This chapter offers thoughts about origin and function of the Jovian Narrative. The Jovian Narrative is a composite text in which various narratives about Julian and Jovian circulating in northern Mesopotamia and the Syriac-speaking world were combined. The Jovian Narrative is part of the Syriac tradition of Christian discourse of imagination, and the author is likely to have made use of various Syriac narrative traditions. Edessa is in all probability the Christian intellectual center where most of these texts were produced, and the Jovian Narrative most likely had its origin in Edessa. For the composition of his text, the composer is likely to have made use of various Syriac narrative traditions as well as historical information. The compilation of the Jovian Narrative as a cohesive text should probably be seen against the background of the religious and geopolitical policy of the emperor Justinian (527–565). Under his reign the Roman–Persian military conflict flared up again in all vehemence after many years of peaceful coexistence between the two empires. Furthermore, the Jovian Narrative intervenes on an eschatological level in the conflict between Chalcedonians and non-Chalcedonians in the reign of Justinian. Jovian is presented as the eschatological realization of the ideal Christian emperor, who represents a return to the orthodox ideal as it existed under Constantine.

Environmental contamination by 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), historically the most widely used secondary explosive, is a long-standing problem in former military conflict areas and at manufacturing and decommissioning plants. In field test plots at a former explosives manufacturing site, removal of TNT and dinitrotoluenes (DNTs) was observed following periods of tillage. Since tilling of soils has previously been shown to alter the microbial community, this study was aimed at understanding how the microbial community is altered in soils with historical contamination of nitro explosives from the former Barksdale TNT plant. Samples of untilled pristine soils, untilled TNT-contaminated soils and tilled TNT-contaminated soils were subjected to targeted amplicon sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA genes in order to compare the structure of their bacterial communities. In addition, metagenomic data generated from the TNT tilled soil was used to understand the potential functions of the bacterial community relevant to nitroaromatic degradation. While the biodiversity dropped and the Burkholderiales order became dominant in both tilled and untilled soil regardless of tillage, the bacterial community composition at finer taxonomic levels revealed a greater difference between the two treatments. Functional analysis of metagenome assembled genome (MAG) bins through systematic review of commonly proposed DNT and TNT biotransformation pathways suggested that both aerobic and anaerobic degradation pathways were present. A proposed pathway that considers both aerobic and anaerobic steps in the degradation of TNT in the scenario of the tilled contaminated soils is presented.

As a literary realist Twain was a practicing empiricist; as a humorist he was a practicing philosophical idealist. Often the two intellectual postures existed side by side within the same work—in A Tramp Abroad, for instance—but they did not enjoy a peaceful coexistence. As a consequence his career took on a pattern of great significance. In Huckleberry Finn he carried commonsense empiricism as far as it could go. In A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, a genuinely pivotal work, he discovered, and contended with, not only empiricism’s radical limits but its inherent contradictions as well. Hence he evolved his peculiar (and perverse) form of idealism, of which The Mysterious Stranger is the (unfinished) consummation.

Although Japanese writers who experienced living in Indonesia in 1940-1945 witnessed the issue of racial disparity as the reality of a European colony, they were unable to depict it sufficiently because they were expected to portray a peaceful coexistence between Japanese and Southeast Asian peoples as the ideal picture of the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. This paper explores the possibility of evaluating literary works written under the notion of the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere by analyzing Jun Takami`s short story “Shominzoku” (July 1941) using Marie Louise Pratt`s “contact zone” as analytical tool. “Shominzoku” poses the problem of Japanese positioning in European colony; of how the protagonist sees himself and others, and how he wants to be seen by other races. Examining the narrative technique of the story to view Japanese positioning in the Netherlands East Indies, this paper argues that although “Shominzoku” can be evaluated as a criticism towards the notion of Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, it is actually an ambiguous work due to a reflection of the persisting idea that Japanese is, indeed, a superior race.

This study compared the responses of a group of 132 medical professionals and a group of 129 allied health professionals and the present and ideal role and function of the rehabilitation counselor in the medical setting. Both groups rated the ideal function significantly higher than the present function with one exception. Both groups perceived the ideal and present functions to be more alike than different. When they differed, the allied health group emphasized more traditional roles on the present scale, while the medical group emphasized more psychological functions on the ideal scale. The results are discussed particularly as it relates to role expansion.

Abstract Considering Victorian presentation of women as angelic, that is, spiritual, beings, it is rather surprising how much their presence was manifested by material objects. Baskets of needlework, tea equipage and novels lying around in a parlour were an unmistakable sign of the house being occupied by women. Indeed, my contention is, the objects did not clutter Victorian interiors, either real or imagined, merely for practical reasons or to produce the “reality effect.” They are a material representation of the immaterial and function as metaphors for angelic women’s spiritual qualities. Rather than functioning merely as details to enhance the illusion of the real (and thus as elements of style) or simply reflecting the Victorian world (and thus as empty forms), material objects are essential in constructing a middle-class (feminine) identity. My paper concentrates on Rhoda Broughton’s Not wisely, but too well and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South with an attempt to show how objects help construct a feminine ideal and, simultaneously, reveal the ideal to be just a construction. Broughton’s Kate Chester and Gaskell’s Margaret Hale find themselves in situations where their middle-class status might be compromised. Still, they both manage to reassert their position through effectively manipulating the signs of middle-class respectability. The “flimsy and useless” things they surround themselves with point to their “essentially feminine” qualities. Yet, the very superfluity of the objects reveals their relation to the characters’ economic status. They are, then, the site where the material and immaterial meet, where the borders between the economic world and the domestic world blur.

Impacted teeth with complete root formation in adult patients is challenging for both the surgeon and orthodontist. Described for more than 40 years and still rarely used, the technique of tooth alveolus repositioning has excellent treatment results in these cases. Objective: To report the case of a impacted canine in an adult patient, not responsive to standard surgical orthodontic traction, managed through the technique of tooth alveolus repositioning. Case report: Male patient, 28 years old, with presence of tooth #23 impacted and with no success to standard surgical orthodontic traction. To return the tooth in position and function the treatment performed was repositioning the alveolar block. After two years of follow-up the tooth stays in the ideal position, without root resorption and with pulp vitality. Conclusion: The tooth alveolus repositioning proved to be a good treatment option, restoring function and esthetics and reaching the expectations of both the patient and professionals.

Background: Condylomata accuminata is a sexually transmitted disease, appeared as verrucous or cauliflower-like papules or warts in the anogenital. It is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), mostly type 6 and 11. The ideal therapy should be simple, inexpensive, effective, does not cause side effects, and can be used by the patient himself. Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) 5% cream therapy for perianal condylomata accuminata treatment. Case: A 24-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of warts around the anal area that multiplied in the past 3 weeks. The acetowhite test was positive. The patient was diagnosed with condylomata accuminata perianal. The patient received 5-FU 5% cream, applied 3 times a week to the lesions for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks, no new warts were found. Discussion: 5-FU 5% cream is a therapeutic option for perianal wart lesions that easily applied, inexpensive, effective, does not cause side effects, and can be used by the patient himself. It is well known as an antimetabolite with a cytotoxic effect that occurs through a mechanism of disruption in the normal synthesis and function of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). The treatment with 5-FU 5% cream 3 times a week for 5 weeks provided good results with no side effects were reported. Conclusion: The application of 5-FU 5% cream was a modality of self-application treatment that effective for perianal condylomata accuminata.

This chapter stems from the observation that physical eloquence is often relegated to lesser importance than its linguistic counterpart in Senecan declamation, especially when compared to the wealth of information we have on Cicero’s use of gesture. However, actio remains a pivotal element of Roman declamation. To draw attention to this element, this chapter outlines several types of bodily movement and vocal modulation which Seneca attributes to his declaimers in the Controversiae and Suasoriae. In so doing, it not only describes the practice and function of these actions but also explores how they build into the characteristics of Senecan declamation, which range from the use of personae and sententiae to prose rhythm and the figure of the ideal orator. The analysis ultimately explains why declaimers’ gestures, which are often dismissed as ‘excessive’ by modern readers, acted as effective tools for communication within their original context.

AbstractPhysical activity and nutrient intake are important determinants of health throughout life. Many of the alterations in physiological structure and function that occur with age may result from disuse and disability as well as from diets deficient in energy, protein or other specific nutrients. Although a healthy diet can provide significant health benefits, diet alone, is not sufficient to provide optimal health, nor protect us from the hazards of sedentary habits. Nor is physical activity alone. The ideal combines sufficient exercise and a healthy diet.
