS pyrometer functioning under burst conditions, a multicolor pyrometry (MCP) system was developed under DARPA funded program and tested on an aircraft jet engine. Soot particles generated as byproduct of combustion under certain conditions was identified as the root cause for the signal burst in a previous study. The apparent emissivity was then used to remove burst signals. In current study, the physics based filter with MCP algorithm using apparent emissivity was further extended to real-time engine control by removing burst signals at real time (1 MHz) and at engine DEC data rate. Simulink models are used to simulate the performances of the filter designs under engine normal and burst conditions. The results are compared with current LOS pyrometer results and show great advantage. The proposed model enables new LOS pyrometer design for improved engine control over wide range of operating conditions.

Drainage of surface water from the pavement structure is an important parameter for preserving the designed period and safety during the operation of the pavement structure. The paper presents research on the relationship between the efficiency of drains depending on the cross slope. When the correct selection of transverse slopes and the collection of rain runoff from the catchment area of the road, the safety of the operating conditions itself increases. By changing the transverse slope, the parameters in terms of water runoff speed and drain efficiency also change. During the analysis, this paper also took into account the hydrological parameters for the site where the section in question is located. The analysis in this paper aims to show how the correct selection of cross slopes of pavement structures can be of key importance for the efficiency of the drain, and thus the efficient drainage of surface water from the pavement structure.

Abstract The trait of extraversion is one of the longest-standing domains that captures the social dimension of personality and can potentially explain the covariation of a wide variety of behaviors. To date, there is a growing recognition that human behavior should be specified not only through the psychological mechanisms underlying each trait but also through their underlying neurobehavioral systems. While imaging studies have revealed important initial insights into the structural and functional neural correlates of extraversion, current knowledge about the relationships between extraversion and brain structures is still rather limited, especially with regard to the relationship between extraversion and white matter (WM). In this study, we aimed to investigate WM microstructure in extraversion in greater depth. Thirty-five healthy volunteers (21 women; mean age 35) underwent magnetic resonance imaging, as a part of a larger project aimed at investigating the longitudinal effect of motor training. WM integrity was assessed using the diffusion tensor imaging technique combining multiple diffusion tensor measures. Extraversion was assessed by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised. Voxelwise correlation analyses between fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivities, and radial diffusivities maps and extraversion score showed decreased connectivity in the right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus and forceps major among individuals who had high extraversion ratings. In conclusion, individual differences in extraversion may reflect differential organization of the WM tracts connecting frontal cortex, temporal, and occipital areas, which are related to socioemotional and control functions.

The Vatican had never recognized the Independent State of Croatia (henceforth ISC) in accordance with its traditional policy of not giving recognition to the countries formed in war until hostilities cease and peace treaties come into effect. However, a few months after the declaration of the ISC, the Holy See sent an apostolic visitor to the Croatian Catholic episcopate in Zagreb, Dr. Ramiro Marcone, a monk from the Benedictine abbey in Montevergine, Italy. Marcone was accompanied by his secretary, Dr. Giuseppe Masucci, also a Benedictine monk. The two men lived in Zagreb until the end of the ISC in 1945 but also stayed for some time after that. In accordance with their duties, Marcone and Masucci were in contact with the archbishop of Zagreb, Alojzije Stepinac, on a daily basis and were thus well-informed about numerous issues of the time, especially those pertaining to the relationship between the Catholic Church and the government of ISC. The Catholic hierarchy headed by archbishop Stepinac, welcomed the proclamation of ISC and throughout the war expressed their belief that the Croatian people had the right to its own independent state. Abbot Marcone and his secretary Masucci acted in synergy with archbishop Stepinac. In accordance with his mission Marcone submitted reports to the Holy See while his secretary Masucci kept notes in his diary. One can observe Masucci's constant work on saving the persecuted, specially Jews from his diary (which has two different versions in Croatian translation). After the end of ISC, Masucci and Marcone were under strict surveillance and control of the secret service of the new communist regime which considered the Catholic Church an enemy of the state and openly persecuted it with the intention of destroying it. Abbot Marcone travelled to Rome on 10 July 1945 and the Yugoslav authorities denied him re-entry. His secretary Masucci also left Yugoslavia on 20 March 1946 after constant pressure from the new administration and was also denied re-entry.
