Considerateness

Focusing on the extreme poles of the spectrum of human relationships, this chapter argues that considerateness is the foundation upon which our relationships are to be organized in both the thin, anonymous context of the public space and the thick, intimate context of the family. The first part of the paper, sections I–III, explores the idea that considerateness is the minimum that we owe to one another in the public space. By acting considerately toward strangers we show respect to that which we share as people, namely, to our common humanity. The second part, sections IV–VIII, explores the idea that the family is constituted on a foundation of considerateness. Referring to the particular distribution of domestic burdens and benefits adopted by each family as its “family deal,” I argue that the considerate family deal embodies a distinct, family-oriented notion of fairness. The third part, sections IX–XV, takes up the notion of family fairness, contrasting it with justice.

O artigo discute a apropriação de repartições públicas do Congresso Nacional pordeputados carismáticos desde 2015, para a realização de encontros semanais do Grupo de Oração Beata Elena Guerra. Visando a contextualizar tal rito e o próprio ethos da RCC, selecionamos, como recorte, os encontros realizados em setembro de 2017, por darem maior enfoque à defesa de um modelo tradicional de família, defendido pela Sé Apostólica. A análise das temáticas abordadas e posicionamentos estabelecidos durante os encontros sugerem que oreferido Grupo de Oração – que é também transmitido ao vivo pelas redes sociais – constitui-se não apenas como um rito de louvor e evangelização católica no espaço público, mas possibilita igualmente uma publicização dos deputados e demais atores envolvidos e das pautas que transitam noCongresso Nacional, além de se confgurar como espaço de estratégias e alianças políticas que envolvem até mesmo os agentes de outras denominações religiosas, como os evangélicos. Espaço público.“HERE AGAIN IN UNION”: THE BEATA ELENA GUERRA PRAYER GROUP AND THE CHARISMATIC MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL CONGRESSAbstractThe paper aims at discussing the appropriation of public offices of the National Congress by charismatic deputies since 2015, to hold weekly meetings of the Beata Elena Guerra Prayer Group. By aiming at contextualizing this rite and the ethos of the CCR itself, we selected, as a cutout, the meetings held in September 2017, that give greater focus to the defense of a traditional model of the family, defended by the Apostolic See. The analysis of the themes and positions established during the meetings suggests that the Prayer Group – whichis also live transmitted by social networks – is not only a rite of Catholic praise and evangelization in the public space. It also reinforces the publicity of the deputies and other actors involved as the guidelines that pass in the National Congress, besides of being configured as a space for strategies and political alliances that even involve agents of other religious denominations, such as evangelicals.Keywords: Religion. The third chapter reflects on new youth activism within the wider context of what has been termed ‘the new social movements’. It addresses the broader transnational influence of movements abroad, and shows how new areas for political expression opened up around peace, anti-militarism, environmentalism/nuclear disarmament and sexuality. Late socialist Yugoslav society witnessed the proliferation of a youth arena of civil initiatives and activist citizenship, albeit fragmented and often discordant, which found shelter and support within parts of the existing youth institutional framework. Although the federal Youth League did not explicitly endorse all of the initiatives stemming from the new social movements, it did provide spaces for some of them and increased the visibility of their demands in the public space.

The interest for the care and education of childhood have varied throughout the different historical time. Together with the transformations experienced within families, childhood has gradually and progressively attained meaning and relevance in the social environment. The new moral and spiritual function assumed by the family in the transition to modern times, and which went beyond its traditional function as transmitter of surname and heritage, implied the appearance of new emotions towards childhood at the same time their individuality intensified.At present, childhood acquires important centrality both in the private family space in which its protection, care, assistance and education prevail, rooted in new link of relationship (Burgess, 1972: 6-7), as well as in the public space, social, political, normative and economic. With these ideas, this research aims to historical analysis of the conception of childhood and its education, from ancient times to the present day, within the framework of the family and considering the repercussions that political, social, economic, demographic and cultural changes have had on childhood. La atención y el interés por el cuidado y la educación de la infancia han ido variando a lo largo de las diferentes etapas históricas. Ligada a las transformaciones experimentadas en el seno de las familias, de forma gradual y progresiva la infancia ha ido alcanzando significado y relevancia en el medio social. La nueva función moral y espiritual asumida por la familia en el tránsito hacia los tiempos modernos, y que rebasaba su tradicional función como transmisora de apellido y patrimonio, implicó la aparición de nuevas emociones hacia los menores al tiempo que se intensificaba su individualidad. En la actualidad la infancia adquiere notable centralidad tanto en el espacio privado familiar en el cual prima su protección, cuidado, asistencia y educación, enraizadas en nuevos vínculos de relacionabilidad (Burgess, 1972: 6-7), como también en el espacio público, social, político, normativo y económico. Partiendo de estas premisas, este artículo tiene por finalidad el estudio y análisis histórico de la concepción sobre la infancia y su educación, desde la antigüedad hasta nuestros días, dentro del marco de la familia y considerando las repercusiones que los cambios políticos, sociales, económicos, demográficos y culturales han tenido sobre la misma.

How do people proceed when they cannot act on the basis of reasons, or project likely consequences? How is social order possible? Ullmann-Margalit demonstrates that people have identifiable strategies for making difficult decisions, whether the question is small (what to buy at a supermarket) or big (whether to transform one’s life in some large-scale way). She also shows that social dilemmas are solved by norms; that invisible-hand explanations take two identifiable (and dramatically different) forms; that trust can emerge in seemingly unpromising situations; and that considerateness is the foundation on which our relationships are organized in both the thin context of the public space and the intimate context of the family.

Robert Broom was born on 30 November 1866 at 66 Back Sneddon Street, Paisley. He was the third child of John Broom and his wife, Agnes Hunter Shearer. The family of Broom is supposed to have originated from a John Broom who came to Scotland in Cromwell’s army in 1650 and settled near Linlithgow, the family remaining in East Stirlingshire until, in about 1820, Broom’s grandfathei settled in Glasgow, and married Ann Hunter of Highland ancestry. They .lad two sons, James, an engraver and lithographer who died young of consumption, and John, who was a designer for calico prints and Paisley shawls. When fashion changed and such work became impossible John went into commerce, eventually settling at Burnbridge near Linlithgow, half-way between Edinburgh and Glasgow. John Broom was a cultured man with a wide knowledge of English literature and of painting. Robert Broom was a sickly child, with adenoids and much bronchitis, and was, when six years old, sent to Millport (where the Marine Station now is) to live with his grandmother. There he met an army officer, John Leavach, aged eighty-three, who had fought in the Peninsular and American wars, but was a keen naturalist, who introduced Broom to marine life and to a microscope. Indeed, Broom used this original instrument for more than sixty years. At Burnbridge, Broom was reunited with his father, then an enthusiastic botanist, and constantly met as a family friend Peter Cameron, who became the great authority on Hymenoptera. To his influence Broom attributed his devotion to natural history. Broom had little schooling until at ten years old he entered Hutcheson’s Grammar School at Glasgow, and in 1883, at seventeen years of age, became a laboratory assistant to Professor J. Ferguson. In this position Broom became much interested in chemistry, and eventually ‘did most of the public analyses sent to the laboratory’.

Sigmund Freud spent the last year of his life at 20 Maresfield Gardens, an impressive redbrick Hampstead residence. The house was bought by his friends after the penniless psychoanalyst and his family fled from Vienna in 1938. His personal assets had been extorted from him by the authorities following the Anschluss of Austria to the Third Reich. When the family took up residence, Freud's daughter, Anna, organised his new study to resemble his Viennese consulting rooms. Before her own death in 1982, Anna arranged for the house to become a museum in honour of her father. Once again the study was refashioned to Freud's original specifications. This time capsule was opened to the public in July 1986.

<p><em>This research is an effort to explain quranic values in collaborating and synergizing with the values of local wisdoms which influences social life paradigm. The main resources of this research are the  thought of Bugis Muslim scholars in the Quranic exegesis which is in Bugis language. This exegesis was written by MUI of South Sulawesi consisting of 11 volumes. This study concerns on the interpretation of verses on women leadership which is then connected with the cultural values of Bugis society. Data on cultural values were collected through interview and observation. Bugis ulama tend to follow the perspective of Middle Eastern ulama regarding the issue of leadership in the domestic area, they argue that man is the leader. Meanwhile the cultural values ‘</em>sibaliperri, sipurepo’ indicate that husband and wife are partners in dealing with the family matters.  In the public space, Bugis ulama agree with the Bugis culture in which they say that women have opportunities to handle various tasks either at an organization or community</p><p><em>.</em><strong></strong></p><p><strong><em></em></strong><em><br /></em></p>

RESUMOEste artigo se propõe debater as condições para a transformação dos espaços públicos em espaços políticos e responder como isto ocorre. A tese defendida é a de que os espaços públicos são espaços do cotidiano social urbano e não possuem uma essência política, embora possam tornar-se espaços políticos quando invadidos por fenômenos da política que transformam temporariamente suas rotinas e seu público usual. O texto está dividido em três partes. Na primeira, a política é conceituada como um sistema institucional e operacional de resolução de conflitos de interesses, apresentando os riscos da falácia, muito comum na literatura sociológica, de considerar a política como uma esfera abstrata. Na segunda, o espaço político é apresentado como um conceito, que apesar da origem na ciência política, foi apropriado e ampliado na geografia política como espaço de ação das políticas públicas e das leis, mas também dos movimentos sociais e dos atos políticos. Na terceira, são elaborados os argumentos da tese central deste texto, respondendo à questão sobre as circunstâncias em que os espaços públicos podem se transformar em espaços políticos.Palavras-chave: Espaço político; espaço público; mobilizações políticas. ABSTRACTThis article proposes to discuss the conditions for the transformation of public spaces into political spaces and to respond how this occurs. The thesis defended is that public spaces are spaces of everyday urban social and do not have a political essence, although they may become political spaces when invaded by phenomena of politics that temporarily transform their routines and their usual public. The text is divided into three parts. In the first, politics is conceptualized as an institutional and operational system for resolving conflicts of interest, presenting the risks of the fallacy, very common in the sociological literature, of considering politics as an abstract sphere. In the second, the political space is presented as a concept, that despite the origin in political science, was appropriated and expanded in political geography as a space for action of public policies and laws, but also for social movements and political acts. In the third part, the arguments of the central thesis of this text are elaborated, answering the question about the circumstances in which the public spaces can turn into political spaces.Keywords: Political space; public space; political mobilizations.

How is May ’68 received in the public space? How has it been perceived in the collective consciousness in Greece since that day? To investigate the image of May ’68 portrayed by the mass media (public space) and the idea that young Greeks have of it today (collective memory), I relied on three categories of sources: i) Analysis of the texts referring to the events; ii) Interviewing former students who participated in the uprising against the Dictatorship at the Polytechnic in 1973; and iii) Discussions with today’s students to see whether or not they have an image of May ’68, and if so, what it is. This paper is made up of five sections. In the first I provide an overview of the situation in Greece in 1968, in the second I briefly set out the main positions on May ’68 of well-known French social scientists, and in the third I discuss how the period was perceived and the weight of its role in the uprising of Greek students at the Polytechnic in 1973. In the fourth section I paint a brief picture of how May ’68 has been viewed in Greece from the fall of the dictatorship in 1974 to today. Finally, in the fifth and final section, I summarise how today’s students perceive the events.
