This chapter presents a detailed review and discussion of recent and current research into the philosophy of making holes in surfaces (i.e., pits are holes in the ground), and into the psychology of the visual perception of concave shapes (i.e., pits are creations of concave spaces). Discussion focuses on categories of holes, the definition of surfaces, the (in)significance of hole-fillings, the existential paradox of holes as objects, the disruptions caused by holed surfaces, and the visual advantages of convex (versus concave) shapes. The chapter ends with a discussion of the relevance of the philosophy and psychology of holes to Măgura and other pit-house sites like it, suggesting that the reader will benefit from thinking in potentially metaphysical terms about pit-houses.

The present generally accepted definition of a premature based on weight (a newborn weighing less than 2,500 gm.) has obvious limitations. The authors have pursued an interesting attempt to find physiologic indices of development which may distinguish the state of maturity. A series of neuromotor examinations is correlated with gestational period: visual perception, Moro reflex, manual grasping, prone behavior, swallow reflex, sucking reflex, sleeping habits, and capacity to regulate temperature. A group of 33 infants weighing 1,000 to 2,500 gm. were examined. The maximum of grasping-suck and prone-behavior reflexes appeared to develop simultaneously with the ability to suck, these accomplishments occurring in the thirty-fifth to thirty-seventh fetal week. The authors indicate that the degree of physiologic accomplishment correlates more closely with the gestational period than does the weight. It would seem that these observations should be extended to a much larger group of infants to determine the validity of the employment of physiologic indices rather than weight as a basis for judging maturity.

Key figures in Smith’s definition of sympathy clarify the ways his definition is unique and representative in Enlightenment discourse and suggest significant correlations with narrative perspective. His figures of the brother on the rack and the impartial spectator make kinship, physical pain, visual perception, and abstract perspective central to his influential account of sympathy. In the effort to overcome human difference, his conception of perspective anticipates a novelistic version of sympathy that struggles to accommodate difference through shifting narrative perspectives. “Vicarious narratives” identifies intersections between second-hand emotions, or feeling another person’s emotions as if they were one’s own, and second-hand narratives, or telling another person’s story as if it were one’s own. Details of grammar and citation posit a grammar of vicarious experience that destabilizes the meaning of the first-person singular pronoun and challenges the association between the individual and the novel as a genre.

There has been a long-standing need for a piezoviscous parameter αfilm that, together with the ambient viscosity μ0, will completely quantify the Newtonian rheology so that the film thickness for liquids that do not shear-thin in the inlet may be calculated as h=h(μ0,αfilm,…), regardless of the details of the pressure-viscosity response. It seems that Blok’s reciprocal asymptotic isoviscous pressure has certain advantages over the conventional pressure-viscosity coefficient, which is poorly suited for this purpose. The first detailed review of piezoviscous models for low pressures is provided. A simulation code that is apparently stable for all realistic pressure-viscosity response was utilized with diverse piezoviscous models and model liquids to develop a satisfactory definition of αfilm that reads αfilm=[1−exp(−3)]∕[∫03∕α*μ(0)dp∕μ(p)]; 1∕α*=∫0∞μ(0)dp∕μ(p). In the case of μ=μ0exp(αp),αfilm=α and formulas are provided for other models.

In Gibson’s theory of ecological visual perception, “affordance” is perhaps the most controversial concept. Concrete meaning of affordance should be researched adequately. According to Gibson’s original theories, the concept reflects the relationship between organisms and environment, but it refers to feature of environment itself. Clear definition of affordance is conducive to avoid philosophical relativism.

The aim of this chapter is to offer a neuropsychological approach to dyslexia. Firstly, the definition of dyslexia is addressed, as a specific learning disability that is neuropsychological in origin. Secondly, the clinical manifestations of dyslexia are discussed: academic, cognitive-linguistic, and socio-emotional. Thirdly, the main clinical explanations are explored, based on genetic theories (familial and twin heritability) and neurological theories, mainly neuroanatomical (brain asymmetry, corpus callosum morphology, cerebellar morphology, and variations in grey/white matter) and neurophysiological hypotheses (magnocellular system, connectivity between brain areas, and functional activity of brain areas). Finally, the main bases of an adequate neuropsychological intervention are detailed, such as training in visual perception, auditory perception, phonological processing, and orthographic processing.

This aim of this paper is to determine whether the expansion of cyberjustice will improve or impede access to justice for individuals who are homeless. We begin with a detailed review of the current literature on cyberjustice, followed by our definition of cyberjustice and the role it plays in promoting access to justice. The last section, which is more exploratory in nature, offers a number of informal proposals for answering the question of whether cyberjustice, in its present forms, can help to meet the legal needs of homeless persons. Further research will be done in order to evaluate those answers.

The central western Argentinean basins of Rio Blanco, Calingasta-Uspallata and western Paganzo, enclose the most complete marine successions used for examining the Carboniferous-Permian boundary in Gondwana. A detailed review of the key stratigraphical sections has allowed the identification of the latest Carboniferous assemblages; NBG, Interval megafloristic Zone and DM (Raistrickia densa-Convolutispora muriornata) Palynological Zone in the lower part, and the earliest Permian T-S (Tivertonia jachalensis-Streptorhynchus inaequiornatus) invertebrate Zone and FS (Pakhapites fusus-Vittatina subsaccata) Palynological Zone in the upper part. This diagnostic mega/microflora and marine invertebrate paleontological evidence provides a biostratigraphical framework for the definition of the Carboniferous-Permian boundary inside the basins of central western Argentina.

The article considers the problems of interpreting the concept of "extremism." Due to the fact that there are no legislative provisions of this term in the Russian Federation, there is a problem of defining extremism as a phenomenon both in the legal and scientific field, which demonstrates relevance of the research. Historical formation of the term, its first references in scientific and political discourse have been considered in detail. The article gives a detailed analysis of the definition of extremism in a legal aspect of domestic and foreign legislation, much attention being given to the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating the concept into the legislation. The author discussed the issue that manifestation of extremism and punitive measures be subject to different legal and regulatory instruments. A detailed review of scientific interpretations of the term by domestic and foreign researchers has been given. The author highlighted and compared different approaches to understanding it. As a result of the analysis, the author’s own definition of the concept has been provided, which takes into account all the aspects, advantages, and disadvantages of the previously described interpretations according to the results of the study. This original definition can provide a deeper and more comprehensive study of the phenomenon of extremism itself and will provide an opportunity of more careful approach to developing methods and technologies to overcome extremism.

Data visualization through the formation of a scene on the screen of a Hi-Tech- (HT)-device is increasingly attracting the attention of specialists in the field of computer science and software. This is due to the fact that the visibility of the visualized information is important not only for users of HT-devices (a person perceives 80% of information visually (with the eyes)), but also for analytics of decisions made based on the analysis of the visualized data. At the same time, there is a steady tendency in the world to increase the volume of visualized data, and the resource of its perception by a human is limited. The use of the patterns of visual perception of objects associated with the properties of the «golden» section allows one to formulate a visualization criterion for visualized data, and, consequently, an algorithm for the formation of a scene for visualizing data for HT-devices. The purpose of the study is to determine the visualization criterion for visualized data and, based on it, the algorithm for the formation of the data visualization scene, as well as the features of the algorithm functioning. The visualization criterion for visualized data is determined through the coefficient of coverage of the screen area. The optimal value of the coefficient corresponds to the mathematical definition of the «golden» section. As a result of the study, it is necessary to highlight the definition, based on the analysis of the properties of the «golden» section, of the visualization criterion for data visualization, the algorithm for the formation of the data visualization scene and the features of its functioning. The practical value of the results lies in the fact that the proposed criterion represents a mathematical interpretation of the «golden» section property for visualizing data on modern HT-devices of various sizes.

In 2000, the EPRG Workshop on Fitness for Purpose identified a need for a state-of-the-art review on repair techniques for pipelines, focused on the limitations of existing repair techniques, in order to allow the EPRG Design Committee to assess the potential need for further work. The review consisted of four steps: • Definition of a functional specification and of the criteria to meet this specification. • Literature review on existing repair techniques. • Analysis of limitations of existing repair techniques. • Recommendations for future developments. This paper is based on the EPRG report [3] which ended the review. It summarizes the findings of the detailed review of ten repair techniques which were analyzed using the format of the technical specification sheet that was agreed by the Committee.
