This chapter provides a theoretical and empirical overview of the sexual attitudes, beliefs, and values expressed by emerging adults. It highlights contemporary research that represents the changing patterns in this sociocultural arena. Furthermore, it is contended that because attitudes, beliefs, and values contribute to the makeup of sexual subjectivities, these subjectivities can best be understood within broader assemblages. Thus, the chapter is loosely organized around the following themes: peers, families, religion, and visual media. The chapter concludes by highlighting the absence of academic inquiries related to queer identified emerging adults and persons who are not enrolled in college, and it suggests areas for future research.

Friends and peers play an important role in emerging adults’ sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors. This chapter highlights how friends and peers provide a context for interacting with sexual partners and engaging in activities, such as drinking alcohol, that make sexual behavior more likely. Furthermore, this chapter discusses how friends and peers help emerging adults interpret their sexual experiences through social norms and communication. In addition, the chapter provides recommendations for future research investigating how friends and peers impact emerging adults’ sexual attitudes and behaviors, including how peer influence differs across time, based on relationship context or based on individual characteristics, such as gender, sexual orientation, college status, and cultural background.

Although theoretical and empirical writings on habits and routines are a promising body of science to guide interventions, little is known about such interventions among emerging adults with type 1 diabetes. Thus, an integrative review was conducted to describe interventions in relation to habits and routines, their influence on outcomes, and users’ perspectives. A medical librarian conducted a search. Teams screened titles, abstracts, and articles based upon predefined criteria. Evidence from the final 11 articles was synthesized. A minority of investigators explicitly articulated habits and routines theoretical underpinnings as part of the interventions. However, text messaging or feedback via technology used in other interventions could be implicitly linked to habits and routines. For the most part, these interventions positively influenced diabetes self-management-related behaviors and health outcomes. In general, the interventions were perceived positively by users. Future research is advocated using habit and routine theoretical underpinnings to guide interventions.

Leadership talent development has been identified as a priority in national and state standards for gifted education. However, leadership programs in schools are not always supported by mandates or funding in individual states and implementation is not always feasible within the constraints of local gifted service models. Although some research has been devoted to leadership for gifted and high-ability adolescents and emerging adults, a limited number of studies on the identification, measurement, and development of leadership talent have been conducted. This systematic review of literature examined existing research on leadership talent development for adolescents and emerging adults. A database search identified 38 quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies that were screened, summarized, and synthesized for discussion. The review highlighted research contexts, definitions of leadership, and themes that captured the recommendations researchers made across studies. Implications for developing leadership talent and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Emerging adults (approximately 18 to 25 years of age) experience heightened self-exploration regarding their beliefs and values, including those concerning religiosity and spirituality. The purpose of this article is to review the literature regarding religiosity and spirituality in emerging adulthood. First, we document developmental advances in physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development that support this exploration along with theoretical and empirical work on how religiosity and spirituality develop during this time period. Second, we examine the research on prevalence rates for and correlates of religiosity and spirituality. Third, we examine socializing agents of religiosity and spirituality that document parents’ indirect role relative to other adults, peers, and the media. Next, we examine the role that culture, community, and gender play in the development and socialization of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices. Lastly, future research directions and implications of the findings are discussed.

Background & purpose. Research indicates a positive relationship between sharing alcohol references on social media and drinking behavior. The current study extends that line of research by assessing the interaction of risk-related personality traits with alcohol-related social media use, to examine if social media can be used to identify individuals at risk for heavy drinking behavior. Methods & results. The results of a cross-sectional survey among a sample of 638 emerging adults (age 18-25) find that the positive association between sharing alcohol references on social media and drinking intention was strongest for individuals with low levels of sensation seeking and sensitivity to peer pressure, and high levels of self-control, and non-significant for those on the other end of these personality traits. Conclusions. These findings indicate that the relationship between sharing alcohol references and drinking intentions is not uniform for all individuals, and that risk-related individual differences should be considered in future research and interventions.

Almost a decade has passed since the first post-communist states acceded to the EU. Ten years after confirmation of the successful establishment of democratic and market-economic institutions in these countries, it is time to ask what type of institutions really developed. This article critically reviews contemporary research into capitalism in the eight countries, the main approaches applied, and the findings published. Firstly, it attempts to identify the type of capitalism that has developed in the region. Secondly, it highlights some pitfalls in the contemporary study of capitalism in Central Eastern Europe and discusses possible remedies for future research. The main recommendation, discussed in more detail in the study, is that stricter theoretical reasoning would help to eliminate the contradictory conclusions many authors have arrived at.

Romantic relationships among emerging adults (individuals aged 18–25 years) are typically homogenously classified both theoretically and empirically as “exploratory” and “unstable.” With a sample of college students ( N = 340), we examined within-group variation among romantic relationships in emerging adulthood using latent class analyses. Four predictor variables indicated four types of romantic relationships among emerging adult college students: the committers (38%), the casual daters (23%), the settlers (30%), and the volatile daters (8%). Classes varied according to background variables such as gender and infidelity. Additionally, there was class variation for outcome variables such as breakup status and loneliness. Future research and implications are discussed.

This chapter explores the intersection of religion and sex among emerging adults. It first discusses the extant empirical literature related to how religion influences sexual behavioral decisions as well as the link between religion and sexual values and attitudes. It then acknowledges a general waning from religion during emerging adulthood but presents diverse trajectories related to the religious lives of emerging adults and their sexual decision making. Next, the chapter discusses a variety of pathways and trajectories through which emerging adults may travel as they navigate decisions involving relationships and sexual intimacy and how such decisions are, may be, or are not influenced by religion. The four presented trajectories are religious rejecters, religious remainers, religious returners, and religious innovators. The chapter concludes by addressing some additional complexities regarding emerging adults, religion, and sex and offers some concluding questions and directions for future research.

Today’s emerging adults belong to one of the most diverse generations in the United States and show the highest rates of alcohol and illicit drug misuse, facing significant health risks. Thus it is critical to develop effective interventions to reduce alcohol and illicit substance misuse and its related harms among this diverse group. This chapter examines the current literature on the development and effectiveness of existing culturally relevant substance use disorder treatments and makes recommendations for future research and best practices. We argue that given their unique needs, the severity of their substance use, and the low rates of treatment engagement among this population, it is critical that treatment efforts focus on increasing effective treatment access to all emerging adults. We further encourage substance use disorder treatment researchers and practitioners to move beyond addressing culture-bound intervention targets focused on specific cultural groups. The chapter advocates for the development, testing, and adoption of interventions that are responsive to cultural contexts and that (1) target social determinants of health, (2) are equally effective with privileged and marginalized emerging adults, and (3) prepare therapists to effectively deliver interventions to diverse groups and demonstrate cultural competence.

This chapter reviews state-of-the-art substance use prevention and treatment models available for college-attending and non-college-attending emerging adults. Findings on the widely researched Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) model are summarized, as well as those for community-level prevention efforts for college students. For non-college attending emerging adults, motivational interviewing, twelve step facilitation treatment, and cognitive-behavioral therapies have the most empirical support. Few studies are available on the use of primary care–based interventions for emerging adults, which are needed if integrated care is to be realized. There is also new evidence suggesting personalized feedback is less effective than other treatments for emerging adults in non-college settings. Finally, the chapter discusses the mixed findings on electronic interventions and provides recommendations for future research.
