This work includes a translation from Latin of the epistle of Pope Zosimus to Bishop of Salona Hesychius (418), as well as an introductory article and historical and philological commentaries. The text was written in response to the appeal of Hesychius to the Roman see. The Pope approves the position of Hesychius and describes step by step the cleric's cursus honorum. The epistle also contains information about the development of the church organization in Western Illyricum and of the idea of Roman primacy in the period of Late Antiquity.

Popular devotions are reflections and expressions of the people’s faith. They are expressions of how people recognize God in their lives, and as a shared experience, they foster expressions of devotion and thus become a manifestation of prayer. Popular devotions as forms of prayer and worship do not contradict the Sacred Liturgy but are acknowledged as legitimate by the Apostolic See. Moreover, popular devotions, in general, lead to the cultivation of some values. One of the most popular devotions among Filipino Catholics is the devotion to the Black Nazarene, a life-sized statue of Jesus Christ kneeling in one knee carrying the cross-dressed in a maroon robe. His face is marked with wounds and blood. His head is crowned with thorns with three gold-plated metal rays on the top of his head, with his eyes looking up to heaven. The Black Nazarene devotion balances Christology from below and above, i.e., Christ does not remain crucified. Instead, he brings the hope of resurrection to those who fervently approach him with faith, hope, and love. It suffices to say that the Black Nazarene serves as a means for the Filipino faithful to encounter Christ in their lives. Given this, this paper aims to appraise the Black Nazarene Devotion as a means that contributes to the New Evangelization among Filipino Catholics. More specifically, this paper seeks to answer how the devotion to the Black Nazarene aids Filipino Catholics in their desire to sustain and grow in their faith amidst the crises and problems they are facing.

This article examines the norms of canon law, which regulated the actions of the Catholic missionaries in Crimea since the emergence of first missions in the XIII century until the creation of eparchies in the early XIV century. Comprehension of the legal framework of Catholic missions is necessary for further research of social history of the region. The bulls Cum hora undecimal alongside Vos igitur and Gratias agimus, establish preferential legal regime on private matters that differs from the Western European canon law. Each question raised in the pontifical document is compared with the canonical norms of Western Europe and isolated cases on the territory of Crimea. Although papal bulls have always been used by the researchers of medieval Crimea, the legal content of these documents was usually outside the focus of attention. The author analyzes the content of the papal bulls through the prism of canon law of the Catholic Church, theological and legal discussions of the XIII – XIV centuries. Legal regime in the missionary territory was established in form of privileges and right to dispensation. The papal bull Cum hora undecima of 1245, repeatedly has been reissued repeatedly without significant amendments, is of particular importance for the researchers . In the questions of dispensation, consecration of churches and sacred objects, and granting of indulgences, the missionaries received the authority equal to the bishops and legates of the apostolic see. The converted to Catholicism local residents assumed a derogation in terms of closely related marriages, while clerics of the Eastern churches retained their rank and the right to stay married.

Summary. The purpose of this study is to analyze the information content of the circular, highlighting the main thematic parts. Research methodology is based on the use of analytical and synthetic critique of the sources. To establish the objectivity of information, in the absence of the original letter, its content is compared with other handwritten copies and old printed copies which we found. The scientific novelty is seen in the fact that for the first time Proto-hegumen Josaphat Ohotskyj’s circular received a wide public access. Conclusions. The mentioned circular reflects the multilevel system of management of Basilian monasteries: the Apostolic See, the provincial chapter and the council. After all, in the period under consideration, the Basilian Order already held papal law. The Pope reserved the right to approve the decrees of the general chapters, making changes and additions to them. The provincial chapters considered issues not only related to the election of the provincial council, but also resolutions on the regulation of the ascetic structure of the monks, their spiritual and intellectual formation and the financial and property status of the monasteries. These decrees were based on the particular law of the Basilian Order according to which the provincial chapter was endowed not only with elective but also with legislative functions that were limited by territorial boundaries. Given the dispersion of the Basilian monasteries due to the first division of the Commonwealth, there was a political difficulty in convening a general chapter, as secular autocrats forbade monks to move outside the empires. Secular rulers demanded that the Basilian monastics form autocratic governing bodies for monasteries located within individual states. In such socio-political conditions, the importance of the provincial chapter and the council is growing.

The paper dwells on Giovanni Gualberto’s relations with San Miniato al Monte and the Apostolic See, and questions some consolidated historiographical paradigms to highlight the elements of continuity the new ‘Vallombrosan’ foundations held with the Benedictine monastic tradition. The thesis is that the very hard opposition to Abbot Ubertus did not lead to a break with the Abbey of the Mons Forentinus. The reinterpretation of the Florentine reforming movement shows how Giovanni Gualberto’s rebellion was linked to practical and disciplinary rather than doctrinal aspects, and how the subversive thrust of his positions, both in terms of Eucharistic theology and the validity of the sacraments administered by unworthy priests, was emphasised by the deforming point of view of the controversies of the time, mainly in the vision of Peter Damiani.

By aiming at contextualizing this rite and the ethos of the CCR itself, we selected, as a cutout, the meetings held in September 2017, that give greater focus to the defense of a traditional model of the family, defended by the Apostolic See. The analysis of the themes and positions established during the meetings suggests that the Prayer Group – whichis also live transmitted by social networks – is not only a rite of Catholic praise and evangelization in the public space. It also reinforces the publicity of the deputies and other actors involved as the guidelines that pass in the National Congress, besides of being configured as a space for strategies and political alliances that even involve agents of other religious denominations, such as evangelicals. Keywords: Religion. The major aim of the present article is to assess the credibility and provide criticism of the source value of the first account on the state of the Chełm diocese from 1594 in reference to the organizational state of the diocese at the end of the 16th century, which was before the fire of the archives of the Episcopal curia in Krasnystaw (7 April, 1597), when most of the documents and books burnt down. The account analyzed in the present text is one of the oldest preserved reports sent by the Polish bishops to the Apostolic See after the Council of Trent. The criticism of the Chełm account from 1594 is preceded by an introduction referring to the research tradition and the editorial tradition related to this category of sources. The circumstances and the historical context concerning the account are presented. The evaluation of the reliability of the information passed to the Apostolic See by the representative of bishop Stanisław Gomoliński was conducted by means of the comparative analysis referring to the content of the account together with the information on the state and organization of the Chełm diocese which comes from other sources and scientific studies. The author of the account pointed to a number of difficulties in the functioning of his diocese in the area where the Orthodox Church prevailed and the network of Latin churches, additionally weakened by the Reformation, did not make up a regular and compact territorial structure. This caused a lot of problems in the material protection of the benefices and in pastoral services (a lack of clergymen, accumulation of benefices, disregarding the duty of residence). The account from 1594, as compared to later reports, has the character of a letter (“stylus epistolaris”), and not a form. It is short and fairly general. Its informative value, especially when we analyze particular problems or particular issues, is only supplementary. It can present greater value while studying the bishop’s relation to his diocese and the way of managing it. It is worth looking at this source in the comparative context – especially through the prism of the accounts presented by the same bishop from various dioceses which were under his management during his pastoral career. This will enable criticism of this source and the answer to the question about the extent to which the accounts were the personal work of a given bishop or the work of the Episcopal curia circles and to what extent the traditions of the bishopric.

The article establishes that the role of the Rus Archbishop Peter at the First Council of Lyon (1245) was not limited to conveying sensational information about the Tatars, as is usually believed. Peter was willing to resume negotiations between the Apostolic See and the rulers of the Byzantine (Nicene) Empire on the union of Churches, which continued with varying success throughout the thirteenth century. In the mid-1240s the Rus church hierarchs, who headed the Kiev (all Rus) Metropolitanate of the Byzantine Church, played an important, yet underestimated by researchers, role in establishing direct contacts between the Byzantine and Roman Churches and resuming negotiations for church unity.

The examination of Anglo-papal relations between 1305 and 1309 provides an interesting first case study of how political change both in England and at the papal curia impacted on the development of Anglo-papal diplomatic and administrative practices in the early fourteenth century. In order to assess the extent to which political changes influenced Anglo-papal administrative and diplomatic practices in the early fourteenth century this chapter is organized in four sections. After a brief historiographical overview on Anglo-papal relations in the early fourteenth century, the chapter focuses on the surviving diplomatic correspondence, looking at some diplomatic documents produced in the context of the diplomatic missions sent from England to the papal curia between 5 June 1305, when Clement V was elected, and 14 November 1305, when he was consecrated at Lyons, as well as examining the first Roman roll, which recorded the petitions sent from England to the Apostolic See in the last year of Edward I’s reign (April 1306–July 1307). Finally, I address the evidence concerning the first two years of Edward II’s reign in order to look for continuity and change in Anglo-papal administrative and diplomatic practices after the succession of the new English king.
