Making Harvard Modern is a candid, richly detailed portrait of America's most prominent university from 1933 to the present: seven decades of dramatic change. Early twentieth century Harvard was the country's oldest and richest university, but not necessarily its outstanding one. By the century's end it was widely regarded as the nation's, and the world's, leading institution of higher education. With verve, humor, and insight, Morton and Phyllis Keller tell the story of that rise: a tale of compelling personalities, notable achievement and no less notable academic pratfalls. Their book is based on rich and revealing archival materials, interviews, and personal experience. Young, humbly born James Bryant Conant succeeded Boston Brahmin A. Lawrence Lowell as Harvard's president in 1933, and set out to change a Brahmin-dominated university into a meritocratic one. He hoped to recruit the nation's finest scholars and an outstanding national student body. But the lack of new money during the Depression and the distractions of World War Two kept Conant, and Harvard, from achieving this goal. In the 1950s and 1960s, during the presidency of Conant's successor Nathan Marsh Pusey, Harvard raised the money, recruited the faculty, and attracted the students that made it a great meritocratic institution: America's university. The authors provide the fullest account yet of this transformation, and of the wrenching campus crisis of the late 'sixties. During the last thirty years of the twentieth century, a new academic culture arose: meritocratic Harvard morphed into worldly Harvard. During the presidencies of Derek Bok and Neil Rudenstine the university opened its doors to growing numbers of foreign students, women, African- and Asian-Americans, and Hispanics. Its administration, faculty, and students became more deeply engaged in social issues; its scientists and professional schools were more ready to enter into shared commercial ventures. But worldliness brought its own conflicts: over affirmative action and political correctness, over commercialization, over the ever higher costs of higher education. This fascinating account, the first comprehensive history of a modern American university, is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the present state and future course of higher education.

In 2001 I was invited to give a public lecture at the Centre for the Study of the History of the Twentieth Century, a scholarly research institute within the University of Paris. The invitation was extended by Professor Stephane Dufoix, who writes on the internment of enemy aliens in World War II, one of my academic specialisations. However, I was not asked to speak about this area of expertise. Indeed, it turned out to be a ‘Don't mention the war’ event. Rather, Professor Dufoix and his colleagues were fascinated by Pauline Hanson and were interested in an Australian perspective on the rise of extreme right-wing populism and the Down Under equivalent of the French les laissés-pour-compte (‘those left behind’) or les paumés (‘the losers’).

The recent publication by Armando Verde of a collection of documents on the Pisan Studio (1473-1503) has been recognized as a major contribution to the cultural history of Florence in the late Quattrocento. The yield from years of painstaking research in Florentine and Pisan libraries and archives is made available in four massive volumes, which document the history of the university after its transfer from Florence to Pisa in 1473. Verde has identified the professors who taught, and the 1600 students who were taught, at Pisa and Florence; he has also provided documentation, largely from archival sources, concerning the faculty and the student body: their background and education, their academic and professional careers. He has also collected information on more than one thousand young scholars who were identified in the Florentine tax records (catasto) of 1480 as having been enrolled in schools.

As a young man Stanisław Kryński, our Polish scholar, intended to devote his life to Roman Law. The fact may be surprising as Kryński received a great deal of attention thanks to his Polish translations of English poetry and the first volume of The history of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon. The first archival research shows that in his youth Kryński was really into Roman Law and was even going to do his doctorate on “Iudicum familiae erciscundae in a Classic Roman Law”. He became the assistant of the professor Ignacy Koschembahr-Łyskowski while studying at the Faculty of Law and State Science at the University of Warsaw. The professor became his academic mentor and enabled him to serve an academic apprenticeship in Rome in 1938. The outbreak of the Second World War pulled the rug from under Kryński’s feet. But still, the skills and knowledge acquired in Warsaw were extremely valuable when he lectured Roman Law at the Polish Faculty of Law in Oxford in the years 1944–1946. After returning to Poland, he became a higher education lecturer at SGH Warsaw School of Economics and at Catholic University of Lublin. He did not carry on the research into Roman Law.

This article discusses the history of the formation and development of teaching Persian language and literature in the Crimea in the first half of the twentieth century, points to the transition from episodic teaching of the Persian language in classical madrasas to the provision of academic education in the first university of Crimea. Despite the constant transformations of the university and its structural subdivisions, the Persian language department continued to work from 1921 to 1929. Professor Philonenko was the constant leader of the Persian direction throughout this time. When writing the article, the author used rare sources that had not been widely spread in the scientific community before.

Resumen:  Este trabajo tiene la intención de reconstruir la historia de la historiografía de la Universidad italiana de los últimos cien años. Desde los primeros intentos de principios del siglo XX en algunas de las universidades más antiguas por crear organismos y estructuras para la investigación en la educación superior, la obra recorre las etapas más importantes de un itinerario donde poco a poco se han multiplicado las oportunidades para la discusión entre los estudiosos de toda la península. Desde los años noventa del siglo pasado dicha investigación sin lugar a dudas vivió un momento de especial florecimiento y renovación de cuyo trabajo se da ampliamente cuenta. Sobre la base de un considerable número de conferencias organizadas en varias ciudades italianas y de una cantidad notable de producciones científicas sobre el tema de la educación superior en Italia, se analizan los avances metodológicos más importantes y las principales perspectivas de investigación y se descubren nuevas e interesantes categorías hermenéuticas.Abstract: his paper intends to reconstruct a history of the Italian university historiography of the last hundred years. Since the early attempts of the early twentieth century started in some of the oldest universities to create organisms for research and structures in higher education, the work retraces the most important stages of a process in which have progressively offer many opportunities for discussion between experts in this sector of the entire Peninsula. Since the nineties of the last century these researches have undoubtedly experienced a moment of particular flowering and renewal whose work gives ample account. This chapter reviews the books Reshaping the University, The Rise of the Regulated Market in Higher Education (2014), by David Palfreyman and Ted Tapper; Reengineering the University: How to be Mission Centered, Market Smart and Market Conscious (2016), by William F. Massy; and Designing the New American University (2015), by Michael M. Crow and William B. Dabars. All three texts are concerned with similar issues, but Reshaping the University analyses them within the history of policymaking in Britain, mainly England, since about 1960. The other two books establish ideal-type universities known as ‘the traditional university’ and ‘generic public university’. All of the authors argue that the academic barons have ignored many of the market signals—or they have misread them. The result is that in elevating ‘abstract knowledge’ beyond problem-solving, and in placing individual and institutional reputation above public service, universities are neglecting their primary responsibilities.

Proposal for the Introduction of the Trimester System – Proposal by Faculty of Law of the University of Debrecen to Earl János Zichy, Minister of Religion and Public Education. The Faculty of Law of the University of Debrecen in the last period of the World War I. made a proposal in order to divide the school year to three semester. It was a strange source of the history of the Hungarian higher education. Based on this document can be cognizable the real life and thinking of the students of the university who came back from the war and of the professors who met with them the first time. The trimestrial system of the higher education was favoured by the students too, but it wasn’t able to come to real because the collapse of the Monarchy.

I first read The Emergence of the American University as a graduate student nearly twenty years ago while contemplating writing a dissertation on patronage and the post-1945 university. I have consulted it innumerable times since, and I remain impressed by its ambitious scope, careful research, and elegant prose. Lawrence R. Veysey did his doctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley in the late 1950s and early 1960s and I have always wondered if his interest in the history of the university stemmed from the changes that occurred on campuses in the years after World War II. As he acknowledged in footnotes, Veysey knew about such postwar developments as the creation of semiautonomous research institutes; although he did not mention it, he surely was aware that the federal government had become a significant new patron of the postwar university. But according to Veysey, the structure of the American university, its relations of power and the ideas that animated it had been set by 1910 and did not vary significantly after that. By that time, leading universities embodied elements from each of the four intellectual strands that Veysey argued had vied for institutional dominance at the turn of the twentieth century: utilitarianism, “pure” research, liberal culture, and mental discipline. They had become, according to Veysey, institutional hodgepodges. On any American campus could be found “pockets of excitement over research, islands of devotion to culture, and segments of adherence to the aim of vocational service,” Veysey wrote, and any institution's budget might include “boathouses, landscaping, student housing, and gymnasiums as well as “book purchases and library construction.”

Abstract The growing number of foreign applicants looking forward to getting education in Ukrainian medical universities makes us find the ways how to improve and make effective the pre-professional training system of foreign medical applicants for further education. The article deals with the issues of the history of formation and development of the preprofessional training system of foreign medical applicants in Ukraine. On the ground of the electronic databases of the official websites of higher educational establishments, the data on years of opening first offices of the dean, departments and preparatory faculties for foreign medical applicants in Ukrainian medical universities are analyzed and systematized. Also the data on the setting up preparatory faculties at other universities who carry out licensed training of foreign students of the medical profile are presented. The data on the operating and management of such institutions in the system of the University administration are generalized. It’s revealed that during the years of its functioning the pre-professional training has changed, in particular the system was commercialized and the institutions involved in training foreign applicants have been reorganized. The modern trends in teaching foreign medical students at the preparatory faculties of the Ukrainian medical universities are displayed. Based on the analysis of the data it is concluded that the system of the pre-professional training of foreign medical applicants was set up in the 50s-60s years of the twentieth century. During this time, some positive experience in the preparation of future international medical specialists has been gained. The system of the pre-professional training of foreign medical applicants has been comprehensively improved and an effective system of managing foreign medical applicants has been created.

The scholarship of student affairs has neglected to carefully review its contextual past and, in the process, failed to fully integrate historical research into practice. The story of Thyrsa Wealtheow Amos and the history of the Dean of Women’s Program at the University of Pittsburgh,1919–41, helps us to reflect on the true reality of our work in higher education. Although seemingly a time in the distant past, Thyrsa Amos embodied the spirit of student personnel administration that shines ever so bright to thisd ay. The purpose of this research is to provide some of thatcontext and remind us of the values that serve as foundations of the profession.
