PurposeKatipuneros RPG: Bisperas ng Himagsikan (Katipuneros RPG: The Eve of the Revolution) is an immersive and gamified theater that engages its “audiences” in the initiation rites of a secret revolutionary movement in the Philippines in 1896. This descriptive qualitative research evaluates such experiential approach to learning history by investigating the experiences and insights of a group of students from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), who participated in Katipuneros RPG.Design/methodology/approachTextual data obtained from the participants' reflection papers and focus group discussion transcripts were analyzed using open and axial coding.FindingsThree key themes summarized the participants' learning experiences as they went through the play, as follows: (1) Katipuneros RPG as an immersive, interactive and intrinsically motivating medium for learning history; (2) the knowledge, values and skills that served as facilitating factors for their learning and (3) the insights the participants gained about history and life in general.Practical implicationsThe research argues that in Katipuneros RPG, learners take on a more active role in studying history as the “teacher” vanishes in lieu of a learning system the allows students to think critically, reflect and collaborate. The approach integrates elements of development theater, immersive play and gamified learning, as well as the principles of constructivist, play-based and multi-sensorial learning.Social implicationsAs an innovative learning tool, it is a viable medium to teach history in the current socio-political context of the Philippines.Originality/valueThe study hopes to contribute to literature on pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning history through immersive environments.

Teacher Deployment Program Activities in Schools (PDS) are very beneficial for the lecturers and the school as well as LPTK. The Teacher Deployment Program in Schools (PDS) has a symbiotic nature of mutualism, meaning that it benefits both parties, both the school and the Lecturer and LPTK. An innovative learning model that can encourage students' understanding of Japanese vocabulary mastery. One form of innovative learning models is the Word Square learning model. Word Square learning model can be used to encourage students 'understanding of the subject matter, can train students' discipline, can train their attitudes carefully and critically and can stimulate students to think effectively. Of the 20 students who were tested in the pre-test before applying the Word Squared learning model in studying Japanese vocabulary can be seen from the results of the average grade of 49.5. Whereas after using the Word Square learning model, the progress of learning outcomes is so well evidenced by the average grade of the post-test that reaches 90.15. This proves that the application of the Word Square learning model in learning Japanese vocabulary plays a big role in a teaching and learning system, especially for education.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to propose a real-time lecture supporting system. The target of this study is on-site classrooms where teachers give lectures and a lot of students listen to teachers’ explanations, conduct exercises, etc. Design/methodology/approach The proposed system uses an e-learning system and an e-book system to collect teaching and learning activities from a teacher and students in real time. The collected data are immediately analyzed to provide feedback to the teacher just before the lecture starts and during the lecture. For example, the teacher can check which pages were well previewed and which pages were not previewed by students using the preview achievement graph. During the lecture, real-time analytics graphs are shown on the teacher’s PC. The teacher can easily grasp students’ status and whether or not students are following the teacher’s explanation. Findings Through the case study, the authors first confirmed the effectiveness of each tool developed in this study. Then, the authors conducted a large-scale experiment using a real-time analytics graph and investigated whether the proposed system could improve the teaching and learning in on-site classrooms. The results indicated that teachers could adjust the speed of their lecture based on the real-time feedback system, which also resulted in encouraging students to put bookmarks and highlights on keywords and sentences. Originality/value Real-time learning analytics enables teachers and students to enhance their teaching and learning during lectures. Teachers should start considering this new strategy to improve their lectures immediately.

Conclusion: According to student and faculty feedback, case-based learning is an effective, active teaching-learning tool that improves students’ understanding of basic concepts, clinical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, communication skills, student-teacher relationship, and self-directed learning.

Significance This follows the first ASEAN Summit that Duterte headed as ASEAN’s chair for 2017, where his pro-China foreign policy was evident. Impacts Should the Trump administration take a less active role in ASEAN’s institutions, this will strengthen China’s hand. Maritime spats could be prominent when the Philippines chairs the ASEAN Regional Forum (August) and East Asia Summit (November). Philippine public scepticism over China could see protests as closer bilateral ties are pursued.

PurposeThis paper aims to present results of a study which examined students’ collaborative information behavior (CIB) in comparison with behavioral patterns illustrated in Wilson’s (1996) model of information behavior.Design/methodology/approachA total of six groups of undergraduate students; four from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and two from Ardhi University (ARU) were purposively selected. Data were collected using semi participant observation, critical incident interviews and focus group discussion methods.FindingsResults indicate that students’ CIB is mainly shaped by collaborative learning environment, learning tasks objectives and requirements. Despite its wider applicability in different domains and contexts, Wilson’s (1996) model is partially appropriate in modeling students’ group-based learning information behavioral activities. Person(s) in context and active and passive information seeking are aspects of the model which are observed to be relevant in students’ CIB.Practical implicationsThe study has implications on teaching and learning practices in higher learning institutions.Originality/valueThe study provides new insights on how students exhibit different information behavioral patterns during collaborative learning. The study fills a gap on how solitary models of information behavior can be used to model students’ information behavior in team-based learning.
