This chapter focuses on the relationship between consciousness and knowledge, and in particular on the role perceptual consciousness might play in justifying beliefs about the external world. A version of phenomenal dogmatism is outlined according to which perceptual experiences immediately, prima facie justify certain select parts of their content, and do so in virtue of their having a distinctive phenomenology with respect to those contents. Along the way various issues are considered in connection with this core theme, including the possibility of immediate justification, the dispute between representational and relational views of perception, the epistemic significance of cognitive penetration, the question of whether perceptual experiences are composed of more basic sensations and seemings, and questions about the existence and epistemic significance of high-level content. A concluding section briefly considers how some of the topics pursued here might generalize beyond perception.

The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between school, play and sport, from a sociocultural, critical and decolonial positioning. In order to do so, it exposes itself to the idea of epistemicide, understood as the way in which modern epistemology destroys its own cultural components and knowledge and imposes Eurocentric criteria in the way of understanding and practicing play and sport. The analysis is divided into three sections. The first shows how the western school has broken into Latin American educational processes. The second section focuses on how the conception of sport has disrupted the playful processes inherent in educational processes. In the third, the interaction between the apparent educational chaos and the playful aspects is considered. Key words: epistemicide; sport; game; Abya Yala; Eurocentrism.

This is the first of two articles examining the pervasiveness of religious, primitive and magical thinking in the culture of group analysis. I do so through the vehicle of the writings of Patrick de Maré. The article spells out what I believe to be the misunderstandings underlying de Maré’s rejection of causality, evidence and logical argument; calls into question the conventional view of de Maré’s writings as erudite but difficult; and examines the relationship between de Maré’s ideas and the way he takes up the role of large group conductor.

<p><b>The perceived dichotomy between the industrial and the ecological or amenity has led to a loss or misperception of identity and value of industrial landscapes. Conventional industrial precinct greening moves or the design of parks within these spaces fail to establish any sense of identity or contribute to the growth and development of these environments. Looking beyond the notion of a park as a respite from the urban condition, the challenge lies in developing parks that capitalise on what is perceived as negative and exploit it as amenity.</b></p> <p>In search of a strategy, the discourse on the relationship between landscape and infrastructure and the ensuing paradigm shift in the way we understand infrastructure, is examined. What has conventionally existed as a mono-programmatic object for the sake of managing a technical problem is being redefined into a multi-layered spatial field, performing over time as well as space. However care must be taken in how we go about redefining the notion of infrastructure; when we keep broadening its definition it begins to lose significance. If infrastructure is to be reinterpreted from a rigid object to a field that is able to engage with open and unpredictable systems, rather than defining what an infrastructural thing may be, it becomes more important to define how something might perform or develop ‘infrastructurally’. Much of the discourse surrounding landscape infrastructure focuses on the efficiency that is to be gained by the layering of multiple flexible systems or employing it as a means to remediate a site. While many contemporary landscape infrastructure projects seek to reintroduce the ecological histories that have been suppressed by urban development, their attempts to do so often erase much of what is too readily dismissed as negative, and with it meaningful social histories and qualities that may be exploited as opportunity.</p> <p>In focussing on the disturbed and residual spaces and the opportunities these territories offer, this thesis seeks to explore the potential of designing infrastructurally to not only reintegrate these forgotten spaces in the urban fabric of their industrial context but to coordinate their development and/or their deterioration in such a way that they become fundamental to the area’s identity and growth.</p> <p>Drawing on Stan Allen’s propositions for infrastructure and reinterpreting them through the lens of landscape as a catalytic infrastructure, an architectural strategy is proposed that capitalises upon the qualities found within the abandoned landscapes of the Seaview/Gracefield industrial precinct in Wellington, New Zealand, and recognises them as an opportunity to develop the concept of park in this context into something that reflects the important social histories of these sites while also presenting a proving ground for future operations. These spaces aim to question the way in which we assess infrastructural efficiency, their performance valued not just in quantitative output but also in qualitative terms.</p>

Abstract The relationship between physical stimulus and perception is fundamental to understand aesthetic appreciation. This study aimed to examine how the properties of sculptures influence their artistic appreciation. Thirteen participants touched altered sculptures from the series Bichos de Lygia Clark. Participants indicated their perceptions for each stimulus using Semantic Differential Scales (7-point Likert scale): Complexity, Irregularity, Amount of pieces, Interest and Pleasingness. The duration of manipulation was recorded. The results showed that sculptures perceived as having more pieces were the ones judged to have a high level of Complexity and Irregularity. Sculptures evaluated as demonstrating a high level of Complexity and Irregularity were considered more interesting, although less pleasant. Participants tended to spend more time exploring the more complex sculptures. The results indicate that the amount of informational content, represented by the amount of pieces present in the sculpture, can influence the way it is perceived and affect its hedonic value.

In this chapter, we discuss the way in which implicit exceptions operate in the context of international law, with special reference to peremptory norms of general international law (i.e. jus cogens). To do so, we develop a theoretical model of exceptions based upon the notion of normative conflict. This model allows us to explain the relationship between derogation and defeasibility of peremptory norms of general international law. The chapter is organized in three parts. We begin by explaining the difference between explicit and implicit exceptions in light of the way in which different types of norms may conflict (section 1). We then consider the existence of explicit and implicit exceptions in international law vis-à-vis the existence of peremptory norms of general international law, which are by definition non-derogable (section 2). Finally, we employ our theoretical model—illustrated in section 1—to analyse Article 53 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties 1969, arguing that, in relation to jus cogens, the idea of non-derogation should be understood as referring to implicit and not explicit exceptions (section 3).

Abstract In this article, I discuss Alain Badiou’s 2008 address titled “The Three Negations.” Though the text was originally presented in a symposium concerning the relationship of law to Badiou’s theory of the event, I discuss the way this brief address offers an introduction to the broad sweep of Badiou’s metaphysics, outlining his accounts of being, appearing, and transformation. To do so, Badiou calls on the resources of three paradigms of negation: from classical Aristotelian logic, from Brouwer’s intuitionist logic, and in paraconsistent logics developed by DaCosta. I explain Badiou’s use of negation in the three primary areas of his metaphysics, as well as to diagnose the degrees of transformation that may have occurred in a situation. My analysis of Badiou’s use of negation in this text is aided by examples from his broader ontological oeuvre. I also explain the underlying requirement in Badiou’s work that formal considerations - mathematical or logical - get their sense by being tethered to readily-identifiable political, aesthetic, scientific, or interpersonal concerns. I conclude by addressing the foundation Badiou’s work establishes for pursuing a new metaphysics, and by discussing certain of the liabilities that remain in the wake of his account.

Este trabalho objetiva discutir como se estabelece a relação entre as famílias, as crianças e a Política de Assistência Social, no âmbito do Programa Bolsa Família, no que diz respeito ao uso do recurso, isto é, quem gere, como gere e como destina. Para isso, buscamos identificar e analisar o lugar que as crianças ocupam na família e o modo como compreendem a utilidade do benefício, uma vez que são participantes ativos das condicionalidades do Programa. Nesse sentido, o recorte metodológico leva à sério o ponto de vista das crianças, sustentando-se nas “pesquisas sobre/com crianças”. Os resultados apontaram que os adultos se empenham para destinar o recurso como está orientado, contudo, nem sempre assim ocorre, pois as crianças vão impondo outras necessidades. Isso significa que as crianças influenciam no tocante ao gerenciamento, senão todo, parte do recurso recebido, constituindo-se, deste modo, agentes no mercado e na dinâmica da vida familiar. ABSTRACT This paper aims to discuss how the relationship between families, children and Social Assistance Policy is established, in the Bolsa Família program, regarding the use of the resource, that is, who manages it, how it is managed and what is its destination. To do so, we seek to identify and analyze the place children occupy in the family and the way they understand the utility of the benefit, since they are active participants of the conditions the Program imposes. In this sense, the methodological clipping takes their point of view seriously, and is based on “researchs on / with children". The results show out that adults are committed to allocate the resource as it is indicated, however, this is not always the case, as children impose other needs. This means that children have influence over management, if not all, part of the resource received, thus becoming an agent in the market and in the dynamics of family life. Keywords: Social Policy. Abstract In this essay, I discuss the relationship between photography, photographic technology, and memory in the final decades of the nineteenth century. I do so first in relation to the desire to possess actual material memories of the deceased, and then move to consider the way in which the photograph was often used as a metaphor for the processes of memory. I argue that apart from exceptional cases, this was, in fact, a false analogy. Taking Amy Levy’s 1888 novel The Romance of a Shop as a text through which to examine both death-bed photography and the workings of memory, I explore the idea of the memory flashing back, suddenly, and link this to the developments that took place in flash photography at the time that Levy was researching her photographically-themed novel. The metaphor of the flash – and the flash-back – has proved of more lasting value in the semantic linking of photography and memory, I argue, than other attempts to link the materiality of the photographic process to the workings of the brain.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between live bands and the music they play and aggression in barrooms catering to young, college-aged patrons. Twenty musicians representing 14 different cover bands playing in licensed drinking establishments throughout Northeast Pennsylvania were interviewed about their influence on the behaviors of bar patrons. Content analysis of completed interviews revealed several important findings. Most notably, each of the musicians interviewed in this study reported being able to control and manipulate patron behavior, not just through the music they play, but also through their stage presence, their physical appearance and attire, and the way they interact with patrons while on and away from the stage. While none of the musicians reported ever deliberately trying to push bar patrons towards aggression, most agreed that they had the power to do so if desired. Conversely, musicians identified themselves as potentially important agents of social control within bars. Implications for future research and policy are discussed.
