Purpose – This paper aims to present a correlation study on general and accelerated corrosion of the welded structure of aluminum alloy 2219 in N2O4. Design/methodology/approach – Corrosion experiments of the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)-welded aluminum alloy structure were conducted under both mild and accelerated corrosion conditions by changing the water content in N2O4. Findings – The experimental results indicated that both general and accelerated corrosion processes of the TIG-welded structure of aluminum alloy 2219 in N2O4 followed the linear equation ΔW = A + Bt, and the corrosion products were unchanged regardless of the water content in the N2O4 solution. Originality/value – The weight loss comparison method is used to identify the structure of the conventional aluminum welding and aluminum welding structure corrosion dinitrogen tetroxide in nitric acid accelerated corrosion relationship.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of the aging at 200°C on creep and hardening behavior of hardenable 6101 aluminum alloy manufactured by an industrial wiredrawing process used for construction of self-supporting overhead aerial power line conductors. Design/methodology/approach The creep tests were carried out under applied constant stress 100 MPa and constant temperature 150°C. Hardness measurements were also used to investigate the mechanical behavior of the aged alloy. Micrographs of the fractured wires by creep tests were performed by scanning electron microscope. Electrical resistivity of the aged alloy was measured at different time of the aging treatment. Findings The authors have found the relationship between the precipitation sequence, the mechanical properties and the electrical resistivity of aged 6101 aluminum alloy. Originality/value The optimum properties were also deduced.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect of graphite content on the properties of aluminum alloy/silicon carbide/granite (Al/SiC/Gr) composites. Design/methodology/approach – Hardness and wear tests were applied to the powder metallurgical composites, and microstructural characterization was conducted. Findings – Optimum graphite content for maximum wear resistance is reported as weight 6 per cent. Originality/value – Results of this study may help light weight Al/SiC/Gr composites to be used in different industrial applications.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of peening on the fatigue limit of steels for welded structure with a crack in the weld toe zone. Design/methodology/approach – An artificial semi-circular slit was created in the weld toe, and peening was conducted. Then, bending fatigue tests were carried out. Findings – First, owing to the shot peening, the maximum slit depths that can be rendered harmless were 1.0 and 1.2 mm in SUS316 and SM490, respectively. Second, during the fatigue test, the fracture of a peened specimen originated outside the slit, which indicated that peening eliminated the effect of the slit on the fatigue limit. Third, the fatigue limit of a slit specimen was improved by the enhanced residual stress distribution and the decreased stress concentration due to plastic deformation at the weld toe. Originality/value – There are very few studies about which a fatigue crack is rendered harmless by residual compressive stress, as a result the structures could be continued to use. Moreover, the study defining the concept about rendering crack harmless and systematic investigation was not able to be found.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the different preferences between property practitioners and residential consumers on housing prices in the Jakarta Metropolitan Region. Design/methodology/approach – The Jakarta Metropolitan Region as the largest metropolitan city in Indonesia was selected as the main sample city for this study. This study comprises 134 respondents from property practitioners and 277 respondents from residential consumers. Data were collected from all regions in Jakarta Metropolitan Region and their respective satellite cities. Descriptive analysis, the correlation study, Wilcoxon t-test and principal component analysis were used to compare the findings between each group’s preferences on housing attributes. Findings – The results of this research provide an analysis on the different decisive attributes for each group, disparities on the correlation between attributes in housing consumers and property practitioners and disagreements among each group on the attribute preferences influencing housing prices in the Jakarta Metropolitan Region. Research limitations/implications – In conclusion, the study provides valid and dependable evidence on different consumers and property practitioners attribute preferences for housing products in the Jakarta Metropolitan Region. Originality/value – This research is the first to compare the attribute preferences for housing products between housing consumers and property practitioners in Indonesia. In addition, this study is one of the first to reaffirm preference attributes influencing housing product prices in Indonesia.

Purpose – This study aims to address the factors or attributes that would influence the price of residential products in Jakarta Metropolitan Region. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 202 respondents from all across Jakarta Metropolitan Region participated in the questionnaire for this study. Demographic questions are categorized into age, gender and preferences for real estate locations. The questionnaire was made based on the author’s previous studies. Of the total respondents, 127 were males and 75 were females with age ranging from 18 to 56 years old. For data analysis, the authors utilized factor analysis, Cronbach’ α test and analysis of correlation to reach the conclusion of this study. Findings – The findings suggested that from the initial three factors groups, there are five new groups that emerge as influencing factors for housing prices. Cronbach’ α score were verified (α = 0.906). Correlation study result suggested that the initial three factors groups produce a significant correlation between each of them, except for the factor of “overall location” and “located near family.” After factor analysis, the research results show that there are two new additional groups of factors that emerge as influences to housing prices. There are significant scores of differences between gender and real estate location preference toward the groups of factors. Research limitations/implications – This study shows how physical qualities, concept and location factors influence the housing price perception of their consumers. The result shows to be relatively reliable and valid. Originality/value – The study is the first to analyze the relationship between the factors for preferences on residential products and housing price in Indonesia. This paper is also intended to be the first to pioneer the study on factors of preferences on residential products in Indonesia. The findings will be useful to develop pricing models for housing product in Indonesia.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore if there is an analogous discipline in China to diplomatics. Design/methodology/approach – A comparison method is used for the exploration. Five Chinese disciplines are chosen for the comparison, which are Wenxian xue, Bianwei xue, Dangan jianbian xue, Wenshu xue and Gu wenshu xue. The diplomatics, as discussed in this paper, is modern diplomatics, as exemplified in the work of Dr Luciana Duranti. Findings – It was found that while there is no such Chinese discipline identical to diplomatics, its knowledge is distributed among several Chinese disciplines. This indicates the common concern and efforts in the West and East and the potential for the further development of diplomatics as a global discipline. Research limitations/implications – The disciplines this paper has examined are what this author is aware of that share certain similarities with diplomatics and the discussion is based on this author’s understanding; thus, it is possible that there are disciplines that this author did not know or the understanding is insufficient to reveal all the connections between diplomatics and these disciplines. Further research from other perspectives might be needed. Originality/value – To the author’s best knowledge, this is the first paper in English comparing Chinese diplomatic disciplines with diplomatics. It has also shed some light on the development of several Chinese disciplines.

Purpose In summary, it can be found that the current research on the simulation of natural atmospheric dry–wet alternating accelerated corrosion mainly focused on the study of electrochemical corrosion process and the study of corrosion rate; the micro-pre-corrosion mechanism of materials in this environment, especially for materials. The specific effects of fatigue and fracture performance still lack detailed research. Accordingly, this study aims to more realistically simulate the effect of natural atmospheric corrosion environment on the corrosion resistance and fatigue performance of aircraft skin. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the uniaxial strain control method was used to test the fatigue performance of pre-corrosion samples under simulated natural atmospheric corrosion using MTS809 tensile-torque composite fatigue machine. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy spectrum analysis, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were used. Fatigue fracture, corrosion morphology and corrosion products were analyzed. Findings The results show that the deep corrosion pit caused by pre-corrosion environment leads to multi-source initiation of crack; the fatigue life of pre-corroded sample decreases by about one-half, chloride ion invades the material and promotes intergranular corrosion; life prediction results show that the natural atmospheric corrosive environment mainly affects the plastic term in the Manson–Coffin formula resulting in a decrease in fatigue life. Originality/value Innovative experimental schemes and materials are used and the test temperature and relative humidity are strictly controlled. The corrosion failure mechanism of 2A70-T6 aluminum alloy under alternating wet and dry accelerated corrosion environment and its influence on fatigue behavior were obtained.

Purpose This paper aims to compare the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of E20 biodiesel with diesel-water emulsion and eucalyptus water emulsion. Design/methodology/approach This research expounds the trans-esterification process apparently. Various biodiesel blends were made to go through the trans-esterification process to make it suitable for feeding them into the low heat rejection (LHR) engine. E20 biodiesel – 20% of eucalyptus oil by volume with diesel was chosen to carry out the research as it was found to be the best blend with diesel. The volume of water content in diesel water emulsions was varied by 5, 10 and 15% in DWM1 (Diesel Water Mixture1), DWM2 (Diesel Water Mixture2) and DWM3 (Diesel Water Mixture3), respectively. Similarly, the volume of water content in eucalyptus water emulsions was varied with emulsification ratio of E20 biodiesel. Partially stabilized zirconia was coated over top surface of the piston and valve facing of the LHR engine. Findings From the researches carried out, DWM3 (Diesel Water Mixture3) was found to be superior when compared with other diesel-water emulsions in LHR engine. The overall efficiency was found to be higher for EWM3 than other biofuels tested the in LHR engine. Originality/value This investigational experiment can be further extended to multi-cylinder engine and to improve the cetane number, Di ethyl ester (DEE) fuel additives can be added.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of water content of assembly solution on the adsorption behavior and corrosion protection performance of 1–tetradecylphosphonic acid [TDPA, CH3(CH2)13P(O)(OH)2] films on aluminum alloy surface in NaCl solution. Design/methodology/approach Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of TDPA were prepared on the 2024 aluminum alloy surface in TDPA containing ethanol-water solutions with different water contents. The adsorption behavior of the SAMs on the alloy surface and their corrosion protection properties in a 3.5 per cent NaCl solution were characterized by potentiodynamic polarization scan, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Findings The FTIR results demonstrated that the TDPA molecules were successfully adsorbed on the 2024 aluminum alloy surface, and the density of the SAMs increased with the increasing water content in the assembly solution. The electrochemical studies and corrosion morphologies observed by AFM showed that the optimal condition is 2 h of assembling in solution B or solution C. The corrosion inhibition efficiency values follow the order solution B ≈ solution C > solution A at the first 2 h assembly and solution B > solution C > solution A while the assembly time exceeded 2 h. The dependence of corrosion inhibition performance of the SAM on the water content and on the assembly time is related to the balancing of competition between TDPA adsorption and dissolution of the alloy oxidation film. Originality/value It illustrates potential application prospects of TDPA for surface treatment of aluminum alloy. Via the comparison with our previous work, this paper provides useful information regarding the difference of corrosion inhibition properties of organic phosphonic acid for aluminum alloy between in neutral and in acid solution.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the recent National Appropriate Adult Network (NAAN) report on the role of the appropriate adult. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the NAAN report and a review of relevant policy and research literature. Findings There to Help 2 highlights that there are still significant gaps in the provision of appropriate adult schemes across England and Wales. These gaps potentially place vulnerable adults at increased risk. Originality/value This paper is a review of recent research.
