Abstract Introduction Significant alterations occur in human physiology and the way medications function in space (1). Understanding the efficacy and pitfalls of pharmacological intervention and developing space-related pharmacy services is therefore integral to ensuring a sustained presence for human spaceflight. In contemporary society, the pharmacist plays a significant role in a person’s health. However, pharmacist input towards the spaceflight participant’s health is minimal to nil. Aim: T o explore stakeholder perspectives towards the role of Astropharmacy in the space sector. Methods Pharmacists (n = 18) across the globe and space sector participants (n = 18) from governmental, commercial, and space tourism sectors participated, via 27 qualitative interviews and three focus groups. Participants were recruited via purposive and snowball sampling. A six-step thematic analysis was used and mapped into the Job Characteristics Model (JCM). JCM is a theory within work design, aiming to promote work experiences and personal outcomes. There are five job dimensions – skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback which influence three psychological states required for a well-designed job. The three psychological states are meaningfulness, responsibility, and knowledge of work results, which lead to positive work and personal experiences (2). Results Three key themes were generated: medication management, medication research, and regulation/licensing. Medication management encompassed safeguarding the space traveller’s health, like space tourists, by conducting medication reviews (pre-and post-flight), medication advice (digital astro-telepharmacy information services during spaceflight) and developing personalised medication. Medication management also included ensuring shelf-life and continuous medication supply for deep space exploration. Medication research included novel drug development, innovative manufacturing, and understanding clinical applications of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes of medications in space. Innovative manufacturing like 3-D printing raises questions regarding the need for regulations/licensing of medications use and manufacturing in space. Based on the JCM our findings indicate that Astropharmacy possesses diverse duties eliciting meaningfulness, with clear responsibility and observable workplace results promoting task significance, and both the medication and patient focus promoting task identity. Autonomy was blurred within Astropharmacy as a degree of autonomy is needed due to the field’s novelty, but workforce regulations by governmental space agencies are expected. Lastly, workplace feedback can be achieved in Astropharmacy through performance reviews. Conclusion The Astropharmacy role is perceived to involve medication management, medication research and regulation/licensing of medications for space. The work design of astropharmacy is well-reflected in the JCM, implying that a novel and energising opportunity for the pharmacy profession is forthcoming. Although the data generated by qualitative research are not generalizable to other settings, these themes represent the first study to investigate the space sector qualitatively in the context of pharmacy, providing rich foundational data for future research. Objectives: This study was conducted to explore Korean community pharmacists' perceptions of their roles in providing care to patients after the implementation of the Separation of Prescribing and Dispensing Act (SPD Act) and to investigate pharmacists' perceptions about factors that impact their patient care. Methods: Eight community pharmacists participated in semi-structured, face-to-face, in-depth interviews in Korea. A snowball sampling technique was used to obtain participants. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Interviews were analyzed using a summative content analysis procedure. Key findings: Participants' perceptions of their roles centered on dispensing prescriptions, educating and counseling patients, and helping patients with OTC products. Participants perceived time constraints due to prescription volume and patient expectations as factors influencing their provision of patient care. Conclusion: This study suggests that the SPD Act was successful in changing pharmacists' roles in the Korean health care system. None of the participants perceived their role to include prescribing, while all of the participants indicated that their primary role was to dispense medications. Future research should examine the pervasiveness of the themes identified in this study across Korean community pharmacy practice in order to generalize the impact of the SPD Act.   Type: Original Research

This study examines five perceived task characteristics variables (decision-making autonomy, task variety, task significance, task identity, feedback from job) and its effect on employee engagement at six private college employees in Sarawak. Despite extensive research on employee engagement, very little empirical research has examined this area of study specifically in the context of Sarawak private colleges. A survey questionnaire was employed to collect the data. A total of 284 responses were analysed using SPSS version 22.0. The results of this study revealed that only feedback from job, task identity and decision-making autonomy are significantly and positively associated with employee engagement. Task significance and task variety were not significantly related to employee engagement. Most importantly, decision-making autonomy was perceived as a dominant task characteristic for employee engagement; it was associated with significant improvements on private colleges’ employee engagement. This study contributes to a better understanding of the effect of perceived task characteristics on employee engagement among private colleges in Sarawak. The implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Over the years, both management practitioners and academics have generally assumed that positive workplaces lead to desired outcomes. Unlike psychology, considerable attention has also been devoted to the study of positive topics such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. However, to place a scientifically based focus on the role that positivity may play in the development and performance of human resources, and largely stimulated by the positive psychology initiative, positive organizational behavior (POB) and psychological capital (PsyCap) have recently been introduced into the management literature. This chapter first provides an overview of both the historical and contemporary positive approaches to the workplace. Then, more specific attention is given to the meaning and domain of POB and PsyCap. Our definition of POB includes positive psychological capacities or resources that can be validly measured, developed, and have performance impact. The constructs that have been determined so far to best meet these criteria are efficacy, hope, optimism, and resiliency. When combined, they have been demonstrated to form the core construct of what we term psychological capital (PsyCap). A measure of PsyCap is being validated and this chapter references the increasing number of studies indicating that PsyCap can be developed and have performance impact. The chapter concludes with important future research directions that can help better understand and build positive workplaces to meet current and looming challenges.

Job analysis, a major form of job measurement, is essential for a whole range of job related personnel functions and is often central in debate and legislation surrounding fair labour practice, equal opportunity and pay. This article deals with the behavioural-science contributions to the field. Job analysis and particularly quantified job analysis is discussed in detail and some methodological issues are highlighted. The author also deals with job design, i.e. the measurement of job content for job-design purposes. Aspects like skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback are scrutinized. Problems and implications regarding validity and reliability are discussed.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures forced sexual health services to engage with patients remotely. We aimed to understand perceived barriers and facilitators to the provision of digital sexual health services during the first months of the pandemic. Methods: An online survey and qualitative interviews with UK sexual healthcare professionals recruited online and via snowball sampling were conducted in May–July 2020. Results: Amongst 177 respondents (72% female, 86% White, mean age = 46, SD = 9), most utilised telephone and email as their main communication channels; however, their perceived effectiveness varied (94% and 66%, respectively). Most agreed that staff needed additional training (89%), the available technology was not adequate (66%) and health professionals were hesitant to provide online consultations (46%). They had positive attitudes towards digitalisation, improving service quality and cost-effectiveness but were concerned about exacerbating health inequalities. Discussion: The study identifies a need for clear guidelines and training around the use of digital tools as well as a demand for investment in hardware and software required for the provision of remote services. Future research needs to explore the acceptability, safety and effectiveness of various digital tools to narrow health inequalities in sexual health service users.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer a review of the selected literature in ethical leadership synthesizing findings from 45 articles selected from journals on leadership, public administration, organizational behavior, psychology and ethics. Design/methodology/approach Four themes are addressed: the conceptualization of ethical leadership theories, the existence of popular measurement instruments for ethical leadership, findings on ethical leadership in the public sector and outcomes of ethical leadership in terms of benefits and negative consequences. Findings The definition by Brown et al. (2005) is the most frequently used definition, even though recent criticism states that this definition may be too narrow. Ethical leadership is usually measured by means of a survey; however, there are at least three different questionnaires in use. In the public sector, ethical leadership has been linked to both positive outcomes and negative consequences. Research limitations/implications This paper only includes selected academic articles and does not include published books. Originality/value Based on our findings, the authors present recommendations for future research, among others into a broader conceptualization of ethical leadership and the use of mixed methods.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the information channels used by public and nonprofit organizations to communicate disaster risk information to Colonias residents in Hidalgo County, Texas. It seeks to find creative and proactive solutions for organizations to improve risk education to these constituents. Design/methodology/approach – Initially a snowball sampling technique was used to conduct six face-to-face interviews. This was followed by an online survey sent to 64 reputational referrals, of which 23 completed the survey, generating a response rate of 34 percent. A comparative analysis between public and nonprofit organizations and the Fischer's exact test were employed to analyze the data. Findings – Channel preferences for providing risk information varied with public organizations using the television (TV) and the nonprofit organizations using bilingual staff for outreach. The television, radio, public events, and bilingual staff were considered to be the most effective while social media (Facebook, Twitter, and city web sites) was not considered at all by both groups. Lack of funding and staffing problems were identified as the primary challenges. Research limitations/implications – One limitation is that the paper focusses on organizations serving Spanish speakers in the Texas Colonias. Future research needs to investigate how other localities at border sites where culturally and linguistically diverse groups might reside, receive and understand risk information. The role of cross-national organizations in creating internationally coordinated plans for disaster communication should also be explored. Originality/value – It highlights the challenges faced by organizations in communicating risk, especially in border communities where culturally and linguistically diverse groups reside.

This study explores gendered lending and marketing practices of start-up capital to women entrepreneurs in South Africa. A multi-method research design, comprising of 6 in-depth interviews with experts, and a survey of 50 women entrepreneurs was adopted using convenience and snowball sampling techniques, respectively. The findings revealed that women entrepreneurs are experiencing gendered discriminatory practices embedded in lending practices used by financial institutions, thereby discouraging them to venture into non-traditional industries. Whilst financial providers may know their products well, many emerging women entrepreneurs in South Africa may find it difficult and costly to obtain information on the thousands of financial products available. Hence, women entrepreneurs resort to taking greater risks than necessary in order to get their businesses off the ground. Educating women on financial matters is extremely important if South Africa is to benefit fully from the untapped entrepreneurial talent that women possess. The study adds voice to the discriminatory lending practices faced by women entrepreneurs in developing countries. Future research could explore the feasibility of establishing a financial institution which caters specifically for the needs of women.

Background: The Los Angeles Barbershop Blood Pressure Study (LABBPS) demonstrated that collaboration between barbers and pharmacists delivering hypertension management could significantly improve blood pressure as well as access to care. It is unknown if this model can be translated to other locations. This single-arm, proof-of-concept pilot study tested the development and implementation of a similar protocol in Nashville, TN (NCT04232124). Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, community stakeholders, clinicians, investigators, and the LABBPS team convened to adapt the study design and protocol. Established barbershops with barbers willing to be trained on study procedures were recruited as study sites. Non-Hispanic Black male clients, aged 35-79 years with systolic blood pressure (SBP) > 140 mmHg on two screening days were eligible for participation. Enrolled participants met with a pharmacist for lifestyle and medication management at least once monthly for a six-month period. Barbers measured blood pressure during haircuts for additional monitoring. Results: Eight barbershops in business for an average of 20 (± 5) years participated in the trial. Barbers from each shop (range: 1-4) were trained. A total of 419 clients completed screening visit 1, 82 were eligible and 52 (12%) completed visit 2. We enrolled 36, with 30 completing the initial clinical visit and 27 had complete data at 6-months. Participants were on average age 50 (± 10) years, had a body mass index 33 (± 6), 44% were currently smoking, 52% with high school or less education, and 56% reported current primary care. Baseline BP 157.7±17.1/ 95.1±13.9 mmHg improved to 125.7±11.9/75.6±9.5, a change of -32.1±21.6/ -19.5±14.1, respectively. At 6-months 85% of the group had a BP<140/90, 74% BP<135/85, and 67% BP<130/80. At baseline 15% of participants reported health as excellent/very good and this increased to 56% at 6-months (p=0.002). Adverse reactions reported were minimal. Conclusion: Implementation of the barber-pharmacist model of hypertension management and care delivery improved BP control among hypertensive Black men in Nashville. Lessons learned regarding adaptation overcoming unforeseen barriers will inform expansion into additional naïve locations for future research.

Inadequate breast milk supply is a frequently reported reason for early discontinuation of breastfeeding and represents a critical opportunity for intervening to improve breastfeeding outcomes. For women who continue to experience insufficient milk supply despite the utilisation of non-pharmacological lactation support strategies, pharmacological intervention with medications used to augment lactation, commonly referred to as galactagogues, is common. Galactagogues exert their pharmacological effects through altering the complex hormonal milieu regulating lactation, particularly prolactin and oxytocin. This narrative review provides an appraisal of the existing evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of pharmaceutical treatments for lactation insufficiency to guide their use in clinical practice. The greatest body of evidence surrounds the use of domperidone, with studies demonstrating moderate short-term improvements in breast milk supply. Evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of metoclopramide is less robust, but given that it shares the same mechanism of action as domperidone it may represent a potential treatment alternative where domperidone is unsuitable. Data on remaining interventions such as oxytocin, prolactin and metformin is too limited to support their use in clinical practice. The review provides an overview of key evidence gaps and areas of future research, including the impacts of pharmaceutical galactagogues on breast milk composition and understanding factors contributing to individual treatment response to pharmaceutical galactagogues.
