Phonetic behavior in proficient bilinguals

This chapter discusses a selection of the literature on the phonetic behavior of proficient bilinguals. It examines both perception and production, and it focuses on what is known about a particular bilingual group: Catalan–Spanish bilinguals. This population has received a lot of attention because it allows for the exploration of bilingual individuals with different experience profiles who reside in a speech community where both languages enjoy similar social status and are thus likely to be used by any member of the community in any given day. Phonetic research on this bilingual population has been concerned mostly with addressing the following question: What is the role of the age of first exposure to an additional language in the manner in which a bilingual will represent and process this language? Research on this population has sparked a wealth of investigations on other populations in order to address this question from multiple perspectives.

Portuguese is a native language of only a handful of people in Mozambique. However, it successfully plays the role of a common language of communication in the field of politics and economics. At the same time, it is a determinant of social status and, in the world of literature, it gives one the opportunity to break through to the readers around the Globe. Portuguese in Mozambique presents many differences from the European standard, and the specific characteristics of this variant can be found in the texts of Mia Couto. The purpose of this article is to present the differences between the variant of Mozambique and the European model of Portuguese, mainly in the field of morphosyntax, observed in the texts of Mia Couto. The marked differences can be seen, among others, in the use of prepositions, order of pronominal elements, in the structure of periphrastic and passive constructions, and the selection of verbal arguments. The features are highly repetitive, but at the same time, they occur quite irregularly, together with the structures accepted by the standard. It is, therefore, difficult to speak of a systematic language variant, but surely it is on its way to be established.

The paper focuses on the quantitative and qualitative features of the variants of unstressed variables /i:/, /u:/, /e:/, /o:/, /æ:/ and /a:/ in spontaneous broadcast media as compared with spontaneous Vilnius speech. The research also explores how the variants of the variables are located on the spectrum, whether the speaker’s type (his linguistic education) has any impact on the length and tenseness of the variants.The research was conducted using for acoustic analysis the sound analysis program PRAAT. The informants were six Vilnius city dwellers and six radio and TV hosts. The data of the Vilnius city dwellers’ speech drew on targeted sampling from the database “Vilnius speaking”. The hosts were chosen from a representative Corpus of Broadcast Media. The empirical data consists of 840 variants of unstressed variables /i:/, /u:/, /e:/, /o:/, /æ:/ and /a:/, equally selected from each speaker’s spontaneous speech.The survey has revealed that the quantitative and qualitative features of the variants of unstressed variables /i:/, /u:/, /e:/, /o:/, /æ:/ and /a:/ used in the hostsʼ spontaneous speech are very similar to those used by spontaneously speaking Vilnius city dwellers. This leads to a conclusion that Vilnius speech is more firmly entrenched in the prestigious public discourse (broadcast media) than the codified standard language. In our speech community Vilnius speech may function as a model of exemplary pronunciation, thus strengthening the role of Vilnius speech in public discourse and at the same time weakening the positions of standardisation ideology. The investigation has confirmed that phonetic features traditionally assigned to Vilnius speech are erroneously associated only with private discourse and speakers of low social status; however, these features inevitably gain their highest value when used in broadcast media.

What does it mean to be a mentor? Is there a common understanding or can a mentor be defined according to the context mentoring acts occur in? This issue of M/C Journal explores these questions in light of the societal and cultural context we live in today. The modern world is being transformed by complex and changing societal and cultural aspects, thus mentoring is an evolving notion (Bearman et al.). However mentorship is something that many people experience in their lives and accordingly it can be considered as a transformative phenomenon worthy of ongoing consideration.The term mentor first emerged in Greek mythology, when Odysseus entrusted his son Telemachus to his friend Mentor for guidance, support and care. Traditionally the role of a mentor is that of nurturing, guiding, protecting, coaching, and supporting another. Since Telemachus’s experience of mentoring was reported in Homer’s Odyssey, the conception of the act of mentorship and the role of mentors has grown in relevance within modern society. The concept of mentorship has proven readily transferable to a range of contemporary contexts in education, business, the arts and more.Mentoring is realised in different forms and locations: it occurs in social groups; it exists in major corporations and is common within communities to bring people together. Mentoring is generally viewed as a strategy to encourage personal and professional growth, thus the phenomenon of the mentor has the opportunity to permeate our everyday lives in both a conscious and unconscious sense. Mentorship can be either informal or formal.  Informal mentorship is naturally occurring and is often focused on a need identified by the mentee (Lentz and Allen). Formal mentorships however, are arranged partnerships that often arise from a formal program and have specific goals to achieve (Kwan and Lopez-Real). Traditional mentoring tends to conform to a hierarchical structure where the more experienced mentor holds the power balance, however more contemporary forms of mentorship are underpinned by mutuality and are reciprocal in nature.  This brief collection of articles within this issue highlights mentoring in a variety of mentorship circumstances. The articles describe and provide examples of a variety of mentorships. Those that are hierarchal, reciprocal or asymmetrical and those that are formal and informal.  In the feature article, Angelina Ambrosetti explores the rise of the teacher as mentor and how this image is portrayed through film.  She questions whether film provides a realistic image of teachers and whether all teachers can be considered as a mentor to their students. Reader response theory is used to explore the characteristics and actions of teachers in a selection of recent popular films that portray the teacher as a mentor.  The concept of cooperative mentorship is investigated within the context of family and the use of social media in the article written by Milovan Savic, Anthony McCosker and Paula Geldens. Social media use and its impact upon the family structure is a common topic that is negatively framed in the media. Although the family structure is seen as hierarchical, the authors discuss the need to flip this towards a more asymmetrical arrangement whereby social media use is negotiated through positive processes.  Peer mentoring is having an increased presence in different forms within higher education. Denise Beckton, Ulrike Sturm and Donna Lee Brien examine the notion of peer to peer mentoring within an online postgraduate course. They discuss how peer mentoring inadvertently occurred between the participants whilst they engaged in course related tasks, and how this provided opportunities for an organic form of support and collaboration to occur. In examining mentorship in the 21st century, Diane Lorenzetti and Bonnie Lashewicz ask the question: Is mentorship simply in vogue or has it become indispensable for personal and professional development? They examine a selection of articles published in the New York Times that portray mentorship and delve into meanings of mentoring that are derived from them. They compare these real accounts of informal, organic mentoring with the meanings we academically ascribe to mentorship. Mentoring within a reality television context facilitates, in many instances, an opportunity in which to rise into the creative class. In her article, Carla Rocavert delves into the role of the mentor as a plot device in scripted television and popular film. She examines both the good and evil sides of mentoring and how the roles mentors play provide a setting for entertainment.This short collection has indicated just a few of the experiences and representations of mentoring currently emerging. There is no doubt that these forms of relational learning are becoming more diverse and important, as collaborative, informal and networked learning opportunities continue to grow. AbstractImmunosuppression permits graft survival after transplantation and consequently a longer and better life. On the other hand, it increases the risk of infection, for instance with cytomegalovirus (CMV). However, the various available immunosuppressive therapies differ in this regard. One of the first clinical trials using de novo everolimus after kidney transplantation [1] already revealed a considerably lower incidence of CMV infection in the everolimus arms than in the mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) arm. This result was repeatedly confirmed in later studies [2–4]. Everolimus is now considered a substance with antiviral properties. This article is based on the expert meeting “Posttransplant CMV infection and the role of immunosuppression”. The expert panel called for a paradigm shift: In a CMV prevention strategy the targeted selection of the immunosuppressive therapy is also a key element. For patients with elevated risk of CMV, mTOR inhibitor-based immunosuppression is advantageous as it is associated with a significantly lower incidence of CMV events.

In the current scenario of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), power consumption is the major issue associated with nodes in WSN. LEACH technique plays a vital role of clustering in WSN and reduces the energy usage effectively. But LEACH has its own limitation in order to search cluster head nodes which are randomly distributed over the network. In this paper, ERA-NFL- BA algorithm is being proposed for selects the cluster heads in WSN. This algorithm help in selection of cluster heads can freely transform from global search to local search. At the end, a comparison has been done with earlier researcher using protocol ERA-NFL, which clearly shown that proposed Algorithm is best suited and from comparison results that ERA-NFL-BA has given better performance.

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.
