New approximate solutions of the Blasius equation

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a reliable treatment for studying the Blasius equation, which arises in certain boundary layer problems in the fluid dynamics. The authors propose an algorithm of two steps that will introduce an exact solution to the equation, followed by a correction to that solution. An approximate analytic solution, which contains an auxiliary parameter, is obtained. A highly accurate approximate solution of Blasius equation is also provided by adding a third initial condition y ' ' (0) which demonstrates to be quite accurate by comparison with Howarth solutions. Design/methodology/approach – The approach consists of two steps. The first one is an assumption for an exact solution that satisfies the Blasius equation, but does not satisfy the given conditions. The second step depends mainly on using this assumption combined with the given conditions to derive an accurate approximation that improves the accuracy level. Findings – The obtained approximation shows an enhancement over some of the existing techniques. Comparing the calculated approximations confirm the enhancement that the derived approximation presents. Originality/value – In this work, a new approximate analytical solution of the Blasius problem is obtained, which demonstrates to be quite accurate by comparison with Howarth solutions.

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to examine how much difference in income can be explained by familial culture that persists in different societies.Design/methodology/approachWe employ a two-step methodology to evaluate the impact of familial culture on income across countries. In the first step, we construct the macro measures of familial culture from micro survey data. In the second step, the growth model is estimated.FindingsFirst-step micro regression results show that family is more important to female, richer, highly educated, unemployed and married individuals. Male, poorer, less educated and unemployed individuals are more likely to respect and love parents unconditionally. The same group is also more likely to think that parents must do the best for their kids. Finally, the macro results show that the strength of national familial ties explains significant differences in income across countries.Research limitations/implicationsWe show that countries with weak family ties are richer than those with strong family ties. These results are useful for policymakers who design public policies that accommodate the type of familial culture that persists in their society.Originality/valueWe construct the macro measures of familial culture from the micro survey data. The paper adds to the literature on the effect of culture on income at the macro level.

Purpose – This paper aims to present an alternative to current banking systems. The purpose of the paper is the optimisation of the concept of cash waqf and its management in the framework of a waqf bank and its viability. Design/methodology/approach – The study is doctrinal and empirical. Several assumptions concerning the structure and operation of the bank are made, surveyed and descriptively analysed. Findings – The concept of cash waqf could be used for the operation of a waqf bank. There was a tendency among the given group of practitioners towards a corporate international social bank, capitalised by the waqf and non-waqf assets, sought after from the public and private sectors, as well as the Muslims and non-Muslims. Research limitations/implications – Assumptions are basic. Empirical findings are based on the perspective of waqf trustees. Other stakeholders’ perspectives need further research. Practical implications – The study is expected to persuade for, and assist in the establishment of a waqf bank. Social implications – This paper could contribute to the effectiveness of waqf institutions in their delivery of public good to the poor and society. These implications are not restricted to a specific country. Charities and the poor of any society may benefit from this study if the idea of total social banking is upheld. Originality/value – This study is the first to address the structure and operation of a waqf bank empirically.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of corruption on stock returns in the USA. In particular, this study examines the relationship between corruption in a state (i.e. local corruption) and stock returns of firms headquartered in that state (i.e. local returns). Design/methodology/approach This paper uses the Fama–MacBeth two-step regressions. In the first step, the authors estimate the coefficients on the market, size, value and momentum factors for individual stocks. In the second step, they use those coefficients along with the corruption score of the state where stocks are headquartered to explain stock returns. Findings This paper finds that corruption in a state adversely affects stock returns of firms headquartered in that state. It further documents that the effect of corruption on stock returns is limited to geographically concentrated firms. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to document the effect of state-level corruption on individual stock returns in the USA using the Fama–MacBeth regressions. This study contributes to the literature by documenting the effect of local corruption on local stock returns in a low corruption country.

PurposeThe purpose is to identify the main characteristics of dry ports (DPs) in Brazil, discussing the role of this logistic player, challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, this study provides a structured framework to drive DP decision-makers, identifying and assessing a network of means–end objectives, which could be replicable to other contexts.Design/methodology/approachThis article approached initially a literature review and exploratory research to discuss the main characteristics of DPs in Brazil. The second step was to conduct a qualitative analysis following the value-focused thinking (VFT) approach in two case studies in Pernambuco state to assess the achievement of the main objectives.FindingsThis article identified that the main characteristics of DPs in Brazil are offering additional services with a cheaper storage cost, handling mainly import cargo and being connected to seaports through highways. Moreover, this study resulted in a framework to assess the objectives of DPs, which could be replicable in other contexts, improving the current operations of DPs.Practical implicationsThe framework to assess DPs' objectives bridged the gap between the literature and the practice working as a tool to drive decision-makers to improve the current performance of DPs in Brazil. Additionally, the main issues, challenges and opportunities discussed provide managers, policymakers and DPs operators with valuable insights into this theme.Originality/valueThis paper is the first study to present a framework to assess the objectives of DPs as a valuable tool to drive decision-makers to improve DPs operations. From this study, lessons could be learned and the process described could be replicable in other countries.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a modified firefly algorithm (FA) considering the population diversity to avoid local optimum and improve the algorithm’s precision. Design/methodology/approach – When the population diversity is below the given threshold value, the fireflies’ positions update according to the modified equation which can dynamically adjust the fireflies’ exploring and exploiting ability. Findings – A novel metaheuristic algorithm called FA has emerged. It is inspired by the flashing behavior of fireflies. In basic FA, randomly generated solutions will be considered as fireflies, and brightness is associated with the objective function to be optimized. However, during the optimization process, the fireflies become more and more similar and gather into the neighborhood of the best firefly in the population, which may make the algorithm prematurely converged around the local solution. Research limitations/implications – Due to different dimensions and different ranges, the population diversity is different undoubtedly. And how to determine the diversity threshold value is still required to be further researched. Originality/value – This paper presents a modified FA which uses a diversity threshold value to guide the algorithm to alternate between exploring and exploiting behavior. Experiments on 17 benchmark functions show that the proposed algorithm can improve the performance of the basic FA.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the optimal double sampling attribute plan using the weighted Poisson distribution. Design/methodology/approach – For the given AQL and LQL, sum of producer’s and consumer’s risks have been attained. Based on the weighted Poisson distribution, the sum of these risks has been optimized. Findings – In the final inspection, the producer and the consumer represent the same party. So, the sum these two risks should be minimized. In this paper, the sum of risks has been tabulated using the weighted Poisson distribution for different operating ratios. These tabulated values are comparatively less than the sum of risks derived using Poisson distribution. Originality/value – The sampling plan presented in this paper is particularly useful for testing the quality of finished products in shop floor situations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to curate and promote students’ and lecturers’ works and creations, and to provide pleasing user experience for mobile device users when browsing the portfolio gallery information. Design/methodology/approach The design of the mobile web application using Rational Unified Process (RUP) methodology includes Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams. The evaluation is done in three steps: first step by comparing similar software, the second step by evaluate the interface using the eight golden rules and the last one by taking user questionnaire. Findings Evaluation of the application of Bina Nusantara University (BINUS) Store Mobile Web. Originality/value The authors report the development of BINUS Store Mobile web application by using Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) with Laravel framework and evaluate it in Android and iOS environments.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the risks to which agrifood supply chains are exposed and to analyze how these risks impact the degree of coordination of the chain. Design/methodology/approach The present investigation was executed in two steps. Initially, a literature review and interviews with slaughterhouse managers were carried out to identify the main risks to which agrifood supply chains are exposed. The second step consisted of a survey involving 66 Brazilian slaughterhouses to identify how the perception of risks influences the degree of coordination in the examined chains. Findings The study revealed that risks, transaction costs and creation of collaborative advantages are determining factors in defining the degree of coordination in the analyzed agrifood supply chains. Practical implications The results allow slaughterhouse managers to more easily recognize the risks to which the supply chains are exposed and evaluate in more detail strategies for relationships with their suppliers. These strategies may be able to avoid conflict and create value for the supplier by stimulating longer relationships and facilitating animal purchase transactions for slaughter. This can lead to quality improvements, lower costs and reduced risk. Originality/value Studies of risks in agrifood supply chains are rare in comparison with those developed in other sectors. The present investigation is innovative in identifying the main risks specific to agrifood supply chains and associating those risks with a degree of coordination that minimizes them.

PurposeIn this article, the authors consider the following nonlinear singular boundary value problem (SBVP) known as Lane–Emden equations, −u″(t)-(α/t) u′(t) = g(t, u), 0 < t < 1 where α ≥ 1 subject to two-point and three-point boundary conditions. The authors propose to develop a novel method to solve the class of Lane–Emden equations.Design/methodology/approachThe authors improve the modified variation iteration method (VIM) proposed in [JAAC, 9(4) 1242–1260 (2019)], which greatly accelerates the convergence and reduces the computational task.FindingsThe findings revealed that either exact or highly accurate approximate solutions of Lane–Emden equations can be computed with the proposed method.Originality/valueNovel modification is made in the VIM that provides either exact or highly accurate approximate solutions of Lane-Emden equations, which does not exist in the literature.

An approximate simplified analytic solution is proposed for the one DOF (degree of freedom) static and dynamic displacements alongside the stiffness (dynamic and static) and damping coefficients (minimum and maximum/critical values) of a parallel spring-damper suspension system connected to a solid mass-body gaining its energy by falling from height h. The analytic solution for the prescribed system is based on energy conservation equilibrium, considering the impact by a special G parameter. The formulation is based on the works performed by Timoshenko (1928), Mindlin (1945), and the U. S. army-engineering handbook (1975, 1982). A comparison between the prescribed studies formulations and current development has led to qualitative agreement. Moreover, quantitative agreement was found between the current prescribed suspension properties approximate value - results and the traditionally time dependent (transient, frequency) parameter properties. Also, coupling models that concerns the linkage between different work and energy terms, e.g., the damping energy, friction work, spring potential energy and gravitational energy model was performed. Moreover, approximate analytic solution was proposed for both cases (friction and coupling case), whereas the uncoupling and the coupling cases were found to agree qualitatively with the literature studies. Both coupling and uncoupling solutions were found to complete each other, explaining different literature attitudes and assumptions. In addition, some design points were clarified about the wire mounting isolators stiffness properties dependent on their physical behavior (compression, shear tension), based on Cavoflex catalog. Finally, the current study aims to continue and contribute the suspension, package cushioning and containers studies by using an initial simple pre – design analytic evaluation of falling mass- body (like cushion, containers, etc.).
