Abstract Abstract We report the growth rates and plumage development of Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) in two developmental stages from hatching to fledging, the nestling period (1–22 days) and prefledging period (23–37 days). We used the logistic growth equation to model nestling mass gain. Mass gain was most rapid during the nestling period. Average mass gain per day was highest between seven and 13 days of age. At 16 days of age nestlings displayed defined facial disks and complete second down. Nestlings left the nest at 22 days of age. Mass gain slowed considerably after nest departure and continued to slow up to fledging. Appearance of defensive and concealment behaviors occurred nearly simultaneously with departure from the nest. To our knowledge this is the first detailed report of nestling growth rates and plumage development for Long-eared Owls in North America.

The heat-resistance of coating from deposited steel 15N8G6M3FTB at temperature of 900 °С is studied. It is established that this dependence occurs in the first hours. The average mass gain of the metal scale of such coating at 900 °С is 0.0128 kg/(m2 •h). It is shown that the basis of metal scale of the composition 15N8G6M3FTB is hematite Fe2O3 and magnetite Fe3O4, as well as MnO, which have protective properties. The number of other phase compounds with high protective properties is negligible. The coating from steel 15N8G6M3FTB can be used for applying to the surface of parts operating at elevated temperatures.

Abstract. The North China Plain (NCP) has experienced frequent severe haze pollution events in recent years. While extensive measurements have been made in megacities, aerosol sources, processes, and particle growth at urban downwind sites remain less understood. Here, an aerosol chemical speciation monitor and a scanning mobility particle sizer, along with a suite of collocated instruments, were deployed at the downwind site of Xingtai, a highly polluted city in the NCP, for real-time measurements of submicron aerosol (PM1) species and particle number size distributions during May and June 2016. The average mass concentration of PM1 was 30.5 (±19.4) µg m−3, which is significantly lower than that during wintertime. Organic aerosols (OAs) constituted the major fraction of PM1 (38 %), followed by sulfate (25 %) and nitrate (14 %). Positive matrix factorization with the multilinear engine version 2 showed that oxygenated OA (OOA) was the dominant species in OA throughout the study, on average accounting for 78 % of OA, while traffic and cooking emissions both accounted for 11 % of OA. Our results highlight that aerosol particles at the urban downwind site were highly aged and mainly from secondary formation. However, the diurnal cycle also illustrated the substantial influence of urban emissions on downwind sites, which are characterized by similar pronounced early morning peaks for most aerosol species. New particle formation and growth events were also frequently observed (58 % of the time) on both clean and polluted days. Particle growth rates varied from 1.2 to 4.9 nm h−1 and our results showed that sulfate and OOA played important roles in particle growth during clean periods, while OOA was more important than sulfate during polluted events. Further analyses showed that particle growth rates have no clear dependence on air mass trajectories.

Ladyfish (Elopssp) are a common and economically valuable coastal nearshore species found along coastal beaches, bays, and estuaries of the southeastern United States, and subtropical and tropical regions worldwide. Previously, ladyfish were a substantial bycatch in Florida’s commercial fisheries, but changes in regulations significantly reduced commercial landings. Today, ladyfish are still taken in commercial fisheries in Florida, but many are also taken by recreational anglers. Life-history information and research interest in ladyfish is almost non-existent, especially information on age and growth. Thus, the overarching purpose of this study was to expand our understanding of ladyfish age and growth characteristics. The specific objectives were to describe, for the first time, age, growth, and recruitment patterns of juvenile ladyfish from the east coast of Florida (USA). In the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), annual monthly length-frequency distributions were confounded because a few small individuals recruited throughout the year; monthly length-frequency data generally demonstrated a cyclical pattern. The smallest were collected in September and the largest in May. Post-hoc analysis showed no significant difference in length between August and May, or among the other months. In Volusia County (VC), annual monthly length-frequency distribution demonstrated growth generally occurred from late-winter and spring to summer. The smallest ladyfish were collected in February and the largest in August. On average, the absolute growth rate in the IRL was 36.3 mm in 60 days or 0.605 mm day−1. Cohort-specific daily growth rates, elevations, and coincidentals were similar among sampling years. Cohort-specific growth rates ranged from 1.807 in 1993 to 1.811 mm day−1in 1994. Overall, growth was best (i.e., goodness of fit) described by exponential regression. On average, the absolute growth rate in VC was 28 mm in 150 days or 0.1866 mm day−1. Cohort-specific daily growth rates were significantly different among sampling years; however, the elevations and coincidentals were similar. Cohort-specific growth rates ranged from 1.741 in 1994 to 1.933 mm day−1in 1993. Mean ladyfish growth was best described by linear regression; however, natural growth was explained better by exponential regression. In the IRL, the corrected exponential growth equation yielded a size-at-age 1 of 156.0 mm SL, which corresponded to an estimated growth rate of 0.4356 mm day−1. In VC, the corrected exponential growth equation yielded a size-at-age 1 of 80 mm SL corresponding to an estimated growth rate of 0.2361 mm day−1.

This article studies modeling of a population growth by logistic equation when the population carrying capacity K tends to infinity. Results are obtained using fractional calculus theories. A fractional derivative known as psi-Caputo plays a substantial role in the study. We proved existence and uniqueness of the solution to the problem using the psi-Caputo fractional derivative. The Chinese population, whose carrying capacity, K, tends to infinity, is used as evidence to prove that the proposed approach is appropriate and performs better than the usual logistic growth equation for a population with a large carrying capacity. A psi-Caputo logistic model with the kernel function x + 1 performed the best as it minimized the error rate to 3.20% with a fractional order of derivative α  = 1.6455.

AbstractA logistic growth equation with time and location varying parameters was used to model corn response to applied nitrogen. A nonlinear dummy-variable regression model provided a parsimonious representation of site and time effects on parameter values. The model was used to test for the equality of the mean marginal product of nitrogen fertilizer between locations on the coastal plain of North Carolina. Monte Carlo simulation and bootstrap simulation were used to construct finite sample covariance estimates. Results support rejection of the hypothesis that mean marginal products are equal when nitrogen is applied at 168 kg/ac. A comparison of bootstrapped errors and asymptotic errors suggests that results based on asymptotic theory are fairly reliable in this case.

Growth rates are compared from birth to early weaning in Planigale gilesi and P. tenuirostris, by means of linear regression of body parameters plotted against age. Pouch young of each species had similar growth rates; an equation is given for the aging of pouch young of P. gilesi. Juveniles of P. gilesi grew faster than those of P. tenuirostris; in both species there was a trend for males to grow faster than females. Eye opening and the end of weaning were two important developmental stages, associated with changes to reduced growth rates. Changes in body condition of the juveniles indicated that the weaning process was initiated by the mother. The different growth rates between the species and sexes produced a range of body sizes in juveniles at independence. This has important implications for partitioning of food and for community structure.

The relationship between territorial aggression and reproductive success was studied on a well-established, insular population of tree swallows. Four treatments of nest boxes that differed in interbox distances were created. Short interbox distances significantly reduced the occupancy of nest boxes both between and within years. Swallows in short interbox distance treatments defended more than one nest box, which was an additional resource not necessary for their successful reproduction. Excluded potential breeders attempted to colonize vacant boxes within another swallow's territory throughout the nestling period, but were usually prevented by the aggression of the resident pair. Aggressive activity had no direct effect on three measures of a swallow's reproductive output: percent young fledged, nestling growth, and fledgling weights. The concept of intraspecific aggressive neglect is questioned. However, by excluding potential breeders from nesting, for whatever reason, breeding tree swallows increased their relative genetic contribution to future generations.

ABSTRACT Although commercial MRS broth has been designed to allow excellent growth of lactobacilli, most of these bacteria are still subjected to a self-inhibiting process. The most likely explanation is the accumulation of lactic acid or other toxic end products and the depletion of nutrients. In this study, the self-inhibition ofLactobacillus sakei CTC 494 was analyzed in a kinetic way, and a nutrient depletion model was set up to describe the growth inhibition process. This simple model has considerable advantages compared to commonly used descriptive models such as the logistic growth equation. It offers a better fit and a more realistic description of the growth data by taking into account both growth inhibition due to lactic acid production and changes in growth rates due to nutrient depletion. Depending on the fermentation conditions, in MRS broth there appears to be a strong decrease of the specific growth rate over time. Some undefined compounds present in the complex nitrogen source of MRS broth appear to be of crucial importance because of their limited availability. Moreover, nutrient availability affects bacteriocin production through its effect on cell growth as well as on the bacteriocin production per cell. A plateau value for the bacteriocin production by L. sakei CTC 494 was observed.

The present study used otolith analysis-based body size back-calculation to: (1) evaluate the hypothesis of growth-dependent survival in young Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF; Thunnus orientalis) from the north-western Pacific Ocean; (2) identify critical developmental stages for survival; and (3) compare interannual differences in early growth. To this end, we compared the daily growth trajectories of a large number of larvae (standard length (SL) <15mm), juveniles (15≤SL≤150mm), and young-of-year (YOY; SL >150mm) collected between 2011 and 2015. Otolith radius and SL were highly correlated and yielded a single relationship applicable for the five year-classes. Body size back-calculation showed that only larvae with fast, steady growth successfully transitioned to the juvenile stage. The ontogenetic analysis of daily growth rates revealed interannual differences only in larvae, and not in the larval stage of juveniles and YOY. Neither sudden decreases nor increases in growth rates were observed during the larval stage of any of the stages, suggesting that the observed variability in larval body size may be the result of individual differences in growth rates rather than of drastic, one-time events. Overall, the results of the present study indicate that growth-dependent survival of larvae may be the most critical for PBF recruitment.
