This book assesses American, Canadian, and Swedish legal challenges to the explosive spread of pornography and its contribution to violence against women within their significantly different democratic systems and constructs a political and legal theory for effectively challenging the sex industry under law. The obstacles are exposed as more ideological and political than strictly legal, although they often play out in the legal arena. The pornography industry is documented to exploit vulnerable populations in making its materials. A thorough analytical review of empirical studies that use complementing methods demonstrates that using pornography substantially contributes to consumers becoming more sexually aggressive, on average desensitizing them and contributing to a demand for more subordinating, aggressive, and degrading materials. Consumers often wish to imitate pornography with unwilling partners; many demand sex from prostituted people, who have few or no alternatives. Most young men regularly consume pornography. Legal challenges to the harms are shown to be more effective under legal systems that promote equality and when the laws empower those most harmed, in contrast to state-enforced regulations (e.g., criminal obscenity laws). Drawing on feminist theory, among others, this book argues that pornography is among the linchpins of sex inequality, contending that a civil society forum can empower those harmed, with representatives who have more substantial incentives to address them. This book explains why democracies fail to address the harms of pornography and offers a political and legal theory for making the necessary changes. The insights can be applied to other intractable problems of hierarchy.

The aim of the study is to conduct a structured review of literature on the antecedents of organizational ambidexterity by reconciling the mixed outcomes produced by the extant literature. This study offers some theoretical insights into the divergent views of authors on these factors by analysing the empirical studies done in the literature. This paper systematically analyses the extant literature on the factors affecting organizations' ambidexterity, using meta-analysis and the theory, context, characteristics, and methodology (TCCM) framework. Forty-three research papers across various journals that discussed the correlation of the variables with organizational ambidexterity were selected. The sample size was 17,383, and 20 variables were selected for the analysis. The results revealed that two variables showed high levels of heterogeneity. The implications of this study are relevant to the present business scenario and of substantial interest to scholars, as they provide a more detailed understanding of the very foundation of organizational ambidexterity.

Policy advocacy by nonprofits has attracted substantial scholarly interest in recent years. Although considerable empirical studies have examined factors influencing nonprofit participation in policy advocacy, the existing evidence remains inconsistent as to what factors influence nonprofits to engage in policy advocacy and to what extent. The present study conducts a meta-analysis to quantitatively synthesize existing studies on the organizational antecedents of nonprofit advocacy engagement. Through systematically reviewing 46 studies and aggregating 559 effect sizes on 17 organizational predictors, the study finds organizational size, professionalization, board support, constituent involvement, knowledge about laws, government funding, private donations, foundation funding, collaboration, and negative policy environment have positive and significant relationships with a nonprofit’s level of advocacy engagement. The study contributes a clear knowledge base to guide future nonprofit advocacy research and practice.

We may know pornography when we see it, but the business of pornography is a surprisingly elusive subject. Reliable figures about the industry are difficult to come by and widely disputed, but one matter that is hardly debatable is that pornography is a major and ubiquitous enterprise. Porn allegedly accounts for one-third of all internet traffic currently, though the data about actual consumption is unclear. Reports in recent years have suggested that 70 million individuals visit porn sites every week; that among viewers aged 18-24, women watch more porn than men; and that among middle-aged, white-collar workers, three-quarters of men and half of women have admitted to looking at pornography websites while at work. While debates and emotions around porn can run high, there is a crucial need for reliable information and rational conversation. In this book, Shira Tarrant parses the wide range of statistics that we have on the pornography industry, sorting myth from reality in an objective, fascinating and knowledgeable fashion. She looks at ongoing political controversies around the industry, the feminist porn wars, the views of the religious right, the history of pornography, landmark legal cases, and the latest in medical research. The Pornography Industry also explains the industry basics -who works in porn, why people become performers, how much they earn, and what happens on a porn set. It further delves into important questions such as: how many teenagers watch porn and should we worry about it? What is porn piracy and can it be stopped? What can the industry do about sexist and racist pornography? Does porn cause violence against women? Can people become addicted to porn? Is watching porn the same as infidelity? By presenting competing perspectives in an even-handed way, The Pornography Industry will enable readers to explore these provocative issues and make their own best decisions about the debates.

This study analyzed the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of firms with their Corporate Financial Performance (CFP) based on contextual content analysis. The study forge ahead to compare the outcomes of various conceptual and empirical studies that deals with CSR and CFP from within and outside the domicile of Nigeria. The findings from the previous studies showed conflicting results or outputs (i.e. many positive outcomes, some negative results while very few showed neutral relationship between CSR and CFP of firms). Therefore, this study is of the opinion that there is a positive cordiality between CSR and CFP because more than 50% of the authorities/scholars in the field proved it conceptually and empirically that there is positive relationship among the two concepts (i.e. CSR and CFP). As such, the issue of CSR should be given a more consideration by all the parties to it (i.e. Employees, Employers, Government, Researchers, Management and the Public at large). Since, it yields positive impact to the CFP of Firms as such a dedicated agency or commission should be established to be monitoring the Firms toward real implementation of CSR.

Although empirical studies have concluded that political leaders in democratic systems often respond to mass unrest by expanding the welfare state, most of this research fails to explain adequately why the state responds as it does. I test the validity of pluralist and social control theories of state response by examining black insurgency in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Using pooled time-series analysis, I estimate the relationship between state AFDC recipient rates, state incarceration rates, and black political violence, testing a series of specific hypotheses that distinguish between these two competing theories. The results lend much support to the social control characterization of state response and may help explain trends in welfare and criminal justice policies over the last two decades.

While the debates on prostitution usually focus on the different legislative approaches or the so-called choices of persons in prostitution, this article wants to give light to an invisible aspect of the system of prostitution: its impact on youth. Through research, data and facts, we want to show that it is urgent to listen to young women’s voices as they are detrimentally affected by an industry based on violence, domination and inequality. Based on a study conducted on young people in the South of France, at the borders with Spanish prostitution clubs, outcomes and analysis clearly demonstrate that prostitution is not only a form of male violence against women, it is also a system and an industry that contribute to gender inequality, to an unequal and negative representation of sexuality for young people, and to reduced choices in sexuality. Its impacts are far more detrimental than we can see, because they are invisible and entrenched in mentalities. Today, young people, and especially young women, are directly targeted by the system of prostitution. Rape culture, economic conditions, migration paths and sexual violence in the childhood are part of the root causes which explain the highest vulnerability of youth to the sex industry. Youth has become a strong commercial value for the sex industry and for the men buying sex; the sex industry does not discriminate on age and uses the existing laws tolerating pimping and prostitution to continue to flourish. The article points out that despite the politically correct trend which supports a neo-liberal approach to prostitution, young people are taking a stance against the sex industry and are strongly supporting the Nordic model approach; this raises an important question—Are we ready to listen to them?

This topic is actual in the context of high levels of violence against drug addicted women and women in sex industry and insufficient opportunity for them to apply for relevant social services in Ukraine. The article considers the functional components of the complex preventive and rehabilitation technology "Women Initiating New Goals of Safety", developed by a group social intervention of the Columbia University (USA) in order to reduce the risk of violence against women with drug dependence. This technology was adapted and applied for a pilot project to verify its effectiveness in Ukraine. The sample of the study consisted of 20 women with drug addiction who have experience of violence against them. In addition, in order to assess the qualitative component of the WINGS technology, an in-depth interview was conducted by 2 experts (psychologist and social worker) of an independent governmental organization to provide services to HIV-infected people, who had the experience of conducting an intervention using the method "WINGS". Another tool for evaluating the qualitative characteristics of this technology was the sessions of two focus groups of 12 participants who had the experience of passing WINGS as clients. A separate plan for security was developed for women who works in sex industry, taking into account, that the experience shared by participants in the focus groups of them is unique and significantly different from the experience of other women. Conducted focus groups found elements of quality performance, especially in the security planning and prevention of violence among intimate partners. Providers, who give services to the situation of violence, appreciate their experience of using the WINGS methodology as useful and positive. Pilot studies of using the "WINGS" technology in Ukraine showed results, that allow us to make the previous assumptions about its significant efficiency. At the same time, it helped identify the elements that need to be adapted and refined.

This chapter examines the relationship between transnational law (TL) and feminist legal theory (FLT), focusing on the specific historical and political trajectories advanced by FLT in the transnational context and how they influence understandings of gender, sex, and sexuality in law. It demonstrates how these concepts have come to be understood in women’s human rights campaigns against violence against women (VAW) in both the domestic and global contexts. The chapter sets out how these concepts have been taken up in FLT, which in this overview, includes the poststructural, queer, and postcolonial feminist critiques of these concepts. The chapter then illustrates how in the context of VAW, “solutions” have mainly taken the form of carceral measures and a general tightening of the sexual security regime. The chapter provides a fuller understanding of the transnational effects of FLT and its limitations as a progressive project.

This book analyses two dimensions of judicial decision-making at the World Trade Organisation (WTO): the substantive outcome produced and the judicial style embraced, in cases concerning national measures taken for non-trade objectives. Drawing on legal theory, empirical studies of judicial decision-making and an analysis of all the major non-trade cases of the WTO, the book concludes that the dispute settlement decisions can be understood in light of the fact that the WTO dispute settlement bodies, like other courts, need to legitimise their decisions. Both the substance and style of WTO judicial decision-making contribute in this regard. On the substantive side, there is a relatively mixed outcome of cases, in terms of the interpretations chosen. The WTO Appellate Body’s interpretations neither consistently favour trade interests nor do they systematically enhance the regulatory space of WTO Members. The dispute settlement bodies also have a distinct judicial style that relies on discursive (rather than institutional) sources of authority and is predominantly formalist.

Introduction. The pandemic situation, the rapid transition to distance learning forms - all this was a serious test for participants in the educational environment. Panic, fear for health and life, as well as fear of social threat, when the previous structures of interaction with the outside world began to be violated accompanied people. This situation can be described as difficult, extreme, taking beyond the normal human experience that affected the whole world, humanity. It can also be defined as a situation related to social entropy (uncertainty), since it is characterized by novelty, contradiction and complexity. We are currently experiencing uncertainty in all spheres of life. External life circumstances, new challenges in terms of self-isolation, distance - destroyed the usual picture of the human world. A person is also forced to overcome "personal" uncertainty, while experiencing a dissonant state in the cognitive, emotional, motivational - value spheres. The uncertainty of the situation is also related to unpredictability, to the inability to predict development, as well as to uncontrollability, that is, the ability to manage the development of events. It should be noted that in the educational environment there is the same uncertainty, difficulties and fears that are currently experienced not only by the adult population, i.e. parents of students and teachers, but also by students. In our view, overcoming the difficult and uncertain situation of pandemic and conscious adoption of distance learning forms will be related to the peculiarity of the development of personal qualities of the younger generation, among which resistance will be most relevant to the possibilities of positive overcoming.Materials and Methods. The article should be an analytical review, where an attempt was made to systematize scientific psychological and pedagogical knowledge on the problem of difficulties and restrictions in various structural components of the educational environment and find resources to overcome the uncertain, difficult situation associated with the consequences of the pandemic and the introduction of distance learning. The main method of studying this problem is the theoretical analysis of information in the works of domestic and foreign authors, which presents theoretical and empirical studies on the introduction, opportunities and risks of distance learning forms, as well as attitudes to it.Results. Problems related to introduction of remote forms of education in structural components of educational environment are considered and analyzed; there are presented models of distance learning, allowing to ensure appropriate quality of trainees training. The results of a survey of students of various faculties of Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky regarding difficulties and attitude to distance learning format during the period of self-isolation are given.Discussion and Conclusions. The conclusion is based on the need for further theoretical analysis and synthesis of available scientific research on the implementation, opportunities and risks of remote forms of training. Based on the results of a few psychological studies of domestic and foreign authors, it is proved necessary to further study the problem of the influence of remote forms of education on the personality of students, as well as the finding of factors, resources, mechanisms that contribute to the informed adoption and choice of adequate forms and strategies of behavior by participants in the educational process. The importance of finding the personal and environmental resources of a person when emerging from difficult, uncertain situations related to the digitalization of training is justified.
