Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop identification system for fiber optic connectors in passive distribution cabinets. The system should have alternative power supply and wireless communication unlike the identification systems commercially available, which will make the system fully autonomous. Design/methodology/approach Detailed project and realization of real demonstrator of fully autonomous identification system. After the realization of the demonstrator, its optimization was performed. Findings It is possible to build fully autonomous identification system which requires 15.6 mJ energy to perform one cycle of identification process. Moreover, it is possible to use the alternative power method to supply this system. Originality/value Fully autonomous identification system of fiber optic connectors with alternative power supply and wireless communication.

The ZigBee which was adopted low-power wireless communication technology was used to design a multi-parameters monitoring system according to agricultural monitoring characteristics. Following the design concepts of generalization and modularization, the sensors and functional modules could be combined configuration, thus the system was versatility, flexible and convenient. Low-power communication protocol and solar charging technology were adopted to extend the life of power supply. This system could be widely used for automatic monitoring in facility agriculture and other agricultural places.

The article discusses the issue of ensuring the reliability, durability, and safety of buildings and engineering, including hydraulic structures, by creating an automated hydrostatic leveling system with a device that uses fiber optics combined with an LED and a photodetector, installed on one hollow axis of rotation of the drum, like a sensor a ferromagnetic transducer was used for the displacement pulse, a comparative analysis of the existing means for measuring settlements and deformations of objects using laser and photoelectric means was carried out. A patented device has been developed that provides high accuracy, reliability, and the ability to create a monitoring system with remote information delivery with an autonomous energy source. The device can be used to install and assembly conveyor lines in determining the vertical deformations of dams, buildings, and structures during operation.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to empirically evaluate business process orientation (BPO) of the Slovenian power supply business.Design/methodology/approachWithin the empirical investigation, the level of BPO maturity was measured in the 19 organizations of the power supply business. The survey was focused on the top, middle and lower managers. As a measuring instrument, a questionnaire for the extended concept of process orientation with nine elements was used.FindingsThe results of the BPO measurement show that, despite this long-standing preoccupation with processes, certified management system and the computerization of operations, process maturity is not high. Particularly the lowest score for information technology represents a surprise.Practical implicationsThis research makes significant contributions to the literature and above all to scholars and practitioners who work professionally in this field and will find useful guidance for a better understanding of applying BPO and maturity models.Social implicationsOne important reason for performing the maturity measurement in the power supply business is the importance of its activities for the operation and development and environmental impact of the whole of Slovenian society.Originality/valuePresented research is the first one which considers the BPO maturity in the Slovenian power supply business and therefore contributes to understanding of the “intangible factors” which have impact on the introduction of business process management and BPO.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the stability of high voltage DC power supply and reduce the ripple. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted using the simulation analysis model and numerical calculation. Findings By increasing the output arm capacitance, the expression of ripple and times of the output arm capacitance and the auxiliary arm capacitance is derived. The output ripple is determined by the value of the output arm capacitance. Finally, the correctness of the method and the formula are verified using circuit simulation. Originality value This paper presents a method to improve the power supply stability.

Purpose Litz wire manufacturing using mechanical procedures presents several limitations regarding reliability and repeatability, especially when a small strand diameter is used. This paper aims to propose a power supply design for Litz wire manufacturing using a high-frequency high-performance resonant converter. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes the design of a resonant power supply for induction heating specially designed to tackle with the challenge of heating Litz wires quickly. Findings The proposed converter enables the removal of the isolating coating from the Litz wire through induction heating, improving significantly the manufacturing process. Originality/value The proposed converter improves significantly the manufacturing process of Litz wire through induction heating, with economic and reliability benefits.

Purpose – The study aimed to look at the library software in use in Nigerian university libraries, and the challenges and frustrations experienced in their automation projects. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a descriptive survey method and covers university libraries in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 32 university libraries in Nigeria. Findings – The study revealed that university libraries in Nigeria widely use library software such as KOHA, SLAM and VIRTUA for their library operations. Challenges such as lack of skilled manpower, lack of fund, absence of modern systems (computers) and erratic power supply were identified as the major problems university libraries in Nigeria encountered while using library software. Librarians recommended the use of KOHA, SLAM or VIRTUA library software for use by university libraries that are in search for library software to use. Originality/value – The findings of this study will provide useful information to librarians and library administrators in Nigeria and other developing countries who want to automate their library operations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the recent National Appropriate Adult Network (NAAN) report on the role of the appropriate adult. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the NAAN report and a review of relevant policy and research literature. Findings There to Help 2 highlights that there are still significant gaps in the provision of appropriate adult schemes across England and Wales. These gaps potentially place vulnerable adults at increased risk. Originality/value This paper is a review of recent research.
