Despite many inequalities in the world, it is a testament to human technology that modern agriculture is able to feed the 8 billion people on the planet. However, recently extreme weather patterns linked to global warming have been having an adverse effect on crops and farmed animal production, leading to fears about whether agriculture can continue to feed all the humans on the planet. Genome editing looks set to revolutionise agriculture by making it possible to precisely edit the genomes of farm plants and animals rapidly and economically in an unprecedented way. Such editing could be used to create vegetables and meat with enhanced flavour or nutrition. It could also be used to create disease resistant plants and animals, and reduce the use of antibiotics or pesticides. Looking further into the future it might eventually be possible to use genome editing to reconfigure plants or animals to survive in increasingly extreme types of climates. Despite these positive ways of using genome editing in agriculture, concerns have been raised about the safety of food produced from genome edited animals and plants, and potential adverse effects on animal welfare. Another criticism is that genome editing may only benefit giant agribusiness companies, and not ordinary farmers and consumers. Yet against this criticism, one of the revolutionary aspects of genome editing is how easy and economical it is to use, which means that unlike previous GM technologies, there is no reason why it cannot be used in a local, sustainable, and accessible way.

During the last decade of the 20th century the world was exposed to increasing episodes of extreme weather. Figures reveal a 0.6°C rise in average temperatures since records began in 1860, with the 1990s being the warmest decade and 1998 the warmest year. Experts believe that these rising temperatures, or global warming, are in part due to human influences.

Smoking behavior has become an important issue of public health around the world since the last decade. Indonesia is one of the developing countries which has the highest level of cigarette consumption and production. A large number of studies have shown that smoking behavior can cause adverse effects for health, but conversely, the number of smokers increased every year. Nowadays, the trend of smoking behavior has entered the category of younger age between 13 – 15 years old. The purpose of this research is to obtain a description about smoking behavior on people and about the implementation of “no-smoking area” policy in Ajung village, Kalisat district of Jember. This study uses a descriptive research design with observation method. This study was conducted in May 2014. The sample in this study is 56 peoples and 4 elementary schools. Variables researched in this study are the knowledge of smoking adverse effect, smoking activity, the age of first smoking experience, the number of cigarette smoked per day, and “no-smoking area” policy. The results of the study have shown that 60,87% respondents have knowledge about smoking adverse effect toward respiratory disorders,  respondents who have smoked daily activity are about 19.64%, the majority of respondents start smoking at age of 15-19 years, the average of respondents smoking as many as 13 stems in a day, and only 2 elementary schools that disposed to implement the “no-smoking area” policy in their institution. Based on these results, it is recommended the more intensive counseling about the hazards and the adverse effects of smoking behavior from various related institutions (health services, social services). Local governments is suggested to make regulations which aims to implement policy about “no-smoking area” in all institutions.

In the 21st Century, due to challenges created by global warming, nations and individuals have been more concerned with the environment protection at the time and also consumer groups demanded environmentally friendly products, leading to the emergence of a ‘new marketing philosophy’ called Green Marketing. Given the adverse effects and complications of global warming, compliance with green marketing requirements has become almost obligatory for all organizations. Accordingly, consumers, industrial buyers, and suppliers are required to adopt and implement green marketing policies. Besides, the government is required enact stricter regulations to save the world from pollution and its adverse consequences. Green marketing is more suitable for developing countries such as India.

There exists a close link between the natural environment and the world of work. This emphasizes the dependence of the world of work on environmental factors. The world of work does not exist in isolation but hinges on the ecosystem for survival. Climate change and other kinds of ecological squalor have had adverse effects on jobs, the structure of the organisation, work processes, and work efficiency, and with the increase in global warming, these effects are anticipated to be more noticeable in the approaching decades.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has removed the words “climate change” from its 2018- 2022 strategic plan. The new plan does not mention climate, global warming, sea-level rise, extreme weather, or any other terminology associated with scientific projections of rising surface temperatures and their effects. Yet, as a direct result of climate change, it can be demonstrated that overall weather patterns have changed and extreme weather has become more common. This essay, based on what peer-reviewed climate science has already clearly demonstrated, makes the case that climate change is a critical variable for emergency managers to factor into their work. As such, it seeks to answer two basic questions. Why is climate change a growing concern for emergency managers? Exactly what should they do about it?

During the second half of 20th century, a high level of plague incidence in the world was in 1960–1979 and 1990–2009. The significant decrease of infection cases was in 1950–1959, 1980–1989, 2010–2015. It is noticed, that the observed cyclical nature of the alternation of high and low incidence plague’s periods, in many respects related to modern trend of climate fluctuations.


The effective altruism movement consists of a growing global community of people who organize significant parts of their lives around two key ideas, represented in its name. Altruism: If we use a significant portion of the resources in our possession—whether money, time, or talents—with a view to helping others, we can improve the world considerably. Effectiveness: When we do put such resources to altruistic use, it is crucial to focus on how much good this or that intervention is reasonably expected to do per unit of resource expended (for example, per dollar donated). While global poverty is a widely used case study in introducing and motivating effective altruism, if the ultimate aim is to do the most good one can with the resources expended, it is far from obvious that global poverty alleviation is highest priority cause area. In addition to ranking possible poverty-alleviation interventions against one another, we can also try to rank interventions aimed at very different types of outcome against one another. This includes, for example, interventions focusing on animal welfare or future generations. The scale and organization of the effective altruism movement encourage careful dialogue on questions that have perhaps long been there, throwing them into new and sharper relief, and giving rise to previously unnoticed questions. In the present volume, the first of its kind, a group of internationally recognized philosophers, economists, and political theorists contribute in-depth explorations of issues that arise once one takes seriously the twin ideas of altruistic commitment and effectiveness.

Protection of crop and ornamental plants from noxious organisms — insects, nematodes, mites, pathogens and weeds — is indispensable to modern agriculture. Despite intensive control efforts, about 50% of the world's crops are lost to these organisms, at an estimated annual cost of about 400 billion dollars. Ever since the advent of synthetic pesticides in the 1940s, modern crop protection has been largely based on chemical control. Pesticide expenditures are about 20% of total farming input costs, although this figure varies substantially according to crop and region. Mounting environmental concerns and pest control failures have made It increasingly clear that the use of toxic pesticides In agriculture should be drastically reduced all over the world.

AbstractCyanobacteria are important members of lake plankton, but they have the ability to form blooms and produce cyanotoxins and thus cause a number of adverse effects. Freshwater ecosystems around the world have been investigated for the distribution of cyanobacteria and their toxins and the effects they have on the ecosystems. Similar research was performed on the Fehérvárcsurgó reservoir in Hungary during 2018. Cyanobacteria were present and blooming, and the highest abundance was recorded in July (2,822,000 cells/mL). The species present were Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Microcystis flos-aquae, Microcystis wesenbergii, Cuspidothrix issatschenkoi, Dolichospermum flos-aquae, and Snowella litoralis. In July and September, the microcystin encoding gene mcyE and the saxitoxin encoding gene sxtG were amplified in the biomass samples. While a low concentration of microcystin-RR was found in one water sample from July, analyses of Abramis brama and Carassius gibelio caught from the reservoir did not show the presence of the investigated microcystins in the fish tissue. However, several histopathological changes, predominantly in gills and kidneys, were observed in the fish, and the damage was more severe during May and especially July, which coincides with the increase in cyanobacterial biomass during the summer months. Cyanobacteria may thus have adverse effects in this ecosystem.

Psalm 104 is a majestic hymn to creation, a dynamic corollary to the more formal presentation of the creation of the world in Genesis 1. Reflection upon some of the passages provides us with insight into the biblical author’s appreciation for nature, an attitude that needs to inspire us in this age of ecological crisis. Though the biblical text is unaware of such an ecological crisis; nonetheless, passages shine forth that can speak to us in our modern age of global warming and environmental collapse.
